Connolly in Irish U21 Squad
Thursday, 20th Aug 2015 11:49

Winger Dylan Connolly has been named in a provisional Republic of Ireland U21 squad for a friendly against Qatar and a Euro 2017 qualifier against Andorra early next month.

The Irish youngsters take on the Qataris on Friday 4th September and are in Andorra four days later.

Connolly, who joined the Blues from Shelbourne in January and has been on the first-team bench on a number of occasions but so far without making his debut, has previously won four U21 caps.

In March the 20-year-old netted the winning goal as Ireland beat Andorra 1-0 in the home qualifier in Waterford.

Happy for Connolly, but genuinely shocked that McDonnell hasn't been called up. Is he injured?

Fine but why sign all these youngsters from Ireland but not use them. They should be in the Cup team if only as subs otherwise MM should look further afield

@pilgrimblue I remember MM coming into Town and everyone knew what he should be doing and had opinions on what he was doing right and wrong. His first priority was to get the team hard to beat, so he built a squad (with no money) from the back, trying to keep us tight and disciplined. Then he started to get us pressing teams and turning them around - there were howls of derision here about 'hoof ball' and we should be playing like Barcelona etc etc. Again, no money to spend. Now he's brought in some serious quality into the team, some bought for peanuts, others quality loanees and without any doubt whatsoever, he's also picked a few for the future. Kids like Connolly, McDonnell, Yowert, Emmanuel, Kenlock and now the new young keeper - shows once again that MM has a far better longer term view of things than any of us. If MM has brought them in, he'll give them every chance to get in the team. But he won't just put them there because he has them. They need to show him that they've earned it. Some will, some won't. But I'd love to see young Connolly step up, for me he has bags of talent.
