Australian International to Join Town
Friday, 28th Aug 2015 15:09

Town have revealed that free agent Australian international winger Tommy Oar is joining the club.

The 23-year-old is due at the club over the weekend having left Dutch side FC Utrecht - where he made 105 Eredivisie appearances, scoring four goals - after five years in the summer.

The Queenslander was previously with the Brisbane Roar, having played youth football with Palm Beach and QAS.

Manager Mick McCarthy told Ipswich Player: “We have watched Tommy a few times and checked him out on our scouting system. We have done our due diligence on him and he will be a good signing for us.

“I spoke to [former Holland international] Jan Wouters, who worked with him at Utrecht, and he gave him a glowing report.

“He is quick and direct and puts some great crosses in. He does all the tracking back as well. I’m delighted to have him. He’s a full Australian international and he will add to the competition here.”

Oar has won 25 full caps, scoring two goals, having made his international debut in March 2010.

He was a member of this year's Asian Cup-winning squad but played only one game from the bench.

Oar was included in the 28-man provisional squad for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa but didn't make the final cut.

Having been in the squad for the U20 World Cup in Colombia in 2011, he then started all three of the Socceroos' games at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Oar was recently close to joining Athletic Bilbao but the deal fell through as he was deemed to have insufficient Basque heritage, despite his paternal grandparents having come from the region.

Athletic only recruit players from the Basque country or who have come through their youth system.

Oar also received interest from clubs in the Middle East and elsewhere abroad, and had also been linked with Brighton, Hull City and Fulham.

I know him pretty well from his Utrecht days. Excellent player but was injured about 70% of his time there if I remember correctly.

Sounds like an impressive signing.

Phil
This maybe is an unfair question…
Just out of curiosity do you hear about all potential new signings on the grapevine? If the club asked you not to mention it do you keep it under wraps to until the club announces the signing?

The reason why I am asking is that to a certain extent most new signings weren't really a surprise but with MM this seems to be different.

Thanks
Matt

OAR-GASMIC signing baby.

One of those players I've seen a few times, especially with the Eredivisie coverage and thought how good he was. Amazed we've got him!

I'm full of sh*t. Played two complete seasons. Was probably injured the first two years. Won't be in the starting 11 a lot though. Current midfielders are better at the moment.

Another exciting signing out of the blue. Plays on the left wing, so will be interesting to see how Big Mick accommodates both him and Fraser in the team.

Double signing! Was saying the other day that I'd be worried if Maitland-Niles and Fraser picked up injuries so having Oar and Toure is pretty decent back up. After seeing Jay Tabb put in an utterly dreadful performance playing left wing at Doncaster the other night, this was a position that really needed more depth. Utrecht are no mugs so he could be a very good find.

So the one thing we mainly lacked last year was width. Now we've signed two left wingers and two right wingers as well as topping up in other areas of the pitch. Can't say fairer than that so well done to MM TC and Milne aswell as Evans for allowing us to massively bolster the squad. Surely we have to finally do it this year! COYB

Also noticed he grew up nearby to the Ipswich in Queensland, so coming here will be like a home from home.

Bit worried about the language barrier. Perhaps Tommy Smith can translate. I think the dialect is similar ;-)

Seriously, he looks like a great signing. Expectation/excitement levels in my household have now reached 11 out of 10. Even our postman has put a bet on town as champions, and we live in Brighton!

Interesting how MM initially only seemed to recruit British and Irish players when he was digging us out of the hole left by previous managers, with Veseli being the only overseas (exluding Ireland) player in the squad at one point (unless you count Smith, who plays for NZ but was born in England).

Now we're pushing for promotion, we have Bialkowski, Parr, Knudsen, Bru, Toure, Oar and Malarczyk (plus any others I might have missed).

Squad's looking just about complete - still not totally convinced by our keepers but as far as the rest of the squad's concerned we look as strong as we have done since we got relegated 13 years ago.

Great work Mick & co.

Our first Australian, or am I forgetting someone?

four goals in 105 games isn't good for a direct quick winger...it suggests he can't shoot, unlike Ryan Fraser which is the reason why he's only on loan..

Just saying :)

Can he bat at 4? I hear there is a vacancy there as well as on the wing.

This guy looks like he is the dogs rollocks!
What a fantastic series of transfers and Fraser is the Loan Cherry on the top of our transfer window cake (see what I did there?)

Not the first Aussie - I had a vague recollection of someone and found Andrew Bernal - he played 9 matches for us in '88, before 6 seasons later with Reading
