New Defender McCarthy's Priority
Thursday, 6th Aug 2015 14:41

Town boss Mick McCarthy has confirmed that he’d still like to add to his squad with a versatile defender his priority. The Blues are understood to have made two unsuccessful bids for 19-year-old Hearts right-back or centre-half Jordan McGhee.

“I would like to strengthen further,” McCarthy said. “We’re a bit thin on the ground with defenders, to be honest with you.

"So if I could get a versatile defender from somewhere who could play left-back and centre-half or right-back and centre-half, who can cover a couple of positions, that’s something I’d be looking for."

The Blues, who have added Giles Coke, Jonathan Douglas and Larsen Touré to their squad this week, are reported to have made bids of up to £250,000 for Scotland U21 international skipper McGhee with a third offer expected. Hearts are said to be looking for a fee of around £500,000.

But McCarthy wouldn’t be drawn on his interest in the defender: “He’s somebody else’s player and I won’t talk about that.”

Slowtractorboy..........time our team gets out of this division if ever and makes some decent money that dept will more than likely doubled at some time we need to show real ambition to reach the promised land or we will be here for ever,
How many other teams in the championship are starting the campaign with no proven recognized right back that's bad management rb position should have been the first priority when last season finished.
We need every point we can get to have a chance of promotion not dilly dallying for a month to get a balanced team.

It does seem strange this right back issue ,I'm wondering now we have more midfield players whether skuse will play at right back a number of times this season. He played there a lot for bristol city in the season they were relegated. Oh dear. Come on MM balance of the team is critical.

Bit surprised MM didn't try and sign Greg Halford. Can play centre back, centre half and was on a free and used to play for Col U so no problem moving to area.

If Mick likes the lad at Hearts and he'd cost £500k then what's the hold up?

Greg Halford has had so many clubs due to the fact he seems allegedly to upset dressing rooms interns of team moral. Thats not MMs bag..

1. Prefer to see a clear improvement signed - instant first teamer, and then one of the existing group (Chambo?) becomes the cover. Improves the team immediately rather than just increases numbers.
2. Getting a reputation as a club which pays an asking fee - any asking fee - isn't smart business. In the long run, better to miss out on a couple of players and pick up others for value than be repeatedly ripped off (I give you Liverpool/Man City etc etc).

Get Danny Batth from Wolves - young, strong, wicked in the air and a natural leader too!
