McCarthy Understands Fans' Frustrations Saturday, 1st Oct 2016 18:34 Town boss Mick McCarthy says he fully understands fans’ frustrations following the Blues’ 1-0 home defeat to Huddersfield, his side’s fourth game without a goal. Christopher Schindler’s 58th minute header saw the visitors to the three points.
“It wasn’t a great game in general,” McCarthy said. “We’ve not created much, I don’t think they have. They hit the post when we gave the ball away from a throw-in and we’ve let our guard down from a corner kick and it’s cost us.
“It was a [sloppily conceded corner kick], then having done that the last thing you need to do is concede from it.”
With the Blues now without a goal in four games fans made their feelings clear with boos at the end and ironic chants when Freddie Sears managed a shot on target in the second half.
“I’m not surprised, it happens,” McCarthy added. “We’ve not played as well as we could, as we’d like and I think the crowd are getting frustrated and they’re venting their feelings. I fully understand that.”
How does he feel when he hears fans chanting things like, ‘We’ve had a shot’, as was the case following Sears’s effort, which was claimed easily by Terriers keeper Danny Ward?
“There’s not a great deal you can do about it,” he continued. “I’m doing by job, obviously, to the best of my ability at the moment.
“But if it’s not as good as the crowd think it should be and it’s unacceptable to them, then they’ve all paid their money, if they give us the boos it’s acceptable if they’re not seeing what they want to see, I’ve no complaint about that. I’m not happy about how we played myself.”
Has he known a similar goalless spell elsewhere during his managerial career? “I can’t remember, but I’m sure someone will find out and source it if I have.
“We weren’t very good with the ball in terms of creating chances. We’ve still got creative players on the pitch but we didn’t create any.”
Asked how he would respond to fans’ criticism that he sets his side up negatively, he said: “Anything I would say to that it always appears to be an excuse and I’m not one for excuses.
“If that’s the thoughts that they’ve got and I’m certainly not going to sit in here and explain all my reasons for picking a team that I’ve got. But I’m just not going sit here and justify my selection.”
Part of the selection is down to the lack of fit attacking players? “You didn’t need me to speak about it after all, did you? That’s an excuse for me because we’ve still got talented players on the pitch. So I expect more from the ones that we’ve got on the pitch.”
Does he view the recent spell as a period which needed to be got out of the way before the injured players are available again?
“I sincerely hope so,” he said. “It’s tough at the moment, it always is. It’s easy for people to get in their ear holes and start driving wedges, ‘This is wrong, that’s wrong and everything else is wrong’ and to be fair it isn’t.
“The players are a good bunch of lads and make sure they stick together and keep their chins up and their chests out, they are very proud to be Ipswich players. And there’s only us that can turn it around.”
The Town boss hopes the two-week international break will allow some of those injured players, including Jonny Williams, who will play for the U23s tomorrow against Liverpool at Portman Road, to return to fitness.
“In terms of hoping we get some players back the break’s a good thing. Besty’s gone through his 90 minutes today and he needs to recover.
“Reg [Luke Varney] can’t play in the U23s game tomorrow as he’s not fit to play 45 or 60 minutes. He doesn’t want to play in it and get injured and I don’t want him to.
“In terms of getting players back and some getting minutes into them and some just recovering, it’s a pretty good thing, I think.”
He says his players will be given a few days off during the break: “They’ll get some time off to recover because the games do come thick and fast and when we come back, of course, we’ve got Saturday-Tuesday-Saturday.
“We’re travelling to Blackburn first, which is hardly round the corner, then we’ve got Burton at home, which is a huge game for us, then we’re up to Newcastle which is even less than just round the corner.
“So we’ve got a fair bit of travelling and a fair bit of work to do, so they’ll get a bit of time to recover.”
The Blues’ recent games have seen them face the division’s leaders today, third-placed Brighton on Tuesday as well as in-form Leeds but McCarthy warns that the likes of Blackburn and Burton after the break also won’t be easy opposition.
“I see Burton have won today, they’ve had a good result, so I’m not going to describe them as weak, there are no weak teams,” he added. “We’ve got to play better and beat them.”
"Any new injuries from today’s game? “Only me, a bit of a broken heart, that’s all, other than that I’m fine.”
Huddersfield manager David Wagner was delighted to claim a win at what he feels is one of the toughest places to visit in the Championship.
“I think for every manager three points against Ipswich away is massive, is huge,” said Wagner, who refused to be drawn on reports linking him with Derby County. “This is a very a difficult place to go and to get three points.
“A tough challenge, a lot of one-against-one challenges, an uncomfortable opponent who is very aggressive.
“I think the game was even, we had our opportunities, not a lot, but to be fair I didn’t expect to have a lot of opportunities.
“Elias Kachunga hit the post, we had a great opportunity from Jonathan Hogg from a corner after five minutes, I think he had to score from two metres.
“And then we used one set piece for a goal, often this is the story how Ipswich is successful - stay in the game and score off set pieces but today we did this.
"Our first set piece goal of the season right at the best moment of the season and it is a massive, huge win for us. Not because of our run because it’s Ipswich away, a very difficult place to go.”

