No More Signings Before Window Closes
Wednesday, 31st Aug 2016 22:01

Town will not be making any further additions to their squad before the transfer window closes at 11pm.

The Blues have spent today primarily trying to negotiate a deal to sign a striker but we understand that having made a seven-figure bid they were unable to come to an agreement regarding a valuation with that player’s current club, who were keen to bring in a signing of their own before allowing the target to move on.

Another potential replacement for Daryl Murphy, who moved on to Newcastle for £3 million at the weekend, became available late this evening but with not enough time remaining to get a deal done.

The Blues will now wait until January before bringing in another striker to compete for a place in the Town attack with yesterday’s signings Leon Best and Tom Lawrence, and Brett Pitman, Freddie Sears, David McGoldrick and Luke Varney.

Previously, the Blues had a £1 million offer turned down by Barnsley for midfielder-turned-striker Marley Watkins, while another versatile attacking player was also on the Blues’ deadline day radar.

Having added Best, who signed a one-year deal with an option for a further campaign, and season-loan loanee Lawrence yesterday, Jonny Williams returning for his fourth loan spell, also for the season, was ultimately the only addition on the final day of the transfer window.

While the exit of a young player on loan was close at one stage, the only exit was Cameron Stewart, whose contract was terminated by mutual consent.

We've done well to be honest, but I feel a striker was all we were crying out for.

I can never understand why clubs wait for the big rush on deadline day! Just get it done early on!! Pathetic..

No disaster, but that's certainly taken the sheen off a promising few additions. Let's hope Leon can rediscover his mojo, and Jonny/Didz come back and stay back!
COYB!!

I'm so sick to death of seeing that donut Ian Milne's smug face promising McCarthy funds to spend after selling one of our best players every single season. Why do we fall for it every time? Taking us for idiots. Murphy was pivotal to us in how we play and needed replacing without fail, even if it meant paying over the odds. Pitman is usually shattered after 50 minutes, Sears seems to have lost the ability to hit a barn door and Best/Varney are hardly going to be prolific. A very frustrating end to a couple of positive signings in Lawrence and Williams. Deflated.

Jan is a even more inflated market than now , so if not prepared to spend now why will Jan be any different ??..Sadly i think the money will now get trousered quietly by the club (ME)..and we will hear the same "issue,s" quoted in Jan by the club..

Happy with MF additions though..!

Oh... That's a shame. Well, Williams is as good as Fraser was and hopefully when fit will be playing alongside mcgoldrick to create a formidable duo to feed Sears and pitman

What a let down that was then...... As it has now transpired, surely it was terrible business to allow Murphy to leave before a replacement had been secured.

Well, I'm personally very disappointed. We sold arguably our best asset and have not replaced him. Yet again the money for a large fee hasn't been reinvested and we will now hear it will be spent in January. When of course, like previous years, it won't. No point making excuses, same things happens time and time again. Marcus Evans failed to do the deals. Unacceptable that we got rid of our best fit striker with no replacement. Unacceptable.

😡Seriously pathetic!! Why sell a player and not replace him! When are Mick and ME going to realise we need to spend money to get out this division! All our rivals are signing players we are more than capable of getting and isn't it worth spending a little money to enable us to get the riches of the premier league

So there we are. But Jonny, Lawrence and Best all useful additions and hopefully Pitman and Freddie will rise to the challenge and thrive on the better quality service the new boys, Grant, Ward and Bish will deliver. We have time to scout for January if required and money to spend then. Don't panic 👍😃

Mins £8m +Murph £3m = £11m
MM spent around £1.5m
Where did the other £10m go Marcus?

Im overall happy with the signing this transfer window but am very frustrated that yet again we have gone on the cheap. Williams and Lawrence are great but they are only loans. Best is just a squad player. We have received over 10million in the last three seasons but have not spent over a million on any single player. If sears and pitman are injured we have no backup and with games becoming more physically challenging we just don't have sufficient QUALITY back up and for that Evans has failed in January it could be too late and the damage may already be done.
