Wolves Linked With Town Skipper
Sunday, 1st Jan 2017 11:00

Wolves are reportedly weighing up a January bid for Town skipper Luke Chambers.

According to the Sunday Mirror, the Molineux club are considering a move for the 31-year-old as they look to bolster their squad.

Chambers, it’s reported, would be available for a bargain price as he is out of contract in the summer.

However, while the deal the centre-half or full-back signed in October 2014 does run to the end of June this year it includes an option for the club to extend it for a further season.

Chambers has been a fixture in the Town side since joining the Blues in the summer of 2012 and was made club captain by Mick McCarthy following Carlos Edwards’s departure at the end of 2013/14.

The transfer window opens today with the Blues closing in on the additions of strikers Danny Ward from Rotherham and Cauley Woodrow from Fulham.

Echo most of what has been said re Chambers commitment to playing out of position but if he goes we loose a very poor right back....but potentially a very good CB .
LC has looked v unhappy most of this last season and for me does not act like a captain .....limited vocals on the pitch, often found out of position and then body language blames other players .
If he is unhappy let him go....get another hungry CB in as cover for smith and Webster (Berra going) and use the money to actually get a seasoned RB in to teach our youngsters how to play in this position .....there are no role models for a RB position and certainly no need for us to bring in an expensive one when we have the talent coming through the ranks

TAKE HIM, TAKE HIM...
What he IS is a centre back and he's never gonna be played there and the primary weakness, which teams exploit is the right side of our defence, where Chambers is.
Let's for once get a round peg in a round hole.

Happy days. If Luke were to go it would be very good for everybody concerned, as long as we keep hold of Webster. Luke could go with our blessing. Luke could get a better contract with a club that might play him in his best position. We could get a proper right back, or just give Josh his chance. Win, win win.

If it's true that the club aren't talking to him that is a disgrace.
Whatever you think of where/how he is playing at the moment (& I am in the he's not a RB camp) he has essentially given up 2 years of his career playing out of positIon pandering to the dinasours "plans" .... and for that alone he deserves the respect of not being discarded by Mick as a "sop" to the fans.
Add to that his clear passion and the fact that with Berra almost certainly leaving why oh why wouldn't you allow him to ask least push for a CB position !!
You watch him leave & play brilliantly at CB for someone else ....
2017 starts with the same muddled ITFC thinking .... Happy New Year

I believe Emmanuel is more than capable, and should have had a season under his belt already imo. Unfortunately MM has ruined Chambers not only as a RB but as a CB too. Bring the lad in from Dundalk as cover for Emmanuel

Are most people saying take him the same that said losing Murphy wouldn't be that bad? All the players say he is the glue that holds the spirit together. If he is fed up I put it down to all the abuse, yes he's not the best rb to grace Portman road but he is only human. How many of you would be happy at work if 2000 people kept abusing you?

How come we are already suggesting he is available at a bargain price.
I appreciate his contract is up in the summer, but that is no reason to give him away...to any of our rivals...unless they want to play him at RB too :-)

I'm not sure that selling your captain, and leader on the pitch, to a divisional rival at this stage of the season is the way to go.

If it happens it can only be because he's had enough and wants away.

His time may well be up, however we can't afford to lose any leaders, if he is good enough to bolster wolves squad he is defiantly worth keeping in ours

It is true that as an out of position player he makes us very vulnerable at the back but he does not deserve the vitriol from some on here who should be ashamed of themselves. Unless he is to be slotted in with Webster and fight it out with Smith I think a move to Wolves would be in the player's interest and long term in the team's interest. Whatever happens I wish him and his family well.

Another player MM has ruined by playing out of position. Can never doubt his passion and commitment though! sadly not a good RB and at times a very weak link. If he goes i wish him well and i hope he gets to play in his proper position and he gets to show what he is capable of when his shackles are taken off.

