McCarthy: I've Done a Very Good Job Under the Terms and Conditions at Town
Saturday, 10th Dec 2016 06:00

Town boss Mick McCarthy has reiterated that he believes he has “done a very good job under the terms of conditions of how [he has] been asked to do it” since taking over at Portman Road four years ago and will "continue to do that".

QPR manager Ian Holloway made an impassioned defence of his Portman Road counterpart after the Blues’ 3-0 defeat of his side a fortnight ago, reminding the former Ireland boss’s detractors of where the Blues were when McCarthy took over and pointing out that he has been hampered by the sales of players such as Tyrone Mings and Daryl Murphy.

“He’s a football colleague of mine, but we don’t go out drinking together or anything,” McCarthy said of his relationship with Holloway. “We’re always pretty respectful me and Ollie.”

Told of Holloway’s comments, specifically his suggestion that it should be asked “why [Town] keep having to sell all [their] best players all the time”, McCarthy laughed: “The reason I’m laughing is just because Ollie’s asking it doesn’t mean to say I’m going to answer it to you. I’m not quite as green as I’m cabbage looking!”

However, he added that he believes he has done a good job in the circumstances of having had to make those sales along the way, even if he’s aware not everyone agrees with that view.

At the Supporters Club AGM there was a little hostile reception for me at one point and I just told them, ‘I’ve done a really good job here and if at any stage they want to get me out, they can always get in the stand and sing’.

“But because I’ve done those things, because I’ve sold Murph, because I’ve sold Tyrone, because I’ve replaced them, because we’ve stayed competitive all the time, I’ve done a bloody good job. I’ve no problems with that at all.”

The Blues have finished sixth and seventh in the Championship in the last two seasons on comparatively tight budgets and McCarthy continues to insist he has no problem working within those restrictions.

“I’ve done a very good job under the terms and conditions of how I’ve been asked to do it and I’ll continue to do that,” he said.

What does he believe is currently holding back the Blues? Additional quality? Resources to fund it? “I guess it’s that or either another magician manager that can turn them all into wonderful players, better than I can, and they’ll go up the league and get promoted. That’s the options.”

Despite recently expressing his frustration that mitigating factors at opposition clubs, such as injuries or player exits, have been highlighted by the media more than similar problems at Town, McCarthy says he’s not one to make a big play of those types of issues.

“You [the media] give me a chance and a position and a profile to stamp my feet and pull my hair out and say, ‘It’s not fair, I wish I was doing something else…’” he added.

“Why? From day one when I’ve come in I’ve never changed what I’ve said which is probably unusual for managers, they change the mantra time and again, ‘Well, it’s this fault, it’s that fault…’.

“I’m holding myself responsible. Those are the players who are my players, the ones I’ve signed that I’ve got to do better with and make sure results are better. I’ve got to hold myself responsible as well as asking each and every individual to be responsible.”

Meanwhile, speaking yesterday ahead of today's game, Cardiff boss Neil Warnock echoed Holloway's thoughts on fans' criticism of McCarthy.

"I always think it’s like when people shout for Wenger’s head - be careful what you wish for," he said.

"If Ipswich were spending millions and millions I could understand the frustrations of their supporters.

"Mick's done a fabulous job working to a tight budget for years and he's kept them respectable.

"But they'll be crying for him until he goes, then someone else will come in and in six months they'll cry for him to go as well."

Well he's right isn't he.

Overachieves for 3/4 seasons on no budget and now people think being in or around the playoffs should be the norm depsite not spending.

The issue is the lack of funds available. He's not a miracle worker.

This year has been poor but he has earned the right in my opinion to get things going again.

We know all that.
Evans is a useless owner with his own agenda
But what irks is this I`m a big Northern man attitude yet he does not have the balls to go to Evans and say you are making my job impossible, I need a substantial input of money to make ITFC competitive or I`m off.
If he did that he would have all are support but he does not and so the decline continues.

So he has, replaced Murphy!!! Who with, the fans haven't noticed? Best doesn't seem to be the answer, MM has admitted that himself. Desperate for a big powerful c/f who is good in the air.

This is the first real time that MM has admitted to the lack of support from the club, something we have all wanted him to have. Keane and Jewell both got significant support, whilst MM has had to deal in freebies and loans.

High expectations have cost him support. If he came out at the beginning of the season saying "I think this is going to be a tough one and our aim is to avoid relegation. We have very little money to spend and sales are not going to be invested back into players" he might upset the owner but get back support in droves. It's been a near impossible job for him and it's no wonder we see so much hoofball. Quality passers cost money, as do clinical finishers. What we have is a squad of "grinders".

Re-signing of Varney seems to have been replacement for Murphy.

How many times is this deluded and arrogant man going to tell us what a good job he has done? That is for others to decide.
Amongst so many other things Chambers as captain and right back eptiomises what a joke of a manager McCarthy is.

McCarthy OUT

Neil Warnock is another tosser. Thinking we only give managers 6 months...obviously doesn't know much about our club/fans. We've been very patient for 18-20 months whilst this dross has been served up and it's only just started to show that supporters are peeved.

