McCarthy: Brown's Chelsea Exit Frustrating But Nothing We Can Do Monday, 11th Jul 2016 06:00
Town boss Mick McCarthy admits it’s frustrating to lose young players, such as 16-year-old striker Charlie Brown, who TWTD revealed over the weekend has joined Chelsea, but says there’s nothing that can be done if the big clubs show an interest.
“It’s always frustrating to lose them at whatever age, at whatever stage they’re at you don’t want to lose them,” McCarthy said.
“It’s just one of those things, you can’t do anything about it. You have to just make the best deal you can, and I’m sure that’s what [owner] Marcus [Evans] will do.”
With Arsenal and Crystal Palace also having shown interest, Town are expected to receive compensation of around £500,000 for Brown with a tribunal setting the figure if the clubs are unable to come to an agreement.
McCarthy added: “I don’t get involved in anything to do with that. You try and do the best deal you can. If they’re going to take them, it’s a fait accompli, you can’t do anything about it.”
A former Felixstowe Academy pupil, Brown broke into the U21s squad last season and was due to start as a full-time scholar at Playford Road this summer having joined the Blues as an U10.

Sounds like a loss - 16 year old in the U21's The decision will be all about money I suspect- big wodge to him and his family to sign on for Chelsea. Lets hope we get some add ons in the deal based on first team performance and sell ons Good Luck to him, lets hope he has a good family around him to support what is going to be a big change and tough life for a 16 year old-
Any such settlement can go towards the failed judgement against the policing costs, which has proved to be yet another unwise venture by the Evans Regime. That probably runs into hundreds of thousands.
Let the Club SERIOUSLY go for Academy Cat 1 - and reclaim the ambition the Club once had in abundance, in doing so we would stand a very good chance of hanging on to such potentially good players.
If we don't - this will continue to happen, as we continue to be pretenders Which is all we currently are - like it, or not - deluded, or not. Good Luck to the lad - no brainer for him, to be honest.
Far lesser Clubs than us in today's game - with far more ambition. Sad to say, but true.
....... and anyway, if he stayed here his options would have more than likely been to have played out of position - or moved on and out. Maybe he wasn't impressed with 'hoofball' - prerequisite that, at this Club, under this regime.
Seems quite a lot of dosh for this young lad;but I am sure Mr Evans will try and get as much as possible.Thought I read that we only got about £!00k when Harry Clarke went to Arsenal, and I didn't see any amount mentioned when Sam Ford went to West Ham after a trial last February;but perhaps the circumstances are different.
Allegedly a 3 year contract worth 600k. There is no way Town can afford to pay 4K a week to a 16year old who may never make it. It means the super rich clubs will always steal the raw talent..
There needs to be a limit on the number of players you can have on your books and how many you can loan out. The system as it is doesn't work for the players or their parent clubs. At the same time we benefit from lower league sides, and we should acknowledge that.
