Murphy and McGoldrick in Provisional Irish Squad for Euro Play-Off
Wednesday, 28th Oct 2015 12:51

Town strikers David McGoldrick and Daryl Murphy have both been named in a 39-man provisional Republic of Ireland squad ahead of their two-legged Euro 2016 play-off against Bosnia and Herzegovina next month.

The first game in Zenica, Bosnia will take place on Friday 13th November with the second at the Aviva Stadium, Dublin on the following Monday. The squad will be reduced before they meet up on Monday 9th November.

"After finishing third in a difficult qualifying group, we enter into the play-offs against a very good team in Bosnia and Herzegovina,” manager Martin O’Neill said at a press conference this morning.

“Our fate is in our own hands and we will be doing all that we can to qualify for next summer's finals.

"We will play the second leg at the Aviva Stadium and that is a big plus for us because the Irish supporters were fantastic in our last game there against Germany and we know that there will be a similar atmosphere for this play-off."

Murphy has previously won 17 full caps and McGoldrick two and both are still looking for their first international goals.

Former Blues skipper Jon Walters, ex-loanee Paul Green and one-time Town academy schoolboy and ballboy Richard Keogh are also in the squad.

Republic of Ireland: David Forde (Millwall), Shay Given (Stoke City), Keiren Westwood (Sheffield Wednesday), Darren Randolph (West Ham United), Rob Elliot (Newcastle United), Richard Keogh (Derby County), Marc Wilson (Stoke City), Seamus Coleman (Everton), Cyrus Christie (Derby County), John O’Shea (Sunderland), Alex Pearce (Derby County), Shane Duffy (Blackburn Rovers), Ciaran Clark (Aston Villa), Paul McShane (Reading), Stephen Ward (Burnley), Greg Cunningham (Preston North End), Robbie Brady (Norwich City), James McCarthy (Everton), Jeff Hendrick (Derby County), Darron Gibson (Everton), Harry Arter (Bournemouth), Eunan O’Kane (Bournemouth), Glenn Whelan (Stoke City), Paul Green (Rotherham United), Aiden McGeady (Everton), James McClean (West Bromwich Albion), Alan Judge (Brentford), Anthony Pilkington (Cardiff City), David Meyler (Hull City), Jonathan Walters (Stoke City), Wes Hoolahan (Norwich City), Robbie Keane (LA Galaxy), Shane Long (Southampton), Daryl Murphy (Ipswich Town), Kevin Doyle (Colorado Rapids), Anthony Stokes (Celtic), David McGoldrick (Ipswich Town), Adam Rooney (Aberdeen), Simon Cox (Bristol City).

On current gormless neither should get in the final squad. Neither can hit an elephants arse with a banjo at present.

Only Town fans could make a negative out of a player picked for his country.

Great news for the lads, but am surprised about Murphy, who is unfortunately woefully short of form.

Whatever their current form these two should be starting week in week out, they are two match winners who bring the best options to our attack along with Freddie. They'll come good again.

If Bru can get into the Mauritius squad then these two should easily get into the Ireland team!

In Murphy's case i think we have to remember that he has not been fully fit either ...

Probably the same with dids - both getting back to full sharpness.

Does having Pitman around as well make it too complicated for Murphy? perhaps he needs to be the number 9 and play every week like last year to really have the sense of "leading the line" ?

I guess MM would have dealt with any attitudes, but you never know?

Some will say Murphy over-performed last year, but all he did was keep shooting when he got the ball ... if you shoot enough times, you will score eventually.

Time to settle down and trust ... how we are performing by Christmas will determine our season - where we are now we are only about 9 points off playoffs, but only the same above relegation ... and none of us have any idea which way we will go ... or if we will stay stuck in the middle.

I'm English - but agree with those who are proud of any of our squad playing for their country ... and seeing the benefits of this when they get back!
