Town Scouts at Euros
Saturday, 18th Jun 2016 11:45

TWTD understands Town have sent scouts to run the rule over players at Euro 2016 in France.

While members of the competition’s top squads such as Italy, Spain, Germany and hosts France will be well beyond the Blues’ budget, the likes of director of football Dave Bowman and Ian 'Taff' Evans are likely to be eyeing those in action for the smaller nations.

Some of the players at the tournament with teams such as Iceland, Albania, Hungary, Slovakia, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland would be more affordable to Town and other Championship clubs.

This is good news I've been very impressed by almost every team at the euros and there could be some hidden gems in there at our price!

That sounds like a great jolly. Surely we already know of all these players, as does everyone else.

I think we could make more use of the European market, as only Knudsen springs to mind in terms of recent players we have brought to the UK from clubs outside the British Isles (aside from Bru and Bajner who came here for trials).

Ian 'Taff' Evans - Must have been gutted the other day !

We might unearth the next Amir Karic - 'the best left foot at the Euros' - George Burley

Where is he now

Or I always remember Podborsky in '96 - Utd took him and never really did it

You never know - we may find a gem !

Nothing against us looking, because you never know, but it's worth pointing out that there's an accepted school of thought that basing decisions on players solely on their performance at international tournaments is ill-advised due to the small sample size.

Do you know if we send scouts to the various under age competitions (is the under 17s, 21s etc). Whilst perhaps riskier I suspect some gems could still be found there.

If you want the worst signing to be made based on a showing at a major tournament then surely Salif Diao to Liverpool?

I also think it's fair to say we may not be aware of all the players in say, Albania, Iceland, Hungary etc squads.

Re Amir Karic, now 42 and retiree after town he went on to perform a grand tour of northern Europe's clubs most notably at Maribor from whom we signed him in the first place, after that he appears to have rocked up at various clubs a lot of us have probably never heard of.

Stop the teasing Town....who was the last scout we had overseas? Lovely little jolly of course it is...

I quite like venturing into an expensive shop, having a mooch about, then walking out again..

Kleberson at Man Utd. Classic case of "be careful what you wish for" if your wish is for a Brazilian world cup winner.

Remember John Jensen? Arsenal bought him after his brilliant strike to win the Euro final for Denmark in 1992. Took him 98 games to score his only goal for the Gooners. Ouch.

May be people forget about Bobby Robson at a very similar tournament when a certain Brian Hamilton was noticed.
