Alabi Signs Deal
Monday, 24th Aug 2015 12:16

Trialist striker James Alabi has signed a one-year deal with the Blues, which includes an option for a further season. Town manager Mick McCarthy revealed that the 20-year-old former Stoke and Celtic frontman had been offered terms at the end of last week.

Alabi, released by the Potters at the end of last season without having made a senior appearance for them, played in the Town U21s’ victories over Leeds and Coventry and scored a goal in each game, impressing the Blues boss.

“The trial has gone well,” Alabi told the club site. “I just got my head down and showed the manager what I can do.

“I see this at the start of my career now. I don’t think I have really had the opportunities at other clubs but the manager here has told me to come in, work hard and we will see what happens.

“I was offered something at Sheffield Wednesday but I knew Ipswich were interested in having a look at me and I’m delighted to have got a contract sorted. Now it’s up to me to impress Mick McCarthy.”

The Londoner played youth football with Stoke and then Celtic before returning to the Britannia Stadium and then spending spells on loan at Scunthorpe (twice), Mansfield, Forest Green Rovers and Accrington Stanley. In January he had a trial with Dutch side De Graafschap.

Alabi could be involved in tonight’s U21 game against Cardiff City at Portman Road (KO 7pm).

Meanwhile, ex-skipper Carlos Edwards has rejoined his former club Millwall on a short-term deal until January having overcome the serious knee injury he suffered at the start of last season.

The 36-year-old's previous contract with the Lions was up at the end of June.

Worth a punt definitely. Will have to be good to play though. Our strikers look exceptional.

Will opposition fans change their chanting from "Who are ya? Who are ya?" to "Where were you? Where were you?" if he comes on for the first team as a sub?

Excellent, looks yet another option up front in that he is a big unit! Big challenge to push for first team, would have been ideal for sub. on Saturday as no striker on bench so opportunity is there.

Pleased for Carlos also

First thing I've noticed is what a man mountain this guy is!!! He is massive. Secondly he scored 2 goals in 2 games, whilst on trial, can't ask for more than that!!! Good luck at town, work hard and I'm sure you'll get your rewards. COYB!!!

We are so strong up front this season it's getting embarrassing, & we still have Varney to come back by Christmas, all going well.
With Murph having started the season slowly with a niggly injury, it's no harm to have another striker with presence available to us. He'll find it difficult to get into the first team with Sears, McGoldrick & Pitman all available, but he does offer something different if called upon and clearly has an eye for goal. There will be a few games this season where strenght, power & directness will pay better dividends than the neat, tidy & intricate play which Didz, Freddie & Brett can revel in, so without Murph being fit, Alabi might just get a run.

Varney might well be on the blower to his agent right now! Hello, yeah, can you find me a club where I am at worst 3rd choice plz? That's no reflection on Reg who did a decent job but my word we have some options

The other possibility could be to send him out on loan? Who knows. But as others have said, worth a punt and for that reason I like these 1 year contracts with the option for a further year. Think Bajner vs Bru last season.

He's very good with both feet.
Not a new Nouble. Seems stronger and his left foot shot is clinical.
Had a bad time of it up till now but this is a fresh start to him. I wish him the best of luck but will be hard to get ahead of the 4 up front.
