McCarthy Switches Entire XI at Portsmouth
Tuesday, 19th Jan 2016 19:18

Town boss Mick McCarthy has named the anticipated entirely changed XI for this evening’s FA Cup third round replay at League Two Portsmouth.

Bartosz Bialkowski starts in goal with Josh Emmanuel at right-back, Myles Kenlock left-back and Piotr Malarczyk and Paul Digby the centre-halves, as they were in the first game between the sides at Portman Road, which ended 2-2 10 days ago.

In midfield, Luke Hyam skippers and is joined in the centre by Jay Tabb with Ainsley Maitland-Niles on the right and Tommy Oar on the left. Up front, former Pompey striker Luke Varney is partnered by Brett Pitman.

The bench features Joe Robinson, Kyle Hammond and Shane McLoughlin, who are yet to make a first-team appearance and Adam McDonnell, whose only senior game for the Blues came in the Capital One Cup at Doncaster.

Portsmouth name both ex-Town players, keeper Brian Murphy and winger Gary Roberts, in a team featuring three changes from the side which lined up at Portman Road with skipper Michael Doyle, Gareth Evans and Christian Burgess replacing Danny Hollands, Ben Close and Adam McGurk.

Portsmouth: Murphy, Davies, Webster, Burgess, Stevens, Barton, Doyle (c), Evans, Roberts, Bennett, McNulty. Subs: Bass, May, Close, Tollitt, Naismith, McGurk, Chaplin.

Town: Bialkowski, Emmanuel, Digby, Malarczyk, Kenlock, Hyam (c), Tabb, Maitland-Niles, Oar, Varney, Pitman. Subs: Gerken, Robinson, Hammond, Coke, McDonnell, Touré, McLoughlin. Referee: Andy Woolmer (Northamptonshire).

We have heard from MM and Milne on countless occasions this season regarding how strong our squad is and how there is no need to strengthen. I can therefore only assume that our fringe players are good enough to beat a league two side, otherwise it doesn't suggest 'strong' to me.

Only concerned about Digby. The rest make up a decent enough "second 11" to be honest.

Winnable.

Sorry to say it but I think it will be 3-1 to Portsmouth in normal time.

It's disgraceful. An insult to the club the supporters and the competition. McCarthy clearly doesn't care which is fine but he should at least come out and say so. I just hope these lads don't get stuffed and if by some miracle we win they all get to start vs Bournemouth.

Personally I would play a stronger team but it will be fascinating to see which way this one goes. A good move making Hyam Captain.

Hopefully the defence have been practicing together, as Digby and Malarczyk were pulled all over the place in the first game meaning Chambers had to be moved into the centre. No Chambers tonight. It'll be very interesting.

Yes the f.a cup used to mean so much. Now is low down on priority list. I fell out of love with cups long ago. League/money is king now.

Digby is an intersting one. Do you leave him out and shoot his confidence or play him and hope he excels and if not, shoot his confidence. Mick's gone for the latter and I hope it works out.

Frankly i think this side adequately illustrates the complete lack of genuine appreciation the business has for its paying public. It is indeed a total insult to the people who have paid hard earned money to travel all that way to Portsmouth.
If anyone thinks that this club listens/cares for/appreciates or even tolerates its support this has been the dawning of reality.
I have loved and supported ITFC for 50 years but these days I wouldn't give them the scrapings off the bottom of my shoe.

Well that's our cup run over.Complete lack of respect for the Ipswich paying public...second class fare in business terms. The memories of 1978 are most distant than ever.
When we played the two semi finals in 1975 we were down to the barebones through injuries but Sir Bobby played his strongest 11 regardless of the injuries...and we had the best youth set up in Great Britain then.
The current incumbent is a bone headed stubborn mule...who wants us out of the cups. The term "Cup run" simply doesnt exist but we, the paying public deserve more...much more.

@spiegal,I would assume that nobody that has gone tonight thought that there would be anything like a full strength side picked so they can have no reason to feel insulted.
My only hope is that Pitman does not get injured because we need him for important games.

I fully agree with previous posts that have criticised this selection.
Irrespective of the result tonight we have been disrespectful to the once great FA Cup competition. Not just us but many other clubs have done so too.

A lot of these players are deemed to be reserves and/or fringe players that in Mick's opinion are not good enough to start in his preferred starting eleven. In truth most will only play because of injury or suspension to the preferred starting eleven so why waste everyone's time, particularly the supporters.
Tonight's team could have played any friendly game to get match practice but we should always play our strongest team in every competition such as the league cup, FA cup and league.

I am somewhat perplexed by many of the above comments.
In 1978 squads consisted of 14 players, I believe 12 were named for each match and only one sub permitted. This without doubt contributed to a much smaller gap between top and bottom. Therefore more clubs like ours could punch above their weight.
We are where we are as a club today - it is hard to admit and accept but we are a small club and this season punching above its weight. The league has to be a priority and we may fall short on that front - though I hope not.
So all those moaning about tonight's team, I understand the frustration but surely if the league is the priority and this is our 4th game in 10 days, we were always going to rest the first team. I personally am frustrated but not at the team but at the fact that our club is where it is. The manager regardless of tonight's result is doing a good job within the financial constraints imposed. We are better than we were under Jewell & Keane and we are improving year on year, I for one get frustrated but try to balance that with reality. A defeat tonight will ruin my week but not as much as when we had a team with no pride in the blue of ITFC

You should be ashamed of yourself MM!! Disrespect for the competition, our Club & it's history in the FA Cup & the fans travelling down. Crap football most of the season too!!

Debacle, 2-0 down... Irrespective we should be beating a team 2 divisions lower...disgrace. On this we need to buy a 2nd Xi as this lot are crap