Mick McCARTHY understands fans frustrations? Apart from other comments on here, I recall comments by him last season to the effect that if fans were chanting for a particular player to come on as a substitute, that would make more determined NOT to do it. The is just total contempt if it is otherwise the right thing to do. Sadly, this manager lacks imagination, is a one-trick pony and is totally risk averse which is blatantly obvious from his continued team selections of his favourites irrespective of their form or ability. The Premiership sadly is becoming less of a dream and more of an outright fantasy........

Off point a little but kind of not really....just wondering....Connor Grant...why has he faded in to oblivion and been left out in the cold? Looked good and promising first few games, got a brief injury and has now just been phased out. Dozzell, promising last season, potential to play a part this season....not a chance. It's beyond a joke!

I've just been thinking how times change in such a short period of time. My wife, .sons and I were season ticket holders up until a few years ago. Premiership, relegation, play offs heartaches, Wembley, that magical season, and beyond. A few drinks before the game. Something to look forward to with a midweek game as a bonus. The occasional away match. I confess that in the last few years I've only been to a few games, and cannot remember the last time I saw us score. My last game was Watford away season before last when my sons talked me into it. To my discrace didn't even see the winning goal. We'd adjourned to Wetherspoons by then. Today, if we were playing in my back garden I'd draw the curtains!

McCarthy nows the time to go whilst Walmart are recruiting there you can sit at a checkout and do the same thing time after time just like do when you set up our teams tactics.

He wont explain his team sheets or tactics because he cant do it without lying. His team sheet is based on who he likes on a personal level and his tactics are because hes a frightened little coward. All he'd say is "Dougies been different class" and "Chambo's an inspiration" when we all know thats complete b******t!

Mick, sorry mate but you don't understand my frustration, otherwise I would still have a season ticket and you wouldn't have a job.

I really ain't interested in reading about your predictable spiel MM. It's repetition and nothing is gonna change until you leave our once great club!

I suggest someone tells MM that if he wants to have another management gig in this country, he needs to resign. Shocking afternoon, toxic atmosphere, some of the players who look completely lost, I bet ward is really regretting signing for us now. Everything he says is just complete BS, same propaganda over and over again, even he doesn't believe it. I can't believe that if Evans, as a business man will just let this slide out of control. Shades of PJ now, just can't see where the next 3pts is coming from.

You have creative players on the pitch witch pitch they are sitting bloody behind you on the bench. You are ruining every player that has come to us that can pass a ball and any half decent player that cant dislodge your boring, slow, uncreative midfielders what does that tell them.It dosent matter how many strikers are out injured you havent and wont play two of them up topso dont give me that bull.My frustration has not just arrived in the last few weeks I have been critical of your style, tactics for a very long time and been murdered on here for saying so but my views on you have very much come to the fore. You have been papering over the cracks for a long time fooling know one but yourself
carsey added 22:55 - Oct 1
We have plenty of players who could and would pass the ball if given the opportunity but McCarthy is preoccupied with the old fashioned let's run around and dig in negative football from last century. The game has changed. Why can't he see that. The winners no longer play kick and rush they keep the ball. Yes occasionally a small club will out muscle a larger one in a one off game but over a season possession and control matter plus a striker worthy of the description

