McCarthy Won't Sub Players Singled Out for Abuse
Saturday, 9th Apr 2016 06:00

Town boss Mick McCarthy says fans singling out one of his players for abuse are going to be disappointed if they believe they’ll influence him into making a substitution.

Jonathan Douglas, who the Blues announced has triggered an additional year on his contract yesterday having hit the 30-league start mark, was the latest in a long line of Town players to be jeered by some sections of the Portman Road crowd during Tuesday’s 0-0 home draw with Charlton.

“I think you know full well, anybody that starts to get abuse on the pitch, they ain’t going to come off, that’s for sure,” McCarthy said.

“Because I certainly wouldn’t appease the masses by taking one off and I wouldn’t embarrass one of my players by doing it. That’s not right.

“And probably that’s why we’ve got such a good atmosphere in here, that’s why we’ve got such a good feel about it and why everybody trusts each other and would work hard for each other.

“I’ve been at places before where one player gets singled out. It was Ainsley Maitland-Niles a few weeks ago. The poor kid’s only 18. Dougie’s 34, he’s big enough and old enough. He always puts a shift in.”

McCarthy, who wants everyone pulling in the same direction when his side face Brentford at Portman Road this afternoon, needing a win to stand any hope of reaching the play-offs, says fans booing their own players is wholly counterproductive.

“I’m not coming in here to have a go at our supporters, they’ve been wonderful with me for nearly four years,” he added.

“It’s frustrating, it’s frustrating for me and the players and it’s frustrating for them. But, it doesn’t help anybody.

“I’d imagine when you’re sat at home writing your reports and somebody’s giving it in your ear hole, it wouldn’t help either.”

Douglas, 34, seems unlikely to start today's match, Town's third game in eight days, having played the full 90 minutes of the two previous fixtures.

Your arrogance and stubbornness really are starting to grate on me now, Mick. I sincerely hope you do the right thing and leave at the end of the season because you're driving supporters away now.

Well said MM. Good to see you standing up for our players. Fans seem to have forgotten that these players belong to OUR team. Singling them out for abuse is simply not on. I am sure Douglas will start against his old club and give a good shift.

If we don't get behind our players who will? Brentford fans aren't going to be cheering Douglas on.

The person most in need of substituting - permanently - is you McCarthy.
Say no to favourites, round pegs in square holes. hoofball, negative 'tactics', dire 'entertainment' and contempt for supporters.
Bring football back to ITFC

Some of these players should not be playing Championship football. That's the real issue. Douglas? AMN? Digby? Solid league 1 footballers. Toure? League 2. As for Coke? -----------. I get that these players aren't up to standard Mick but that's not our fault as we didn't sign them. How are we meant to show that we aren't happy with the situation? I get that Fraser/Bishop have been injured but the replacements have been beyond appalling. And why is our BEST midfielder (Foley) on the subs bench? All fans, even pro-Mick fans can clearly see that' that is just plain odd.

Pjisagod, it's not odd; its arrogance. He's doing/saying this to stick two fingers up to the fans. He may as well walk to the centre circle at the beginning of a match and then just stick his middle finger up to the North Stand and slowly turn a 360.

You're close to done here Mick.

How about you substitute players that aren't playing well? These may quite often be the same players that the fans are taking their frustrations out on.

So you're worried about embarrassing someone who may be embarrassing us? How helpful is that when a player playing okay is hauled off because you refuse to sub his colleague playing terribly?

Even if this is what McCarthy thinks it is not what you say on the eve of a match to paying punters who are also to decide whether to renew or not. I understand what he's saying but he never says it in a way that doesn't seem to screen f you to the fans.

He can simply say the crowd won't influence him without suggesting he actually won't remove a player who is hurting us on the pitch.

Trust me Mick. It'll get more embarrassing for a player to get booed loudly because you've kept them on when they are shocking. I don't agree with booing our players but other fans will do and all you've done this week is drive more and more wedges between yourself and the fans and unravel your good work.

In a season where we've only scored about 20 home games, won only a third of home games and played abysmally. The first time ever we've not scored more than 2 in a home game.

Portman Road is fast becoming poisonous and that's on you Mick.

MM is totally right to stick up for his players. The poisonous atmosphere is down to those who single out players for abuse. It does not help anybody.

