Town Eyeing Palace Winger Kaikai
Sunday, 31st Jul 2016 20:22

Loan interest in Crystal Palace winger Sullay Kaikai is understood to have been the reason Blues boss Mick McCarthy took in the Eagles’ 3-2 friendly victory at AFC Wimbledon on Wednesday.

The Blues are keen to bring the 20-year-old to Portman Road with the squad still short of wide players ahead of Saturday’s Championship opener against Barnsley.

Southwark-born Kaikai came through the youth system at Selhurst Park having joined the club as a 14-year-old.

The 5ft 11½ tall winger has so far made two sub appearances for the Eagles, one in the league, scoring a goal in the last minute of his debut, a 3-2 Capital One Cup defeat to Newcastle United.

Kaikai, who plays primarily on the right but can also operate on the left and in a central role, spent the second half of 2013/14 on loan at Crawley, making two starts and three sub appearances for the then-League One side.

The wideman, whose parents hail from Sierra Leone, spent the following season with Cambridge United in League Two and made 14 starts and 16 sub appearances, scoring six goals.

Last season Kaikai had two spells on loan with Shrewsbury in League One and made 25 starts and four appearances from the bench, scoring 12 times.

TWTD understands the Blues currently have ongoing moves for two players with one deal not too far from being done.

Speaking after Saturday’s final friendly against Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, manager Mick McCarthy said he was confident of adding to his squad before Barnsley's visit: “I’m hopeful we’ll have somebody in before Saturday.”

Town have been targeting wingers all summer but so far with little success. Former loanee Liam Feeney joined Blackburn after the Lancastrians offered the 29-year-old a significantly better contract, while we understand the Blues were subsequently unable to agree personal terms with Rovers winger Elliott Bennett, despite the clubs having settled on a fee.

This sounds promising, fingers crossed we can get him on board before Saturday. It's definitely a position we need to strengthen so no complaints whatsoever if we can get him through the door. I have to say I haven't ever seen him play but he sounds an exciting prospect and worth taking a punt on. AMN started brightly last season but then went off the boil and his mum didn't really help matters either!
Mick has his detractors (me included) but in no way whatsoever do I want to see us fail just to get him out of the door. If he does the business this season then fair play to the man. Some of us are just frustrated with the style of play and lack of signings. However, if we can get some exciting new recruits in and they do the business on the pitch then it will go a long way to appeasing the fans. And if they turn over Norwich, then I'm a 100% overnight convert! :-)
Felt sour yesterday after the poor friendly result yesterday but come 3pm Saturday, it won't count for jack and we'd all gladly swap a friendly reverse for 3 points on the board come 5pm on Saturday!
Blue Army!

Trouble is that penguin blue is correct. Our defence isn't good enough and MM made it his priority at start of his tenure. While the majority of fans can see it he can't so while we may be getting some attacking options the defence will cost us if the same four trot out every Saturday!
We need a balanced side that want to play as a team for Ipswich, not relying on loans to plug the gaps.

He could be the next Sixto Peralta, Dos Santos, Johnny W or Ryan Fraser!
Feel like its going to be a busy week coming at Ipswich.

Really hope he gets given a chance if we do sign him rather than just being a bit piece player from the bench. I know he's young and inexperienced but he looks like he has talent so throw him in and see what he can do. Give the lad a chance, if after a few games he isn't producing the goods, then of course we'd need to look to ease him in from the bench. But I'd be tempted to throw him in at the deep end from the word go. Let him get out there and express himself. As they say, sink or swim!
I hope he's allowed off his leash and given licence to thrill and not just given an occasional cup game to blow off the cobwebs!
GET HIM IN, AND LET HIM DO HIS STUFF!!!

This is very promising indeed. Lets hope that all three players are going to be permanent ones and agree to come here.

Well no, Pilgrim. Penguin's post was almost entirely contradictory.

He moans about a one dimensional midfield and also the concept of signing new wingers.

It doesn't begin to make sense.

He begins to complain about sorting the defense, possibly remembers Webster so as an afterthought decides it's the fullbacks rather the defense per se.

He also whines about hoofing whilst complaining about signing wingers.

Then you agree with him.

Lamah and Kaikai would both be positive signings.

We have a strong goalkeeping duo, an improved defence, an altered midfield selection with youngsters coming through and a few good strikers in attack. With these two I feel we will do ok this season, but let the doom-mongerers minus me.

This lad sounds much more like the sort of player we should be targeting, but as a permanent signing not another loan. Pacey, full of tricks, likes to take his man on and knows where the back of the net is. 20 years old with a couple of years experience playing league football.

He's almost certainly not the finished article, and might not be able to turn it on week in week out, but with the right training and management he could really mature into a decent player. All the while he is out on loan at various clubs though will he really nuckle down and give it 100%?

Is this an indication of how money in the Premier League is killing football? This guy obviously can't make enough of an impression at Palace to be given a chance there... so why don't they just offload him? Is it because he would rather take their over inflated wages than get himself a new club? Just a thought.

Looks a good signing - a player who excelled in League 1 last season and now should be ready to make an impact in the Championship :-)