I literally couldn't disagree with the majority of these comments any more. Mick is an experienced manager who has been successful at every club he has been at. Several things have gone against him so far this season, injuries to key players being the main but also the big players who have been playing have let him down, Chambers for one has been awful. In todays game where Leeds sack managers after 5 games and the average tenure of a Championship mannager is less than 12 Months MM is in a results driven business which is why he prioritises results over performances, in 5 years time none of you will give a hoot how we played but the result is permanent. Liverpool fans who remember winning the FA Cup with 2 Michael Owen goals in 2001 won't remember that for 80 minutes they were played off the park by Arsenal who should have been out of sight, they just remember holding the trophy at the final whistle. nobody remembers all the 1-0's we nicked 2 years ago because we sneaked into the Play Offs, the performances then arn't that different now except we arn't getting that bit of luck or decison from a Ref at the right time. I may get several minuses for this but any of you who want him out and say it was better under Keane and Jewell clearly don't remember the 3-0 defeat by Sheffield Wednesday the game before MM arrived where we were bottom of the league with 7 Points and the visiting fans were 'olaying' as they took the p1ss out of us.- that day was the 1 and only time in 28 years i have booed them off, now granted we arn't the best team but whoever MM puts out tries and plays their best, we never even used to get that. Evans is not going to sack MM and MM isn't going to resign so all the whining and whinging is not going to help the club or the team it will just create a negative atmosphere which will be harder for the players to perform in. we are supporters and it's in times like these is where they need our support, anyone can jump on the bandwagon when times are good or join in with the critisism when times are bad. stop being sheep and for god sake support your club, its players and its manager.

Time is up for Mick. The oppositions managers opinion Of us says it all. No one respects this overly aggressive style. Boring tactics and lack of football. Laughable.
GiveusaWave added 23:31 - Oct 1
We are too predictable. Opposition teams set up knowing EXACTLY the style of football we are going to be playing. Our line up is predictable as is our "strategy".

Can't disagree it was a poor performance but don't agree it is all down to MM. No strikers means it will be defensive football but sadly the midfield today was even poorer than usual. Posters are quite entitled to vent their fury but at times this site resembles a a UKIP forum full of hate. No need for any of that; it just makes the club and its supporters look grubby.

Pencilpete - take a look at the the last 30 league games and not just the apparent bad luck of this season, the wheels came off ages ago and MM knows we haven't got the strikers anymore to save him long term, as they have in the past. If neither MM or ME own up to this and blindly carry on believing the only way to stop the rot is to defend, defend then defend some more and hope Douglas finally gets that goal that he's got in him - We are most definitely doomed!

Sorry could not be bothered with a new post going to repeat myself!!!!!!!!!!! If MM read all these posts would he consider resigning? I would like to think so. An even more important change would be owner - ME has appointed Keane, Jewell and MM and MM has been the most successful, with little or no money. Go figure. I have been supporting town since 1975 and really can't be bother to book a flight, hotel etc to watch the Town the way we are playing now - I am based in Dublin, I am sure fans elsewhere in Europe feel the same. Sorry Mick its time to go, but let's hope Evans goes too.

Marcus Evans and Mick McCarthy both out now please.i don't know what Evans' agenda is but it surely ain't anything to do with making Ipswich town FC better. Go and put your name on some other teams shirt and take Mr McCarthy with you. Now please.

Sale of Murphy was a good deal; selling him 2 days before the window closed & then being prepared to push the boat and replace him wasn't. I have to agree MM days are over in my view. Have stood with him in the main but like others can't see where the next win is from..

What worries me is some of the names being put forward by fans are no better than the one we have. Fat Sam?, please his tactics are nearly as prehistoric as MM. He would have taken England in reverse by 20 years if he had stayed any longer in the job. Steve Bruce, really. The bottom of the barrel really is sparse is it not.

There has been so many things that have gone wrong last season and this which are too long to this . The main thing MM can't grasp is we are Ipswich not some mickey mouse club and we should be in the premier league. We should be playing football with no square pegs in round holes . We should be setting up to win games not to draw and the opposition should be setting up because they are worried about us not the other way round . We have some good players but they are not playing to their potential. And seriously why was no goalscorer signed in the summer ? Finally too many sick notes McGoldrick,Bishop,Coke and poor signings Digby etc ! Leave now before you can't get any other work .
