McCarthy Confirms Grant Signing, No Deal for Lamah and Trio Made Available
Thursday, 4th Aug 2016 14:12

Town boss Mick McCarthy has confirmed that, as revealed by TWTD earlier this afternoon, Everton midfielder Conor Grant is joining the Blues on a season-long loan, while trialist Roland Lamah has not been offered terms and Cameron Stewart, Piotr Malarczyk and Giles Coke are also available for transfer or loan.

“He’s had league experience with Doncaster last year, he was flying,” McCarthy said of 21-year-old Grant, who trained with his new team-mates this morning. “We were having him watched and he was doing really well, as were Doncaster.

“It coincided with him going back to Everton through injury that Doncaster had a bit of a slide.

“He’s a left-sider, gives us a bit of balance. He’s more of a left-sided midfield player than a tricky, flying winger.

“But he’s very talented, a wand of a left foot and he’s impressed everyone this morning with his freekicks and corners. He’ll be a good signing for us.”

Grant, who recently signed a new two-year contract with Everton, will wear the number 28 shirt while with the Blues.

Regarding trialist Lamah, who played in the friendlies against Charlton and Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, McCarthy added: “Roland’s not coming, Roland had other options, to be fair, and I think he’s exercising those options, to be quite honest.”

The Blues boss says the additions of Grant Ward and Conor Grant will be the extent of his business for the moment at least with no other signings imminent.

“Not before the weekend and I’m certainly not as anxious to get anybody now because we’ve just signed two of them," he said.

"It is before Saturday. We’ll see. Let’s see how we start, then we’ll decide.”

As TWTD reported on Sunday, McCarthy has been keeping his eye on Crystal Palace wideman Sullay Kaikai, but refused to be drawn on his interest: “There’s loads of names get mentioned.”

As for exits, the Town boss said: “Cameron Stewart’s still available, he’s available for loan or for transfer. He’s had a decent pre-season but he’s in his third season, the last year of his contract.

“Conor Grant’s come in, Grant Ward can play on that side as well, so can Freddie Sears, so he’s down the pecking order in that respect, so I think it’s better than he moves on.

"Piotr Malarczyk too, Giles Coke when he’s fit because he’s been missing and he’s behind a few good players now that are all in front of him.

“If I can get some who are not looking like they’re going to play out on loan or transfer them that would be great. Hopefully that happens.”

Odd one about Stewart after his pre-season. Thought Mick would at least give him a month or so in and around the first team to see what he could bring.

Good news about the signings but I would have loved to see Kaikai brought in. A really tricky winger who would provide the quality that our strikers have been missing.

I like the sales patter.......big up Stewart's lazarus style of comeback, then shock horror, he's for sale!

I hope MM gives the young wingers a good run.

Kaikai might still be brought in!

You can't read what manager's say too seriously, he's not going to come out and say that he's desperately trying to sign a winger because then other teams would put their prices up for players knowing we have to sign someone.

Good we have signed Ward and Grant this week, think that's what all fans wanted! Would be very surprised to see both new signings start this week given their lack of pre season! But would hope both are in the squad.

COYB!

I bet we still get the Palace player in cos the Everton Loanees is "more left side of midfield than" ....winger. The listing of Stewart is another sign that we are still in for palace player.

looks like Grant was always on the radar so not a knee here reaction.

Anyone on here still doubting MM credentials to manage this Club need to wake up and see how his team is developing.

Well done Mick, the squad's looking much more balanced now than it did 3 days ago

The transfer window is open for another 3 weeks, so hopefully there's one or two more additions before it closes. Kaikai could still be one of those...

I really don't understand what is going on with Mick and Stewart!!

From what Mick has been saying all summer about him impressing and all that, what was the real point of saying all that BS if he is still not in his plans?!

Please to welcome Conor but very disappointed about Cameron Stewart, I think he deserves a chance at PR. Hopefully Kaikai is still a possibility as he looks a fantastic prospect. COYB!

I think MM bigging up Stewart was a smoke screen for what he was really doing in the transfer market. Mick is no one's fool.

As for KaiKai, I would too love it if we brought him in having heard really good things about him, but after him scoring two goals the other day for Palace - including a stunning freekick - and impressing Pardew and the fans, I think it would be a miraculous punt.
Also, after signing two wingers now and Searsy playing on the flank most of last season, with Bishop favoured to play on the wing possibly next season, I (sadly) can't see it happening.

Pleased to get Conor Grant come in on loan. As was mentioned earlier i just hope that this sees Freddie Sears put back in his best position for the coming season - as a striker. We're definitely in for a much different season too last. Young, pacy, hungry players coming in with some of our own home grown players added to the squad. Hopefully it will give us that boost we need to mount a play-off push.

On a side note, sad to see Cameron Stewart leave as he has had a decent pre-season and with no emergency loan window, could have been adequate cover if called upon.

Time now to get behind the team on saturday and get off to a good start. C'mon you blues!

Having a look on YouTube, this lad looks like he loves to have a pop from distance. More shots from midfield is what we need!

What is so hard for people to understand about Cameron Stewart?

Mick doesn't rate his attitude and was never going to play him, BUT as we had no other wingers in the squad and there's never any guarantee you'd land your targets, he has talked Stewart up in a bid to build his confidence and get him playing well just in case.

I like this... TWTD reveals the news earlier this afternoon and now confirms the signing... and he's already trained with the team this morning. Managed to keep that one pretty quiet.
Nice one. Hope he gives us an extra something, in the same way Fraser did last season.

There is clearly a problem with McCarthy as far as Stewart is concerned whether it be on the pitch or behind the scenes. At the end of the day he was not a regular at Doncaster and did not figure on the pitch at AFC Sudbury this week when he was on the bench so for me the writing was on the wall. Great news that we have freshened up the squad and certainly agree with the decision to let Coke and Malarczyk find pastures new. Could never understand the Coke signing in the first place. Could take a while for the new lads to bed in initially but nice to have some positive news and hope MM gets his team selection right on Saturday i.e. play Sears or Pitman up top and not out wide. I won't hold my breath though.

Personally, I'd have been happy to see Lamah and Foley with us this season. Nobody is going to sign or loan Coke but we might offload Malarcyk. Stewart will probably be out on loan now.

Stewart has woken up and realised he's got to work hard to stay in the game at a decent level. Had we kept him, do you think he would have signed a new contract next summer? Unlikely.
More likely is he'd go on a free and we would have paid wages all season long.
Better he goes now and we free up some money.
He's got promise and he look good in pre-season but you could see an issue down the line.

Looking more promising for next season as long as its not the pairing of Douglas/Skuse in the middle.

After a summer of trepidation I am a little optimistic now... roll on Saturday, come on the mighty blues.

Shame about Stewart who looks like he could be the player we hoped for based on pre season but I suspect on a fair whack. None the less hoped to see him start at the weekend or at leat make the bench.

Pleased with Grant though who o think is a good prospect. Be great to have him perm come the end of the.loan