Losing MM will be a huge mistake for this club. We certainly won't be fighting for a top 6 position next season

Good points Kuqicoup. Actually arrogant man is in the habit of substituting players playing well, not his favourites of course, usually someone he thinks needs a rest for trying to be creative or passing the ball

This is turning into a nightmare situation, McCarthy is of course right to stick by his players, any manager worth his salt would & I understand why McCarthy does. However, coming out with such a arrogant, public statement is no way to build bridges with the fans. We have a right to express our feelings, you signed these players Mick, if they are not up to it you only have yourself to blame. And you're wrong, the fans reaction does have a influence on who you play, last year Tabby (he's great Tabby) was struggling, you choose not to play him, Maitland-Niles earlier this season, was clearly lacking confidence & struggling, you choose not to play him, now Douglas. We watch this dross every week, 16,000 + people are wrong are they Mick?? You have the platform to defend your players, media, TWTD etc..... We don't, so have to express our disillusion on match days, it's the only platform we have. I don't think the booing is any reflection on Douglas himself, it's aimed at YOU!!! Because you're the one who has the ability to change how we play, the style of play & the correct players in the correct position, but you choose not to..... So you will have to put up with it Mick, accept it or better still, walk away...... I'll still be supporting ITFC long after you're a distant memory

Supporters very divided over mm . Any manager is going to stick up for his players. They are the one who is selecting them but douglas is an exceptionally poor player and knowing we have better options who are not getting a look in is incedibly frustrating. I do now actually think it would be the better option if mm left the club and we take our chances with evans finding a replacement.

I've just paid £529 to renew plus my two sons tickets at a £10 ( acknowledgement of something the club have got right). My main reason for renewal is the family day out aspect with my young boys who love it, blissfully unaware of the degradation of the club. Quite frankly what is on offer for the money is poor and you may not want to substitute a player but at the same time I will voice my opinion at the game as a paying customer be it cheering good effort and play or otherwise if a player hoofs the ball out for a corner for the half way line......for example. A goal would be nice today and a performance, so let's see some of the fantastic performances in training you harp on about on the pitch please.

I don't agree with booing individual players during the game. However, in the event if Douglas it was abundantly clear he needed to be subbed so MM arrogance is to an extent holding us back. I also think people are entitled to their opinion and although I don't personally boo, can understand people showing their dissatisfaction at the current situation and hierarchy at the club at the end of the match. I don't recall the last time that so many people have felt fed up with the football on offer/investment from the owner. Not everyone, but certainly more seem to be assessing whether to renew. The club simply don't care though.

Appears to me to be the bizarre decision making of Mick. He has good midfielders (foley etc) and leaves them sitting watching the game. Foley makes all the difference to our midfield and is the engine that drives us forwards. One of the best midfielders we've had for years and what's the betting we lose him in the Summer? Meanwhile we endure mind numbing hoofball for 93 minutes.
We lost Parr who I regarded as the most versatile players at the club. Connolly,Henshall,Oar: the list goes on and on. Sam Ford was our most promising youth player and now he's gone. In close season we'll end up selling a good number of players and our team for next year will look like this-
Gerken,
Chambers, Smith, Berra, Knudsen
Skuse,Hyam,Douglas, Coke, Digby
Varney

Am I looking forward to next season? am I hell!

Want to win the game, and I have heard this a few times recently, can you afford to play Douglas. As a supporter for more than 50 years I moan when my favourite players aren't in the team. But to me its clear our midfield is not creative enough. Same with picking Gerken earlier in the season. My season ticket has been cancelled, I will still go when the entertainment warrants

“I'm not coming in here to have a go at our supporters"
well it sounds to me you are and to accuse the fans of "abuse" is disgraceful and great timing with 2 days to go before the early bird season ticket deadline I'm sure Milne will be delighted.
Personally i don't agree with booing our own players but understand how some fans become so frustrated when as in Douglas's case pass after pass goes astray and when they do go as planned they are normally sideways or backward!

Wish we had booed Pringle first half against Charlton. Might have kept him on then.

I think MM is rattled.

Spend less time winding up our own fans and more time sorting out the mess on the pitch Mick or your time here is done!

The thing is Mick is paid an awful lot of money to get this stuff right and he should be able to spot an under performing player long before us fans. I never wanted MM at Portman Road and when I watch him select players like Gerken, Tabb and Douglas when most of us in the stands can see better options available it does create a feeling of frustration

jpring89 added 08:48 - Apr 9
So fans pay the wages and are not aloud to voice their frustration at a player being consistantly sh1te. Any manager with any bottle would do the right thing and sub him but mick would rather sub pringle. Im sure most professions follow the same MM blueprint of out with the good and in with the crap.

BlueKush added 08:52 - Apr 9
You subbed him at half time against Rotherham...

It's not his fault you're picking him ahead of a handful of better players...

Everyone is entitled to an opinion but for me booing individual players on the pitch in an absolute disgrace. No excuse for it. Some people have it in for Mick on a personal level as well. Too many modern day football fans who think everyone should play tiki taka football and get promoted and it'll all be happy days. Mick has been our best manager since Royle and arguably inherited the worst ever Ipswich town squad. If he left and the current spending situation remained the same, we would only go one way and that isn't promotion. During a manager's time at a club, results are going to go through good and bad spells. Think the frustration of the fans stems from being in the same league for so long, but switching the manager doesn't guarantee progression.
