McGoldrick Looking Forward to Linking Up With Best
Tuesday, 25th Oct 2016 18:29

Striker David McGoldrick is delighted to have returned to action after his latest injury setback and is looking forward to linking up with his old friend Leon Best in the Town attack.

McGoldrick suffered a freak ankle injury in the EFL Cup tie against Stevenage in August but made his comeback as a half-time sub in Saturday’s 3-0 defeat at Newcastle as a replacement for Best, a childhood friend from Nottingham and the Notts County and Southampton youth set-ups.

"Me and Leon go way back, I've known him since I was about eight years old," McGoldrick told Ipswich Player HD.

"Not only did we play football together, we would hang out too and I think he even stayed at mine for a sleepover on Millennium New Year's Eve!

"We haven't played alongside each other since our Southampton days, so it would be good if we could do that for Ipswich.”

The 28-year-old, who netted his first goal of the season from the penalty spot against Barnsley on the opening day, believes Best will get nearer to the top of his game the more he plays.

"Leon is a good player," he added. "He's strong, he's brings others into play and he can score goals as well.

“He has got everything, he just needs a run of games, which he is getting now after not having a pre-season.

"But we've got some good strikers at the club and competition for places is strong here. For now, I'm just concentrating on getting match fit and getting minutes under my belt. I got through 45 minutes at Newcastle fine and I'm looking forward to Saturday now.”

Speaking last month, Best said he was similarly looking forward to playing alongside his fellow Republic of Ireland international.

“I’ve grown up with him from the age of about eight or nine so I know everything about him,” he said.

“I can’t wait to play with him again. We’ve always kept in touch and we were in Dubai together in the summer.

“He’s from Nottingham, I’m from Nottingham and we always speak. He’s looking forward to us getting together out on the pitch again. We played for Nottinghamshire, the city boys, and at Notts County, of course.

“That was a long time ago but we were also together at Southampton, where we lived together in ‘The Lodge’ [Darwin Lodge where Saints’ youth players were housed].

"We have some great memories and he’s a great player. When he comes back we’ll be more fierce and powerful.”

It would be great if those two could form a successful strike partnership. For that to happen we will need to play two strikers, and midfielders who service them with chances. Rotherham is the ideal fixture to do that, let's be positive with the starting line up.

What a heart warming story the club's PR machine have come up with. Best once had a sleepover at McG's house. Now we all feel so much better about everything. These two just won't play any kind of run of games together for tactical and injury reasons. They are talking up two players, one of whom is never fully fit and the other nobody wanted. What do you take us for?

Good so as other clubs are doing sack the manager and let the new guy get these two players playing along side each other then we will be sorted!!

Hopefully this time, McGoldrick will manage to keep fit, as he shows so much class on the ball when he's on song. Could be just the link for Best to kick on too.
Here's hoping, anyway.

Agreed Hoppy, could just be what we need at this time.

I thought Mick said Saturday that he wasn't going to put the 2 of them on the pitch at the same time? Unless he meant he wasn't going to do that away to Newcastle? The link the 2 of them have can only be a good thing

Two strikers in one team? Blimey

I agree, runaround, if they were able to forge a Ambrose/Bent, or even a McGoldrick/Murphy link, they could both benefit from it... you never know, we could even start looking at having a positive goal difference figure...

But that would mean two strikes and breaking up the back six?

I just can't see Mick starting with both. Plus, if Douglas/Skuse continue to start in the centre of midfield, it's unlikely either will get any service anyway.

Perhaps it might happen if we get Carl Robinson in as from what Mick said on Saturday it won,t happen on his watch.

Not sure why Didsy us saying he's looking forward to linking up with Best, because Mick has already stated he will not be playing to two together. Unless he has kerpow moment and finally plays McGoldrick in the middle of midfield just behind a central striker. God forbid, eh!!

It will be the first time this season that any two players in the team have linked up. I wish them the best of luck!!!

I have hope that Didz and Best could be our version of Wigans Ellington and Roberts back in the day!

Rotherham seem to be favourites, which is strange

Let's hope this will be the partnership which pushes us up the league.
Thing is will MM play them both in a 4.4.2, he loves his 4.3.3 4.5.1 formations.
Time will tell I suppose!!

I would like Best and Sears to play up front, Didz and Williams centre mid, Skuse to protect the back four to allow full backs to attack, a natural winger is required, perhaps Lawrence can fill that bill ahead of Ward?

With some creative midfielders behind them giving them decent service these two could be a handful, and kick start the season but we are playing the world beaters Rotherham so it will be the same negative selection from our leader!!!

Both are more injury prone than goal scorers , both have poor scoring records for strikers apart from at League 1 level and cannot see MM playing them together .
Think we need Dids creativity in the side desperately but he will get frustrated with the system and look dis interested with the ball flying about unless other players are put in aswell and really think we need a better option than Best up top , would like to see Dids and Sears but that would mess up MM s long ball crap
