Feeney Won't Be Joining Town
Monday, 13th Jun 2016 17:27

TWTD understands that former loanee Liam Feeney will not now be joining Town on a permanent basis.

The 29-year-old was understood to have agreed terms with the Blues despite interest from Birmingham City and others and was set to sign once his current contract with Bolton Wanderers is up at the end of the month.

However, the winger has subsequently received a more lucrative offer from another club, believed to be Blackburn Rovers, where he was previously on loan in 2014.

Feeney joined Town on loan in March and made seven starts and two sub appearances, scoring once.

Speaking on the final day of the season, manager Mick McCarthy confirmed he was keen to sign the former Millwall man on a permanent basis.

“We’re talking to him and we’re talking to his agent,” he said. “I’d like him to stay and he would like to stay and if we can come to a mutually beneficial deal then that’s what will happen. If we don’t, then we won’t.”

McCarthy said in May that adding wide players to his squad is a priority this summer: “The wide areas are an issue for us. We have lost Tabby [Jay Tabb], Ainsley [Maitland-Niles] has gone back to Arsenal and obviously Ryan [Fraser] is back with Bournemouth so we need to look at that.

“Goals from midfield have been a problem for us over the last two or three years but we looked to have got on top of that with Ryan, who certainly contributed in that area. He was a real loss for us.”

Money talks I suppose,oh well never mind.We don't need mercenaries who just want to be here for the money.Sure MM has other irons in the fire.!! Never really rated Feeney anyway, was not any better than what we already have.

neil1968 and others, he was so poor that's why he walked all over us when we played Bolton away.
Such an average player, looked at our team lately.

........ strange how players are rated as almost 'world class' when they join us - and rated as virtual crap when they don't.
Seem to remember many good things being said about Feeney a few short weeks back.

Fact is, we can't / won't pay the going rate to get promoted - therefore we won't. Simple as that.

More of the same next season is my prediction.

Shame but his loss. Had a pace & directness but often let down by his final ball. Not worth playing over the top wages for someone who IMHO would not start for us if Murphy, Sears, McGoldrick & Bishop are all fit. No doubt those who moaned when we tried to sign him saying he wasn't good enough will now be moaning we aren't being ambitious enough to offer him more, can't please some people. I'm not bothered & we move on

Surco72, keep quoting that stat, it's time that some people realise that however much they think we are a big go ahead club we are just a mid table plodding club. Why would he want to move here, if he is settled in the area why would he move house. If we were an ambitious club we would break the FFP rules and go for it but we are not.

Turns down the longest serving Championship club to join a team "going nowhere".

Priceless.

Same Owner, Same Manager = Same old .......... !!!

Don't expect more - if you do, you'll be expecting far too much, and living in 'cloud cuckoo land'.

blueboy1981 - 'More of the same next season is my prediction' Mine too, if we're referring to your overuse of punctuation and patronising comments.

Blueboy1981... not easy granted but they are about... Sears for example or another Ryan Fraser/ johnny Williams. The mere fact that he agreed to sign, then accepts another deal says so much. as i said not worth paying ott for.

Its a well known fact i am not a MM fan, probably never will be. That said its close season lets just wait and see what players come in the door. No good thinking too hard or long on this one!

All those saying Feeney wasn't great on loan and that it's no real loss are prob just saying this because he is joining Blackburn. Location wise it will suit, despite supposedly wanting to return south. All these comments about there being better players out there, who exactly?? We haven't been able to sign Feeney on a free, who in my eyes did pretty well whilst on loan with us. Blackburn have just come out of an embargo, but are able to offer better terms.

Haha Absolutely not bothered. Another mercenary just looking for the highest payer. Not the attitude we want at ITFC. Young, hungry and wants to wear the shirt is what we need. Plenty of better options available!

Save the money which would have contributed to his wages and add them to someone else who is more like Fraser. Simple - well in theory anyway

tbh Feeney wasn't all that good. I'm not particularly worried that he's gone elsewhere. Better (younger) players about than Feeney.

Move on........

Do we have any pacey wingers in the reserves (u-21s)?

Enjoy Blackburn QPR Fulham or whatever money bags club you are going to join and do very little for.

Realistically you won't get a better chance of promotion / playing in the prem league than us Feeney however you may make more £££££ elsewhere.

I for one am happy we have the likes of Mick signing players, offering reasonable wages and not being held at gunpoint by very very average players. We need players with the right mentality to join us, onto the next. Bullet dodged.

Kirbmeister ......... you obviously understand the 'same old'. Just continue being the eternal optimist against the odds.

............ is sometimes BLISS.

Dissboyitfc ............ we'll see.

Everyone on here would have been raving over Feeney - had he signed - now the majority on here have denounced him as nothing.

Quite pathetic really - and certainly nothing for a 'true blue' to be proud of.
How's that Kerbmeister ... ??

Signs of a few deluded souls already.

The comments about loyalty and greed make me laugh. As others have said on here, if you were 29 year old footballer possibly signing your last professional contract what would you choose? If he did sign for us and we got promoted (bear with me folks) what do you think might happen when his contract expires in the Premiership? Yep, you got it, where's the loyalty from the club then?

We move one, it's still early days, Mick's acknowledged that we need some decent wingers.

Mick probably thought he showed promise and if he could turn that promise into consistently good performances then he was worth a punt. Don't blame him for taking more money elsewhere, just like Lee Martin did. I think he will go on t achieve nothing elsewhere without the stewardship of Mick and terry

Totally agree, we haven't lost Tabby, we let him go because he didn't play (virtually) all season despite being fit.

And no problem with Feeney making the choice that is best for him, why would he not? He was only here on loan. Anyway, IMO he is not a player who would significantly contribute towards defining our next season.
