Birmingham Winger Linked With Blues and Bees
Saturday, 20th Jun 2015 14:49

Town and Brentford are weighing up moving for out-of-contract Birmingham City midfielder Koby Arthur, according to reports in his native Ghana.

The 19-year-old has been offered new terms by his current club, who he joined from non-league Woodford United in 2012, but is expected to move on this summer having found first-team opportunities limited at St Andrew’s.

Having moved to England with his family as a child, Arthur primarily plays wide on the right but can operate all across the midfield and up front.

Standing 5ft 6in tall, Arthur has made only eight starts and six sub appearances for Birmingham and has also spent time out on loan with Lincoln, where he made two starts and four sub appearances, and Cheltenham, for whom he scored four goals in two starts and six games from the bench.

While Arthur may well be on boss Mick McCarthy’s list of potential summer targets, Town are closing in on the season-long loan signing of Arsenal youngster Ainsley Maitland-Niles and if that deal goes through, as it is expected to, the Blues would appear unlikely to add another similar player to their squad.

If we are going in for midfielders we should of tried to sign jamie ward from derby, but we dont look like signing a top player anytime soon

Surprised we were not interested in McClean from Wigan pacey winger with goals in him and he is Irish so would fit

You certainly are batty! Plenty of players couldn't get a start at other clubs but have done well here. Chaplow for example, a very decent player, couldn't get a game at relegated Millwall.

Also, in what way is the expected year long signing of Arsenal youngster Ainsley Maitland-Niles showing "no ambition"?

I know this is probably only rumours but i really dont see what we going to achieve by signing unproven youngsters. I know people will throw the "mings" example at me but this very rarely happens in football. I think we need to spend some money and go for some top notch championship performers. The club and its hierarchy needs to understand the club is on the crest of a wave here. Not only has the home crowd average gone up for the first time in 10 odd years but we have also managed to keep the nucleus of a very good group of players for around 2 season now. So lets go out and get 4/5 top quality players and show the supporters we really are going to go for it next season.

I think we need some players with a bit more experience and are well established Players now to move forward. MM has done well taking rejects and making them great players but i think maybe we need names that will scare other teams around us

Doolly you want to engage your brain i didn't say he was still available i was aware he was off to west Brom read the post correctly we missed the chance again and Niles is a loan and unproven.

How is he going to win any flick-ons from our long-balls if he is only 5' 6? We have too many short players (Tabb) for hoofball as it is.

Dolly2.0 added 15:51 - Jun 20
I never said you weren't aware. The bit you need to engage your brain with is how you expected he might've come here when the price was £1.5m and the alternative destination was in the Premier League!

So how exactly have we "missed the chance"?!

battyblue added 16:13 - Jun 20
okay Dolly i forgot we have got to look at the bottom of the list for freebies etc that's the ambition of this club now lets move on.

He could room with Tabb , at 5 foot 6 he and Tabb could play hide and seek in their cots.

Battyblue - Berra, McGoldrick, Murphy, Parr, Tabb, Varney , Noel Hunt, Chaplow, Anderson... All made significant contributions last season and in recent seasons & you may recall each and every one was out of favour at their previous clubs. Adopting that rule, you're glad to see the back of the latter 4 and you'd like to see the first 4 out of the door so we can start showing more ambition???

Mick will clearly never get the credit he deserves off a minority of fans, but don't judge a player before they've played.

I don't know enough about him to comment. It would however seem our strategy is frees and loans again. It worked to an extent last season, but ultimately we fell just short. Feel we need to spend to bring in that all important goal scoring midfielder. Unlikely to happen though.

FAO Batty

Mings, Cresswell, Murphy, McGoldrick and Berra. I'll not bother mentioning the so-called tub thumping Captain....

Yeah, utter tosh that lot - two of which were utterly untried at this level and have failed completely. Cresswell is bumming it in some west end London team of has beens and can't get a game. Mings has been awful - lolloping around the pitch like some 'prima-madonna charlie' - who does he think he is? And his reputation with the fans is awful.

I never rated Murphy - just another Oirish player in it for the money - never felt as if he's been part of the Club and his family is still in Ireland or America or somewhere not nearby anyway.

As for McGrabbit and Handball Berra - terrible players to be picked up on free's - DIDIZ is just a show pony as we all know - all tricks, flicks and trips - zero end product. Berra - well, contributes nothing at all to the team just a liability in every, single and utter way. His fault we got relegated.

I agree with you - these are absolutely not the players we are searching for.

What we need is to make some substantial investments, as we have done so shrewdly over the years, I'm thinking back to Keane, Jewell and even Magic who spent Evans money so well.

Priskin stands out - Aresenal goal, say no more. Lee Martin - underrated and worth every single penny, Man Utd was his schooling and it showed, oozed class and end product. Paul Taylor - European pedigree and not given a chance - what a shame - prem quality there for sure. Just a few that come to mind - we miss all of these don't we.

Let's get out there are spend spend spend. We've got a rich history of making the right signings - come on Mick and Terry get your hands in the pockets of Evans and lift some money so we get some 'quality' in.

If MM can secure the services of Maitland-Niles then we have a player with serious potential who will shine in the Championship. Yes he's 17 but real pace power and quality. We would need to keep it on the ground a little more maybe

Lathers added 19:37 - Jun 20
MM should sign Brentford's wide men and that would do.

There are some really daft posters on here.
Signing a Arsenal youngster is certainly the sign of ambition. Especially, when you've discussed the player with Arsenal fans who have seen the guy play and speak highly of him.

Just what we need. NOT. But this is all we are going to get.

jas0999 added 21:28 - Jun 20
Homer 123 - yes there are plenty of frees out there. No one denies that. There are also some poor ones. Bajner for example. The point is, to be able to push on and improve, frees and loans need to be topped up with one or two modest fee transfers. An attack minded goal scoring midfielder is likely to cost money. My opinion is we should be investing in that type of player. Along with frees and loans. Players like Alan Dunne wouldn't really add to our squad in terms of improvement. Not saying we will sign him, but as an example.

blue_movies added 21:41 - Jun 20
if we can't afford to sign someone we have certainly lost all ambition. we haven't spent any money from transfer fees on signings and we play the worst football in the championship. either MM comes to his senses and sees that you have to play football to get out of this division and we sign some talent or ME accepts we are rubbish and starts charging ticket prices on a level with Barnsley.
MM will repeat his mistakes forever he ill always be mediocre mid table.
