Blues Eyeing Irish Winger
Thursday, 13th Oct 2016 10:02

Town boss Mick McCarthy is keeping tabs on Dundalk winger Daryl Horgan, according to a report in Ireland.

Horgan, 24, is currently widely viewed as the best player in Irish football and is on the verge of breaking into Martin O’Neill’s Republic of Ireland squad following his performances for the Lilywhites, who are closing in on their third successive Airtricity League Premier Division title and impressed in Europe this season as they became the first Irish side to reach the play-off round of the Champions League.

According to the Irish Sun McCarthy sent scouts to watch as Horgan scored twice to see his side to a 2-1 victory over Cork City at Oriel Park on Tuesday evening with O’Neill also in the crowd.

The Town boss is said to be set to take a look at the Galway-born wideman in person before the Irish season ends at the start of November.

Horgan, whose contract is coming to an end and will be available on a free transfer in January, started his career with Salthill Devon before moving on to Sligo Rovers, Cork City, initially on loan, and then his current club in 2013, having spent time on trial at Barnsley and Torquay United.

Capped by Ireland at U19 and U21 levels, primarily right-sided Horgan is understood to have been watched by a number of English clubs in recent months with Everton linked yesterday. He has said he is happy at Dundalk but will look at his options before making a decision on his future.

While with Dundalk Horgan has also carried off the 2015 FAI Cup, the 2014 League of Ireland Cup and the 2015 President’s Cup.

He was named the PFAI Young Player of the Year in 2014 and was selected in the PFAI Premier Division Team of the Year in 2013, 2014 and 2015.

Meanwhile, Max Booth, who TWTD revealed was on trial with Town last week, scored six times for Needham Market's reserves as they defeated Ipswich Athletic 11-0 in the Suffolk Senior Cup last night.

Booth is one of three 17-year-olds from local non-league sides to recently have been offered the chance to spend time with the Blues, along with AFC Sudbury defender Tyler French, who played for the U18s and U23s earlier this week, and Gorleston striker Connor Ingram.

Currie10.He's told to play there, not his choice,I'm sure.!.Should play up front, but then MM is clueless so looks like he will remain in that position should he get picked to play.

If he's injured we might get him.

I didn't say it wasn't his choice - you're correct he's told to play there I merely said he hasn't a clue how to play there.

It's not his fault more Mick's - he's got pace gets around well however.

* Is he beating a man at present? No.
* Is he making angles or good movement for people to find him? No.

He's hiding. Vs Norwich it was like playing with 10 men. Sure defensively he gets on with it but then again in the Norwich game it was him pulling out that ultimately cost us a goal.

I'm not criticising him for the sake of it and I like Sears as a player, but in my opinion he isn't a very good option out wide left.

He'll never get in the team and stay there with MM as manager, too many excellent players ahead of him.

Mr Horgan dont dream in coming here as your bit of skill and your potential talent will be ruined under Mc Carthy and its very sad to say this about my club. Its clear he will leave you to rot on the bench or in the reserves and your place will be filled with a striker or central midfielder or full back he has done this to all wingers that we have taken in.This man is clearly nuts who thinks our team is doing great and the balance is right and we are going in the right direction we all know witch one that is..

Was only thinking the other day after hearing about the three local lads being given trials, that MM hasn't been fishing in his 'home country 'recently;and lo and behold!

I know Douglas is from the Emerald Isle as is Murph;but I cant recall McCarthy having any joy with the youngsters he continually brings over from Ireland ,and there have been several during his 4 years here. The standard would appear to be much lower over there than on the continent of Europe which he seems to virtually ignore(except for Knudsen)

However I suppose its worth having a look as its another freebie;but it should also be borne in mind that Mick has not introduced a single young player from the youth set up yet in his 4 years either, who has become a regular first teamer, as far as I can recall(Mings came from Chippenham Town)

Why bother. We are continually reminded each week about what good form our midfield is in and how essential Douglas is to the human race that he just simply won't get on.

I like this player, I am somewhat perplexed with the attitude here. Are we saying all potential signings should be suspended while MM is manager because of his style of play?

Many of us are pi**ed off with our current form but are we going cut off our collective noses to spite our faces???
