Town Keen on Dunne Claim
Tuesday, 25th Aug 2015 14:14

Town boss Mick McCarthy is showing interest in former Ireland international defender Richard Dunne, according to a report in Ireland.

The Irish Sun claims McCarthy, who gave Dunne his Ireland debut back in 2000, wants to bring the former Manchester City, Aston Villa and Everton man to join the Blues' promotion push.

Dunne is said to have a couple of options following his release by QPR at the end of last season, although he is also weighing-up whether to hang up his boots at the age of 35.

The Blues moving for another senior centre-half seems unlikely with Christophe Berra and Tommy Smith established at the heart of the defence and skipper Luke Chambers, currently operating at right-back, also primarily a central defender.

Town are also close to bringing in Piotr Malarczyk from Korona Kielce, a central defender or right-back.

The 24-year-old Pole is understood to have travelled to Ipswich yesterday with talks regarding his £8,500 switch believed to be ongoing.

I think its not a bad idea provided Dunne knows he is cover. He is vastly experienced which could be very useful and can step in if need be, he was a terrific defender maybe doing his badges at the same time but I would anticipate he would play only in emergency circumstances

I'd love this. Real experience and quality that can only be beneficial to our younger players. He's operated at the very highest level for the majority of his career, and also has experience of getting promoted from the Championship. He'd be ideal in my books.

Issue with Dunne is pace and playing Berra is a must. I guess IF the Polish lad/ Emmanuel blossom and play each game at RB we could get away with this otherwise no.

Dunne over Tommy Smith any day.

If we can afford it I'd go for it. Does seem strange though seeing as we also have the Polish chap coming in to add to fringe centre halfs such as Yorwerth and Chambers. Unless Yorwerth isn't considered first team material (seems unlikely) and nor the new guy, I can't Dunne see coming.

Sure he'd be a great influence around the place though.

Would be a great influence but hard to see him getting much game time. Great defender in his prime.

I am not commenting on this proposed signing but the persistent abuse against Tommy Smith is boring and without justification. He has been a loyal and good defender for the club for some years now and if the Brentford game is anything to go by is a far better central defender than Chambers. People have very short memories and should support the players not abuse them at every opportunity and thank goodness neither the manager or the players take any notice of this constant barrage of rubbish.

5 years ago and we would already be a Premiership side - not so sure now

No thanks. Can't see him being on small wages, we don't need him, always injured and scores 20 own goals a season. We'll get this boy from Poland and hopefully another winger/creative midfielder then we'll be nearly there.

Has Paul Jewell sneaked back into the club?

Currie10, Dunne over Tommy Smith? Don't be ridiculous...

Surely his wages would be too high to justify bench warmer status. He either starts or we don't take him I would of thought

No thanks.
Big wages surely and do we really need him?

terryball, didn't Tommy have a say in both Brentford goals. Ok playing on the left but his poor right foot often lets him down in his present position.

100% Gazelle. He definitely should get the blame for the corner and not keeping out a goal from a knock down off the woodwork while Bart was stranded and 9 others left it to him to stop a goal going in.

I don't think that's a fair comment. There have been one or two posters at whom you could probably argue have been "abusive" towards Tommy Smith, but the vast majority are just genuine fans who are expressing an opinion based on the evidence presented in front of their eyes, particularly over the last 12 months. This does not mean that they despise Tommy or even that they don't rate him, it's just that he has made a number of errors which have proven costly in important games.
Without question Christophe Berra is our best centre half, and arguably the best centre half in the Championship over the last 2 years, but there is a legitimate debate as to whether Luke Chambers would be a better centre half partner for him than Tommy.
To base your arguement purely on one game against Brentford, while ignoring the errors in a number of other games doesn't seem reasonable. The fact that Chambers has played out of position at RB for so long now means that it is difficult to fairly make a comparison as of today, but I do think it is an option worth consideration.

As for Richard Dunne, I don't think another centre half is a priority with Malarczyk likely to sign, and at 35 with his injury record I couldn't see us getting too many games out of him anyway. He would be best with a young pacy ball playing defensive partner alongside him.

Dunne has to realise he is not the commodity he once was and cannot command top dollar. I cant see us springing for him if he's on big wages because I cant see him dislodging anyone in the back 4.

Tommy over Dunne all day long. He's still learning and he gets goals. I don't understand the abuse he gets either but with Tabb not in the side I suppose someone has to cop it from certain directions don't they?

To me he offers experience cover a la Kenny last year (only better) and strength in depth. If he cant accept he will be bench warming then no, if he can and hes not making silly demands then yes

35 ----- I'm only 58 and will sign for £10k a week on a 3 year contract.

Nope.

No sorry. A 35 year old who has been without a club since the summer so will be ring rusty and behind on fitness really doesn't sound like a very good idea.

muccletonjoe added 15:52 - Aug 25
I would not have him in the team instead of Tommy, the fact is he doesn't make anymore mistakes than anyone else, they are just noticed more by people willing to spend most of the game looking for them

An unknown Polish right back and a Centre back who by his own admission might retire. Not sure if this shows the ambition needed at this stage I am afraid. Don't understand the transfer policy currently with town top of the league, best squad for an age and confidence.