No1 disagrees that he hasn't had as much money as previous managers. We did however spend in excess of £3m in the last transfer window and had 2 other bids in for players , one of which was in excess of £1m. This squad is by McCarthys own admission the best he's had since he came here. It's his team selections, tactics and aging players out of position that is the reason we aren't found as well as we maybe should be. It's strange isn't it, that he's always said before that he knew the situation regarding funds when he took the job and was happy to go with that, but now, when maybe his job is at risk, he now decides to put the blame elsewhere

It sounds more like an epitaph to me.Ok,he has managed to unearth a few above average players on a shoestring and made a few bob on the way,but the backing from the owner has been to put it mildly "non exsistant "
The team selection and style of play has been diabolical, square pegs in round holes, exciting young players not been given a chance to name a few.
From his point of view it might look as though he has done a good job,but from the paying public who pay a great amount of money to follow there club it has been a diabolical four seasons and just cannot go on for much longer.
Time to go MM,we've had enough now.

I'm more interested to know what Evans has to say about his detractors. But I don't suppose us mortals are worthy of hearing a comment straight from the lips of the great man himself.

I wish people would stop referring to the Mings sale like he was a lynch pin in our team and it was a massive loss. Great prospect but with one full season under his belt he was far and away from irreplaceable and Murphy is mid-30s so it was a given for that money. The general sentiment is that MM was forced into those sales. He wasn't. They were no brainers. Not replacing Murphy is the biggest problem but if MM didn't want to fork out the cash on Washington that's his own fault.

Does MM deserve more of a chance? Maybe. Do I want to give it to him? Definitely not. The minute you stop treating the fans with respect you're lost and he's done nothing to endear himself to us over the last 2 seasons when he should be at his most gracious given the litter he calls football. His egocentrism and arrogance aren't anywhere near the character traits I look for in a person, let alone the figurehead of an institution we all hold dear.

Unfortunately the owner of the football club has given up and has no ambition. That's very clear. The likes of Warnock and Holloway would know there is no budget because MM would have told them. Evans is just happy to sit back and let Mick keep us in the league. Cash in where possible. When you think of what he has spent on fees, it is considerable but look at the money raked in. Profit of £17M on transfer fees.

However, there is equally no excuse for the negative tactics in the past year or standard of football. The managers attitude towards the fans has also been disappointing. No doubt when we win against injury ravaged Cardiff today the two finger salute will go up demanding the fans accept he is brilliant. Well, a win today would paper over the cracks.

Sadly a combination of Evans and MM is driving the fans away in droves. Season ticket holders can't always be bothered to attend. Very sad but it won't improve while Evans remains at the club.

The biggest gripe I have is with the awful style of football we attempt to play. Even sides from the lower leagues now have a go at the passing game (see Portsmouth last year) so for me there's no excuse there by saying we don't have the money. My Sunday league side try to get the ball down and pass it-there's no excuse for why Ipswich can't do the same.

Self praise is no recommendation, again I will repeat others have done better with less. Before he has not mentioned the lack of funds, always saying he knew the situation when he took the job, now he seems to be using it to justify the lack of progress made in his time at the club.

I think the point mm is making is itfc are trying to compete in a league with teams like newcastle who are spending more on one player than we have on our entire team. A valid argument.

Shows that the owner all though owed a lot of money has no intrest in this club and looks upon us supporters as a bunch of wa+++kers. All his appointment as managers has shown he don't give a to++ about us. ITFC as we loved it is dead.

There has to be some extra financial inducement for McCarthy to stick with Ipswich, as a manager who has had previous success in getting teams promoted and being a international team manager also.
McCarthy seems very content with the tough restrictions he is supposedly under in scrabbing about searching for budget value players these past 4 years.
He hasn't moved to the area, he has his home about London, so that must involve a 2 hour journey to arrive here and return, (unless he has some ling of temporary quarters in between)

So I go back to where I began, there has to be much more in it for McCarthy; for him to endure the criticism from fans and media having not spent in recruiting players who have the required ability to make a difference in this league and give us a realistic chance of being promotion contenders.

McCarthy is boring both personally and the tactics he employs on the pitch, he and
that ghastly owner Evans have taken away all what was good about this club and what we were renowned for.

What annoys me is that during Euros watching Williams thought this is the player we need. He sits on the bench & we have to watch Douglas contributing zero to the team. Mick I wanted you as manager but a man of your experience should do better

Completely agree. If he does go who the f**k is going to take this job with £0 to spend and do better than MM? New ownership needed, a plethora of clubs would give an arm and a leg to be where we are having spent so little, have some faith. You need to spend money to get out of this league, something Evans clearly isn't prepared to do anymore so it's time for him to go. Selling for big money three years on the spin without anything given back to supporters, Evans Out. COYB

Even when we finished 6/7th the style of football was generally sh!te. Yes, he did a good job in the first couple of years but since then we have gone backwards. He is unable to adapt...... which leads to extinction (God I hope it's his demise before our once proud Club's).

I can not remember the last time I was entertained at PR and we are fortunate that there are so many other poor to average teams in the Championship.

We will be here supporting the Town long after McCarthy has gone. He is situational leader at best but will never give us what we crave for. You are driving life-long fans away in their droves!

Mate you're gone & if Evans can't see that then you need to be outta here too.
