Town Draw Portsmouth at Home
Monday, 7th Dec 2015 19:18

Town have drawn League Two Portsmouth at Portman Road in the third round of the FA Cup.

The teams have met in the FA Cup on two previous occasions, both within the last 10 years on Suffolk soil when the visitors were in the Premier League.

The Blues played Pompey at the third round stage in 2007/08 when the visitors won 1-0 via a David Nugent goal, Liam Trotter having been controversially sent off in the first half.

Pompey also visited Portman Road at the same point in the competition two years prior to that when a Dario Silva goal saw the Hampshire club to another 1-0 victory.

The teams most recently met in the Championship in the 2011/12 campaign when Town won both games 1-0, Keith Andrews netting the goal at home and Michael Chopra at Fratton Park.

Historically, the Blues have won 19 games between the two clubs (18 in the league, one in the League Cup), 11 have been draws (11) and Pompey have won 11 (nine in the league plus the two FA Cup ties).

Blues defender Matt Clarke is currently on loan with Portsmouth but his half-season spell is set to end on January 3rd, prior to the FA Cup third round and even if his time there is extended he wouldn't be able to face his parent club.

The Pompey squad also includes ex-Blues Brian Murphy and Gary Roberts, while former academy striker Caolan Lavery is on loan from Sheffield Wednesday.

Portsmouth beat Macclesfield 2-1 at home in round one and Accrington Stanley 1-0 in the second round, also at Fratton Park.

Third round ties will be played between Friday 8th and Sunday 11th January.

Meanwhile, James Alabi’s loan club Grimsby Town are in second round action on TV this evening when they take on Shrewsbury at Blundell Park (BT Sport 2, KO 7.45pm).

No excuses, any team we put out should be good enough to win this game at home to a division 2 club. Good opportunity to progress, but suspect this won't get too much coverage!

I hope we play the first team, to give the fans and competition and opposition the respect they deserve

We can only hope that Mick puts out a reasonably strong team, which means not the current back four!

Portsmouth have large fan base and will bring a good following so at least it should be a good atmosphere, hope MM puts out a decent side as it is a good chance to progress.

I understand that the overwhelming priority is promotion, but, please, let's take the Cup seriously this year. A good run could really lift morale.

The man with the hat is banned from portman rd.
He got on the top of boxes a few seasons ago and did a stupid dad dance.

If we charge £15 a ticket we should hopefully sell out. Can't see it happening though.

Memo to Mick-----could we possibly take this seriously this time?

Memo to club-----be sensible on prices---£15 should do all over and we may get some sort of atmosphere.

Heres hoping!!

Didn't Soton price our match at £10 for adults last year? That price would see us sell out or near to for sure. COYB

Ray is on a winner with this one, although I suspect his loyalties will be torn towards Pompey as they are his home Town Club.
My nephew is a big Pompey fan and he told me that the guy with the top hat works in a Library. This was the season they won promotion and I must admit I found his conducting of the Pompey fans for half an hour very entertaining and the Ipswich fans were joining in at times. We also won the game 3 - 0 with a great goal from Pablo, so a repeat of that scoreline will do nicely.
