Leon Best Starts for Town U23s
Monday, 22nd Aug 2016 12:53

Free agent former Ireland international striker Leon Best is on trial with the Blues and starts for Town’s U23s in this afternoon’s first home game of the season against Birmingham at Playford Road (KO 1pm).

The 29-year-old was with Rotherham last season and scored against the Blues in the Millers' 1-0 victory at Portman Road in March.

Much-travelled Best, who was released by the South Yorkshire club at the end of 2015/16, was recently in talks with League One Port Vale but the League One club confirmed that the deal had broken down at the end of last week.

Prior to his time with the Millers, Best spent time with Notts County as a youngster before moving to Southampton's youth set-up from the Magpies like David McGoldrick.

The pair were both in the Saints U18s side the Blues defeated in the 2005 FA Youth Cup final.

Best, who is 6ft 1in tall, subsequently moved on to QPR (loan), Sheffield Wednesday (three loans), Yeovil (loan), Bournemouth (loan), Coventry, Newcastle, Blackburn, Derby (loan) and Brighton (loan) before joining Rotherham in November 2015. Last season he scored four goals in 10 starts and six sub appearances.

The Nottingham-born frontman has won seven full Ireland caps in addition to making appearances at U17, U19 and U21 levels.

Speaking on talkSPORT earlier today, manager Mick McCarthy, who is at this afternoon's game with assistant Terry Connor, said he has adding a couple of players in his sights before the transfer window closes at the end of the month, who would be loanees or out of contract players.

U23s: Crowe, Emmanuel, Kenlock, Blanchfield Digby, T Smith, Varney, McDonnell, Best, Dozzell, McLoughlin. Subs: Robinson, Marsden, C Smith, Patterson, Morris.

We don't need more strikers, well certainly not any who aren't better than what we have. Varney was brought in last week to fill the void of Mcgoldrick injury.

Wide players is what we are desperately short of, Sears wasted out wide but we play him there because we haven't got anyone else!

We don't need numbers we need quality first team starters in the positions we are lacking quality!

Wolves signing Rhodes we get Varney and looking at Best two strikers who don't score goals , spend some money Town on a proven striker

RYITFC, spot on, the match yesterday just proves your point, Norwich had players out on the wings who were regularly fed the ball to gallop down to put a cross into the box. As for Town, most of the game we had no players out on the wings leaving this space empty as they were all huddles in the middle of the park

Past his best but still best we can hope to sign.

Let's right him off before he kicks a ball shall we FFS, MM & TC have an excellent track record with taking other teams cast offs and free transfers and getting them going.... chill out :)

We do need a striker, but preferably one who can find the net! Completely underwhelmed with most of our signings this season! Marcus Evans is totally to blame for the fans lack of enthusiasm, as witnessed by the gate yesterday. Until we spend some serious money or we get a manager that can take us further, I am afraid the future looks bleak!

Effectively 13 clubs by the age of 29 - never a good sign for a player to have moved around that much.

Average goal scoring record and a poor personal/disciplinary record. Must be the best option we have! Always hardest position to buy for, so let's hope we get another gem on a free (deeply sceptical at this stage though)

Ry - completely disagree.

Sears hasn't scored in 31 and offered naff all yday.
Murphy needs a rest he was dead on 60
McGoldrick out again ( surprise surprise )
Varney not the answer and will only be sub
Pitman - yes he's good but not yet fit

We're crying out for a striker, someone good wide left to play in the 4-3-3 and an upgrade middle of the park I M O

Not a bad option to have on the bench.

Other than Murphy we have no strikers that suit the system MM wants to play. Best can operate as that lone striker. He's been at a few good Championship clubs and none have kept him on. Make what you will of that? Worth a punt on a free though.

More clubs than Jack Nicholas

Laughable comments above, we are NOT going to spend £5m on a player whilst e are in the Championship. Get over it and have less stress in your life.

Highly likely that the deal offered would be short term until January, what's to lose?Unlikely to be be big salary so surely worth a punt if MM & TC think he has something to offer.

If he can play wide left in a front 3 I'd take him. Sears is very out of sorts here, not making angles not making intelligent runs at all. Hid when him and Bishop were in a 2 v 3 situation at Wolves.

itsonlyme - do you go to games? Underwhelmed by the 3. Ward looks different class and Webster looks like he's adding balance to the defence. Jesus christ.

StuartBrett8 whilst I agree that it's unfair to write a player off before he even kicks a ball in earnest some of MM trialists that signed ain't been that great. Bajner wasn't up to it, Coke has all but evaporated and is seeing out his remaining days keeping McGoldrick company, and Toure was a loveable buffoon who likes a tweet so I can understand alarm bells ringing with this one.

Once upon a time he was highly rated so there must be a very good player lurking inside of him. But Frank Nouble was once highly rated as well and he is still the biggest donkey I have seen in a Town shirt — so who knows what we will be signing.

Surly there must be better and younger player playing in the second tier of Belgian, or Swedish or Croatian football.

Again - this is about getting a cheap player in - someone who has a point to prove

But being let go from rotherham isn't really where we should be looking.

As for `rhodes - well he gets goals in the championship - With a Big Plus point

He is easily marketable and his resale value still increasing!!

Wolves are making a statement with that

From an Ipswich pov - If Marcus did splash the cash - that would be a no brainer

BtreeBlueBlood don't think he was let go. He failed to agree terms on a new contract.

If we were to sign Leon he would probably be our best striker

Oh dear, Mick. A striker who can score please. Varney and Best are NOT the answer!!
