Town Closing in on Malarczyk Signing
Wednesday, 26th Aug 2015 15:26

TWTD understands that Town are hopeful of completing the signing of Korona Kielce defender Piotr Malarczyk before the end of the week.

The 24-year-old is understood to have been at Portman Road earlier this week with the Blues keen to get the formalities relating to the deal - which are more complicated as he’s being signed from an overseas club and requires international clearance - completed before the weekend.

In June Malarczyk signed a new contract with his hometown club, where he is currently skipper, but had a nominal release clause of 50,000 Polish Zloty, just over £8,500, included in the deal to allow him to move on if there was interest from a foreign side.

Malarczyk, who was previously interesting another Polish side, Jagiellonia Białystok, has been with Korona, who play in the Ekstraklasa, the Polish top flight, throughout his career.

He made his senior debut in 2009 and has now made 131 appearances, scoring eight goals.

Malarczyk has been named in this week’s Ekstraklasa Team of the Week for his performance in their 2-1 win away against Legia Warsaw.

The former Polish U17, U19 and U21 international plays either as a centre-half or a right-back with manager Mick McCarthy revealing that he was targeting a player in that mould earlier in the month.

The Blues made multiple offers for Hearts youngster Jordan McGhee before moving onto Malarczyk.

He looks a good prospect, like Knudsen he can develop in the early part of the season, or later on when given game time. He's likely to get games as well. It's this making progress thing I'm not sure about. This is a huge season, and for all those reasons I would have thought the cover we need is a defender who knows the Championship inside out, and has promotion experience. Richard Stearman, for instance. If there's a RB vacancy, a genuine alternative to Josh Emmanuel.

It really is good to have overseas players in the side-firstly it shows that our scouting network is broad (remember the Keane days heavy with Sunderland players?) secondly it generates international interest in the club. While it still feels like a local 'family' club it's still important that the club has a wider currency. Really hope this happens & look forward to seeing Piotr in blue. A proper right back at last?

Don't forget people we have a large Polish community in ipswich now, my friend for one and he loves football so this can only be a good thing for getting more fans in the gates.

Can anyone tell me anything about this defender is he any good. With a clause in his contract saying that anyclub putting bid in for 50.000 polish zloty (£8.500) cannot be that good hope im wrong.

The low fee is only because he was out of contract in the summer and could have left for nothing. But he then signed a new contract with the low release clause in it so he could carry on playing for his hometown club until an offer which actually appealed to him came in. It doesn't mean that he'd automatically go to just any old club who happened to offer that, and he had apparently turned down other interest.

Why are people saying 'excellent signing' like they've actually heard of him or seen him play before? However, if he's good enough for Mick, he's good enough for me.

I've just seen Kevin Nolan's been released from West Ham. Might be worth a punt until the end of the season?

Looking at the Polish pages via Google Translate (I know highly reliable) it looks like his club are not signing the release papers in a fit of pique. There is no doubt that the player has £8,500 in his contract as the release clause, but the club are sticking their fingers in their ears, closing their eyes and singing lah la la at the top of their voices in the hope that Town will offer more. Dream on - this is Mick we are talking about.