Feel sorry for Chambers, it all went wrong as far as I'm concerned when MM signed Berra. We didn't need Berra at that time and MM juggled the defence around to fit them all in. Chambers was the one who was asked to adapt and he has given his all, but he is not a right back and is consistently being found out, again on Friday night for the goal. I was happy with Smith and Chambers in the middle but we needed a rb! Emmanuel is the man to step up but maybe will tire after a few matches, we need 2 players to compete for this role. If Chambers does go I think it is the right move for him and the club at this time. After this torrid season MM know's he needs to sort out defence, it just has not been good enough. Chambers a poor rb, Smith been out injured, Berra off at the end of season and Knudsen not good enough for where we need to be, but could cover for Kenlock. Personally I feel we need Emmanuel, Webster, Smith and Kenlock in at the start of next season or before, that is the future, but with good backup or better players to come in, now or in the summer. Good luck Luke Chambers you have been a good loyal servant to the club and you must now do what is best for you and your family.

As much as Chambers has been a loyal servant to the club and nobody could ever question his passion and commitment I really do feel a new broom is needed if we're to kick on. His relationship with the fans seems to have soured recently and maybe a fresh start is what's needed for all concerned.
He may not have been the best player on the pitch but he has been an outstanding captain and I'd wish him the very best for the future.

Agreed cloddy. He doesn't deserve the dogs abuse by some on here, he try's hard every game in a position that he hates for the team. Passionate skipper who at this stage of career, needs to look out for himself and family. Good luck whatever happens between now and the summer.

Played continually out of position here and will do well in CD at Wolves. He's a poor RB, but a good CD. Wolves have no intention of using him at RB, so a very good signing for them.

We should be only aiming to release, loan or sell players that aren't regulars, especially mid way through a season. Varney, Coke and Douglas are possibilities, not our Captain. He's a strong presence in the team and wouldn't be Captain otherwise. Emmanuel is not ready for regular first team football and the only other players who we have who can play right back are Skuse and Coke, both of which prefer midfield. Not adequate cover UNLESS we buy in a REAL right back.

Definitely a good move! 31 now not getting any better. An awful RB and getting rid of him will give Emmanuel the chance he deserves. Should also force mick into the market to get another RB aswell!

While he may have served ITFC well and have great passion that's not good enough. He is responsible for so many problems in our defence and teams constantly attack him as the biggest weakness in our team.

Dissboyitfc added 12:46 - Jan 1
No doesn't deserve abuse but when you are highly paid to perform and you fail to perform you can expect criticism. Though its mainly MMs fault in his persistance to squeeze square pegs in round holes.

Mick_Mills_Tache added 12:47 - Jan 1
As much as I criticise Luke for being the worst right back in the league, you can't deny he is a loyal servant to the club and the criticism he gets is down to McCarthy. I'd welcome the move as he's never going to play in the centre now Webster is here and he's not likely to be happy sitting on the bench (especially as he's probably the highest earner in the club).

Emmanuel is more than ready to step up. Also, didn't MM buy Digby because he could also play RB? What's happened to him? (Although I don't think he's up to scratch either).

If you do go, Luke, thanks for giving 100% every week. It's not your fault that McCarthy has tried his best to ruin your career.

carsey added 12:53 - Jan 1
I still don't understand why McCarthy has not gone with 3 CBs especially now with Webster here. That would have suited Chambers and allowed full backs to get up the pitch and join in the attack.
Like many others I believe Chambers has been the victim of his own willingness to carryout McCarthy's wishes and play out of position. Another player damaged by the dinosaur.

Whatever your view on Chambers as a right back, there are two schools of thought on this:

1. Chambers is our Captain and no doubt a good influence to have around the place. Would it show ambition selling him in January?

2. The chances of us going down is very low. The chances of us going up is also low. The squad needs a shake up - it could be good for all concerned if some players move on now with replacements brought in - giving them half a season to bed in so we can hit the ground running next season. The fans would likely accept the odd bad result if they could see a longer term strategy. I'd caveat by saying this wouldn't work if we sold him and replaced with a loan.

I tend to favour option 2.
