On another note, to all those who remember Hyam breaking Alan Judge's leg. I told you all at the time Alan Judge wasn't wearing shin pads and got abuse that all players must wear shin pads. It's the rules. Please watch Gaston Rameirez on the football league show. Clearly not wearing shin pads. Alan Judge wasn't wearing shin pads either. So not all rules are followed and Judge only had himself to blame.

Both were wearing shinpads. Not huge ones i'll agree, but they were.

Firstly, it's not "rules", they are called The Laws of the Game.

secondly, the LotG states:
"The basic compulsory equipment of a player comprises the following separate items:
• a jersey or shirt with sleeves — if undergarments are worn, the colour of the
sleeve must be the same main colour as the sleeve of the jersey or shirt
• shorts — if undershorts or tights are worn, they must be of the same main
colour as the shorts
• stockings — if tape or similar material is applied externally it must be the
same colour as that part of the stocking it is applied to
• shinguards
• footwear"

The wording between shin 'pads' and shin 'guards' doesn't leave a lot to be desired, however it is compulsory that all individuals that play the game have to have some sort of protection.

What this doesn't exclude is the issue of Hyams tackle - even if the guy had been wearing concrete shin 'guards' it still would have broken his leg. If a train hit a car on a level crossing and killed the train driver, there wouldn't be an inquest into the capabilities of protection around the driving cab - they'd be an inquest in why the car was on the crossing in the first place.

I know for a fact Judge wasn't wearing either shin pads or guards. I'm not trying to defend Hyams tackle. We clearly have differing opinions on that. But pls don't tell me I'm wrong when I am not. If you were part of the team that treated Judge then you would know.

Trouble is, all these accessories now have one thing in common. They are all 'pink and fluffy' fashion items, and have nothing to do with safety. Just look at the state of the rubbish boots they wear and the increasing foot and toe injuries. It's all in the name of sponsor deals and inflated egos imo.

Good stuff this from Douglas. Not a great challenge, but there was clearly no intent and nowhere near as bad as the Hyam challenge, who didn't handle himself as well as Douglas has.

Yes because a tricky winger who is likely to get kicked a few times each game wouldn't wear any form of shin pads.....!

For a long time footballers with these tiny little shin pads has been one of my gripes with the game. They give little or no protection and all because it's probably "unfasionable" to be seen with a bigger guards. I know it's nowhere near the same level of football but I never go on the pitch without a decent shinguard with ankle protection. I'm sure this would this would help stop some injuries we see made law. Just my thoughts.

Saw it last night and it looked like a player going in to prevent an opponent shooting , happens every game

No reaction from the Derby players, so the only one trying to make something out of it is their so called manager

Bluemachines and others.... i am interested to know how you know for a fact that judge wasnt wearing shin pads? When i go back to highlights of game and pause it as 18 secs ( need to zoom in for this) i believe i can see a shin pad under the sock, all be it a flimsy one but its there.

Judge genuinely wasn't wearing any shin pads, people that treated him have said that he was wearing shoe insoles under his socks to give the appearance of protection and Ramirez yesterday clearly wasn't wearing any at all which would have prevented him getting that nasty gash. For the record I genuinely cannot see how either tackle is a red card, just an unfortunate outcome both went for the ball, both won the ball.

What are you on about!? Every player wears shin pads, it is in the laws of the game!! They may be short one, but they still MUST wear them. I'm a referee, i would know...

Thank you Simonds92. Judge was wearing rolled up shoe insoles. Not shin pads or shin guards. They are the facts, whether or not they follow the rules. It is a sad fact that they shin pads are viewed as uncool amongst footballers.

Dissboy. Maybe the clue to how I know is in my previous post where I mentioned treating Judge.

The referee has to do checks before the game on all the players equipment. If there's anything wrong with it then the player has to change it or the ref can stop them from playing as it is their neck on the line. This is the same issue with a frozen over pitch, if a player gets injured due to illegal playing equipment/ unsafe conditions then the ref will be suspended from their job so these two players must have been wearing legal shin wear.

You can't blame the two guys for getting injured it's a case of two players going at their job passionately and sometimes these things happen. The people at fault are the people who commit the fouls but even then after the incident is over it should be over its football there's no need to argue about it!

I wish any footballer who is injured the very best in recovery. No matter the circumstances of their injury

Harry. How clear can I make it. Despite the rules Judge wasn't wearing appropriate protection. I understand the rules and all the checks that should've happened but the FACT remains the guy wasn't wearing shin pads or guards. He was wearing rolled up shoe insoles.

Did you personally inspect the inside of his football socks?!?!?!

The fact is if he wasn't wearing shin pads he wouldn't be on the pitch!

If you watch the incident back there is clearly some kind of shin protection on. Whether you think they're insoles or whatever it doesn't make it his fault that his leg broke. It's a risk that every player makes going into a tackle these things happen

Please see previous post Harry. I didn't inspect the guys socks but as part of the treatment you need to understand how the injury occurred. And he wasn't wearing shin pads or guards.

If I was a professional footballer I hope I would have the sense to wear something that is designed to protect my most valuable asset.

Equally players can't wear metal plated full leg casts to protect them from injury, shin pads in their very nature conservation only protect a small area and even if you get a full on tackle on your shin pads you will still get injured if both of the challenges in question occur. It's not the fault of the players in my opinion, not the tacklers who go for the ball and not the injured guys who equally meant to get the ball.

Whatever they were wearing was legal so if someone is at fault for this it'd be the fa but other than a couple ofrom you guys no one is kicking up a fuss so these things happen.

When i played many years ago i saw some players in local leagues using copies of Readers Digest as pads. They were nearly 1/2" thick.

The fact you think wearing shin pads would have made the slightest bit of difference highlights your medical knowledge! They might help protect from scrapes and minor bruises but NOT a broken leg!
