Brentford: Douglas Deal Done
Tuesday, 4th Aug 2015 11:25

Brentford CEO Mark Devlin has revealed that midfielder Jonathan Douglas has left Griffin Park to join the Blues.

Devlin, speaking to Sky Sports News on the Brentford leg of their 92Live trip around all the English league clubs, confirmed that the deal is done.

Yesterday, Douglas was reported to have agreed a one-year contract with an option for a second season at Town, having undergone a medical in the afternoon.

The 33-year-old was due at Portman Road to put pen to paper this morning with the Blues set to formally announce his signing on what's understood to be a free transfer later today.

Monaghan-born Douglas, whose partner is Sky Sports News presenter Natalie Sawyer, moved to England in 2000 when he joined Blackburn Rovers. While at Ewood Park he spent time on loan at Chesterfield, Blackpool and Gillingham before moving on to Leeds in 2005.

After four years at Elland Road, the 6ft tall holding midfielder moved to Swindon before he joined Brentford in 2011.

Douglas, who has been capped eight times by the Republic of Ireland, signed a new contract with the Bees in February but is not in new manager Marinus Dijkhuizen's plans and last month he was told he could move on.

"He is not part of the squad and is training separately [with the U21s]. There is no future for him," Dijkhuizen told BBC London.

"We decided it is better for him to move on - for his future and for the future of Brentford."

Last season Douglas made 46 starts and scored eight goals as the Bees finished fifth in the Championship, one place above Town. Coincidentally, the teams meet at Griffin Park on Saturday.

Last week, the Blues missed out on signing another Brentford player, Northern Irish winger Stuart Dallas, who is set to join Leeds United in a £1.25 million deal.

By far the best player on the pitch at PR this season when we played them.

I think Brentford will struggle this season, nothing to back it up just a hunch. Welcome aboard :)

Great signing, scored more than our whole midfield last season. Free transfer for a hard working midfield that looks up when making a pass, not the hoof. Welcome on board from all town fans!!

Great signing.

In my opinion, we're now 1 experienced RM away from having a complete squad, one definitely capable of challenging,

I still don't think we need a RB. Chambers is first choice, with Parr and Emmanuel as cover. Seems fine to me.

Oops sorry StuartBrett was meant to up your comment, silly phone! I can also see Brentford struggling given the other players they're letting go, hoping that doesn't backfire for Saturday. Great signing this, now for that RB! COYB

Hopefully he can knock in a few vital goals from the middle this season..decent signing.

The team is looking good..now for a proper right back & I think we're done.

He was training this morning at Playford Road, plus Andre Dozzell was with the first team, which is great to see him involved.

@Devereuxxx: I like your positivity, but do you really think another season with Chambo as our first choice RB is good enough for a promotion chasing side? I have huge time for him as a player & captain and would love to see him partner Berra at centre half, but he has a weakness at RB that has been exploited by the better left wingers we have faced.
I would be happier to see Parr played at right back to be honest and fully expect Mick to bring in another RB (probably McGhee) before the transfer window shuts. Emmanuel is one for the future, but not yet ready to be a regular first teamer at this level.

A good player, so a very good signing. Shame we didn't land Dallas though, that would have been an exceptional signing!

all we need is a right back and a big right sided centre back then who knows?

Regarding the RB position, I do think it needs to be improved although Chambo has done an admirable job, but it might not be sorted before Saturday and possibly doesn't need to be. I think MM and the club are right to hold out on parting with big money on signings - seems other clubs think we're rich after the Mings money and squeezing us for higher figures. MM won't pay a penny over the players value, and less if he can get away with it.
We've a great manager.

Don't know much about him apart from what I saw at Portman Road last season but going by the majority of posts about him he sounds like a match winner. Would like to see Williams back though.

Phil, question: when you write "with an option for a second year," does that always mean an option for the club to keep him for a second year (i.e., as opposed to an option for the player to have a second year)? Thanks.
