Feeney Won't Be Joining Town
Monday, 13th Jun 2016 17:27

TWTD understands that former loanee Liam Feeney will not now be joining Town on a permanent basis.

The 29-year-old was understood to have agreed terms with the Blues despite interest from Birmingham City and others and was set to sign once his current contract with Bolton Wanderers is up at the end of the month.

However, the winger has subsequently received a more lucrative offer from another club, believed to be Blackburn Rovers, where he was previously on loan in 2014.

Feeney joined Town on loan in March and made seven starts and two sub appearances, scoring once.

Speaking on the final day of the season, manager Mick McCarthy confirmed he was keen to sign the former Millwall man on a permanent basis.

“We’re talking to him and we’re talking to his agent,” he said. “I’d like him to stay and he would like to stay and if we can come to a mutually beneficial deal then that’s what will happen. If we don’t, then we won’t.”

McCarthy said in May that adding wide players to his squad is a priority this summer: “The wide areas are an issue for us. We have lost Tabby [Jay Tabb], Ainsley [Maitland-Niles] has gone back to Arsenal and obviously Ryan [Fraser] is back with Bournemouth so we need to look at that.

“Goals from midfield have been a problem for us over the last two or three years but we looked to have got on top of that with Ryan, who certainly contributed in that area. He was a real loss for us.”

Jersey blue: he HAS joined a club with a chance of the playoffs and turned down a club that is going nowhere

He did play quite well for us and his delivery from the wings was his most memorable attribute. I am sad to see him play for a promotion rival (if he signs for Blackburn). Rumours that Foley is in Huddersfield.

Hope we don't end up with the crumbs yet again. We've released a lot of players already but we have not been busy with replacements.

He's a quality player and we have missed out for reasons unknown (wages?). We usually sell one player for a few million every year so maybe there are financial constraints that we are all unaware of. I don't have high hopes for next season, think we will be aiming to make mid-table.
Blackburn are simply willing to pay higher wages and so are a number of other teams in this division.

Perhaps we have a young Left winger / forward who has just proved himself playing in a tournament winning side who Mick considers worth a chance instead?

I've seen Pattersen a few times last season syntaxerror. He's worth a shot and you may be right; as a back-up player he could do a reasonable job. Still really in recovery from his broken leg but seems to be getting better and better.

We really need to give these youngsters a chance next season, rather than Coke and company.

As i said earlier not a MM fan. But at this stage of the close season i am not going to moan or be negative about losing this player.

A new season coming, will it be any different, maybe, maybe not but the club will be aware of how the fans are feeling, all we can do for now is watch this space!

Some saying "he was crap anyway" others "shows how bad we are missing out on players like this" - reality is that he was/is a decent player hut not really good enough to break the bank for (in the way say a Fraser or fit Jonny Williams would be).
Move on & sign more young hungry players like Webster and/or promote from Acadamy AND only "break the bank" for real quality in positions we need ...... wide, RB, ACM & possibly a new 20+ goal striker (sorry think Murphs has just gone over the top of his metaphorical hill & is now on way down ....... in the future I think he should be used more as an "impact"/option from the bench than main striker ...... sorry ☹ )

He looked a half decent player but at 29 he is not going to get any better, at his age not a worth 3 year contract. I would much rather us go for someone from the lower leagues who are young and hungry.

Fair play to him, I'd do the same. Even as an Ipswich fan, I'd turn the club down for better money elsewhere. It's a short career, and you need to make as much as you can, while you can. Someone described him as a 'contractor', which essentially is what he is. When his 'service agreement' with Ipswich Town comes to an end, he is free to negotiate a better deal with an alternative company. Likewise, the people who have the ground-care contracts at ITFC are free to do the same.

I am happy he's not coming!
I didn't rate him and would prefer we went for younger hungrier players who can still improve

Blackburn have been badly run for years, so the fact that they want him should tell us we shouldn't!!

Not good enough, obviously Blackburn have no ambition, I am sure we will do better than Mr Feeney!

To be honest, I would have been more disappointing if he had signed!

@ itfccymru (the first post) - have to disagree he made a difference when he came on 2nd half against Rotherham and that really didn't take a lot of doing as the game was flat as a pancake with no width what so ever, after that he was ok but nothing outstanding.
Overall not to bothered he's not joining, ok probably a good squad player but fancy we need more quality out wide than what he was producing IF we are to make a genuine attempt at getting up. Worrying about our financial side to attract players here though.

Honestly could not care less about this one.
Average at best.

We need younger hungrier players, not journeymen who care more about their pay packet.

Such is life, lets move on. Cant blame him for going to someone willing to pay more for his services. He proved at Bolton he can't make a difference so bye bye.

Not the end of the world, did think he did add something on the wing but it's not to be so need move on!! Think we need to look at a couple of younger additions on the wings, maybe harriott & Lookman from Charlton & Fraser for another season loan, a big MAYBE on that one but would be great it if happened.👍🏻

Still hope that the younger players from the Academy will be given more game time, with one or possibly two marquee signings;but the Evans/McCarthy past history on transfers do not make me too confident that this will happen unfortunately.
