Chambers: Leeds Boss’s Comments Disrespectful and Staggering
Thursday, 14th Jan 2016 18:06

Luke Chambers has hit back at Leeds manager Steve Evans for his comments after the Blues’ 2-1 victory over the Whites on Tuesday, which the Town skipper felt were “disrespectful” and “staggering”.

Evans accused Town of simply “lumping” the ball up to striker Daryl Murphy, said they had been “as bad in spells as we were” and dismissively added that if the Blues are “the benchmark [for the play-offs] then we’ll take that benchmark”.

Chambers, who scored Town’s equaliser five minutes after the break with Brett Pitman netting the winner in injury time, said he and the rest of the squad were less than impressed.

“Myself and the boys felt very disappointed by his post-match comments, having read them after the game,” Chambers writes in his column in the programme for Saturday’s match against Preston.

“I don’t whether he’s addressing the Leeds supporters who weren’t at the game to try and save face but I’ve no idea where he’s coming from.

“Yes, they look the lead and had a good 10-15-minute spell but after that it was one-way traffic.

“For him to then disrespect us as a team and say that if we are the benchmark for sixth place then he will take that, is honestly quite staggering.

“At the end of the day, we’ve walked away with six points off them this season and we are the ones who are in the play-off places fighting to get into the Premier League.

"I had a lot of respect for him before the game but I've lost some of that now.

“Nobody at Portman Road on Tuesday, even the most avid Leeds fan, would have thought they deserved to beat us, apart from Steve Evans and for him to even suggest that after the game is, in my opinion, disrespectful to the football club, the manager, the players - to everyone really.

“To their credit, I saw that a lot of Leeds fans disagreed with their manager and held their hands up, admitting we were the better team and deserved to win.

“I haven’t looked at the stats but I’m confident that we would have had more possession, more shots and more chances in their box. The stat that matters though is that we won the game.”

Evans was also highly critical of referee Fred Graham after the game - “I thought he was absolutely garbage" - and the official wouldn’t leave the field following the final whistle until the furious Leeds boss had been removed from the tunnel by stewards.

Blueboy...

Yes everyone is entitled to their opinion. Me thinking you're a tw*t is my opinion yes, but does that make me right? I wouldn't call that an honest assessment by Evans AT ALL. It was more based on his frustration and blaming, it's also called professionalism within your trade no matter the circumstance. People like Evans with his attitude doesn't work unless you're the likes of Sir Alex who has 19years and countless trophies to back it up with built up frustration. So no completely and utterly disagree with your point towards him, your point in general is correct but in this situation you are the one who is looking at it in the wrong way.

Don't think we should get uptight by something he said . Is he respected in the footbal game for his knowledge ? .... Not that I'm aware . Football credentials ? Achieved anything ? No ,no . May have won some award for pie eating but that doesn't count . I know someone well who played under him at Rotherham and he agreed he is a knob without a clue so move on to Saturday . COYB.

Enjoyed that interview even more than the result. He has embarrassed himself with that take on the game. If anyone needed another reason to want Leeds to fail miserably then here it is. P.S Thanks for the 6 points.

Blueboy, there's a difference between holding an opinion and just making things up.

Just listened to evans again, if he is honest he will feel embarrassed by his post match interview, especially if he listens to Garry Abbots honest assessment," No one could begrudge ipswich, they were the better team in the second half, and they were second best in the second half". They were defending for their lives for the whole of the second 45 mins..

I have said in a previous blog following the match that I couldn't believe some of the Leeds' Manager's comments. We played some great stuff - and look at the highlights - their goal was hoof ball and it didn't even find their man, whereas our winner was a great long pass controlled first time by Frazer, crossed, header, goal.

No love lost again against Leeds.

Read in the paper about this the other day and wondered if he was referring to the same game as Tuesday night but as a few others have said maybe it's more about our style. The fact is MM is a grinder of points over a season and you could say it's more substance than style with his management.

Anyway I wouldn't take too much as gospel coming from a man who wears mascara.

I prefer to say we play percentage football rather than long ball. The initial 'long pass' from the back may be 50/50 in terms of who wins the ball, but Murphy will win more than he loses, and then you are further down the pitch, quicker, plus you can tell a lot of work is done on winning the second ball. Effective and works for us most of the time. Plus we do play some good stuff in between as well.

blueboy, how on earth can u say he gave an honest opinion? pretty much everything he said in that interview was garbage. we played very little hoofball on Tuesday, in fact we outplayed them for the vast majority of the game, yes the ref was crap, but in their favour, not ours so even wrong there. jas, yes we have got this reputation for playing hoofball but that doesn't mean a manager should criticise your performance, citing that when it wasn't even true in that match. I have to say that's the most ridiculous interview ive heard from a manager in over 40 years of watching football. right up there with the famous kevin keegan rant at alex ferguson some years ago.

What is unusual here is that that the players felt the need to respond, and they do this correctly through the skipper. Our style was criticised openly last year by some managers including Eddie Howe, Karanka (a bit more gracious), and the Watford chap. Earlier, under Keane, we were famously criticised by Fabregas. The difference is that all these other folk were actually achieving something and actually didn't rant. Imagine how Ryan Frazer, Freddie Sears and Kevin Bru must feel about these comments after tearing Leeds apart. Mick speaks for the club, but the skipper speaks for the players.

Evans always looks like he just come offstage from playing Widow Twanky in panto. In our house, whenever he says anything someone always follows with "Oh no he didn't!" "He's behind you!" etc etc. We're easily amused :)

It's bizarre how Evans was praising Mick as the man every manager in the Championship looks up to, then proceeds to spout that rubbish after the game. He clearly lost his rag and probably regrets what he said.

"Sheffield Wednesday are better than that lot"...Errr we beat them too Evans...doubt you will.

Evans is well known as a nasty piece of work and frankly his opinion on anything isn't worth worrying about.

Anyway, as someone on the forum said, only six Leeds managers until Christmas!!!

I am furious with Steve Evans comments it's a total lack of professionalism from him something our manager Micky McCarthy would never lower himself to do. I'm totally biased I will admit but our football on Tuesday night was exceptional. With bru, Fraser, and sears in midfield there is no reason why we cannot continue playing that way. COYB . Up yours Steve Evans

Well done to Chambo, who is improving in the right back role and is doing the job selflessly. He has popped up with a couple of important goals against QPR and Dirty Leeds. The 1 thing he has done is make the fans proud to support the club again. He Provides the link between the club and the fans. A great captain, unlike leadboots, who was terrible. Steve Evans, despite being a rather portly gentleman is a small fish in a big pond at bellend road. He has to deflect the fact they lost to a team above them, on a smaller budget and the fact other than their goal we were better than them all over the pitch
