McCarthy: Webster Out for the Season
Thursday, 19th Jan 2017 14:07

Town boss Mick McCarthy has confirmed that central defender Adam Webster has been ruled out for the remainder of the season having suffered damaged ligaments in training earlier this week.

“He’s out for the rest of the season,” McCarthy said. “He’s done his ankle ligaments, ruptured them, so he needs an operation.

“It just happened in training, he went to nick a ball and he rolled his ankle and he’s ruptured them unfortunately.

“It’s a blow for him and for us. It hurts everybody when you get somebody like that injured, but he’s on the upward curve, he’s had his move, he’s been excellent. And then for us it’s sad that we’re losing such a good player for the rest of the season.”

Town, who can include new signings Kieffer Moore and Jordan Spence in their squad for Saturday's trip to Huddersfield, the duo having been unavailable for Tuesday’s FA Cup defeat at Lincoln, have had significant injury problems this season, although Brett Pitman (calf) and Teddy Bishop (ankle) are close to making their returns.

“If we hadn’t had bad luck we’d have had no luck at all with injuries,” McCarthy reflected. “We’ve got a couple coming back though today, Pits has trained, Teddy Bishop has trained, so they’re getting closer. But it’s been a bad season for injuries.

“Pits will travel, he’ll be in the squad but Teddy will play on Sunday [for the U23s in the Premier League Cup] at Liverpool.”

He says on-loan Crystal Palace man Jonny Williams is undergoing his rehab at Playford Road but is still some way off a return to action having undergone shoulder surgery.

“Jonny is here, he’s progressing nicely but there was a time limit to it and that’s still the same,” he said.

“He’s not going to be any longer, there’s nothing gone wrong with it, he should be back when they said he was going to be back, the beginning of March, I believe.”

Left-back Myles Kenlock is out for around another couple of weeks with a calf injury, while David McGoldrick (hamstring) is expected back for the trip to Preston a week on Saturday.

Luke Hyam (knee) and Tommy Smith (back) are both back in training after surgery and are expected to play U23s games at the beginning of February. Midfielder Giles Coke (knee) also remains sidelined after an operation.

Bad news, but his recent form was a little worrying and having Chambers at CB is better than at RB

What a shame. It never rains but it pours. What else can go wrong. Good luck with your recovery Adam.

We need Webster but with this we will be able to keep him. At least until he is fit again and Marcus Scrooge gets a tempting offer from a club with an owner who is concerned about his club.

I feel sorry for Webster but I can't feel sorry for Ipswich Town after four years of McCarthy we going to have a decent centre half

Can we get a witch doctor in? I swear we are cursed! Sacrifice a budgie before the next home game as an offering to the football gods?

Well that's a shame, he was starting to look like a decent centre half, get fit and see you next season. At least the positive is josh Emmanuel will have a good run in the team now.

Sums up the season from our point of view.

Adding another injury to a list of insulting performances... ..

Let's just write this season off. We should use this transfer window to get some good young players in, and the rest of the season to focus on getting some of our academy graduates more playing time.

From the team point of view I mean.

Sack Chambers as captain.

Give the lads a go.

Get Tommy Smith back, give him the armband and get some fire back and steel back into the defence.

PRAY that Lawrence's goals keep us up.

Let Evans sell Playford Rd or whatever else he needs to take from us to make him be off to Ireland or Brazil or wherever

Get MM a job with the East Anglian, Sky Sports, or anywhere else as an occasional columnist

Whatever. I just can't stand the idea of us being the new Coventry City, or Sheff Utd, or Swindon, or Blackburn, or Blackpool.........

The thing is you weren't playing Williams and Bishop when they were fit as they couldn't get a start ahead of Skuse and Douglas so cannot really use that as another excuse MM

So many players get injured in training, something must be wrong in what they are being asked to do.

could this be a blessing in disguise, webster definitely wont be moving on this month now and it makes it more likely that he will be at Town for next season, it gives emmanuel the chance to play a lot more and chambers will now be CB????

How low is our club when its a blessing in disguise a player is injured so we can keep him sound like a McCarthy plan just like the way he has us playing another plonker way of thinking. It dosent matter who plays were we are so sh't it beggers belief..

Very clever, the only way we were keeping him till the end of the season

Shame for Webster but opens the door to Emmanuel to have a long run in the team. His chance to nail that position down. If he puts in big performances for the remainder of the season he'll have that shirt next season.

We've been unfortunate with injuries this year. Hopefully we will finally get a few fresh faces in and get some positivity around the place again. Despite the other night I actually feel we are getting better but still need some signings. Get your cheque book out Marcus!

It's a shame McCarthy isn't out for season! Can't someone take him out in training?

I feel sorry for the lad. But with the season over, let's hope we do t bring in a loan to replace him. Permanent player required as Berra will leave in the summer so ideal time to bed in.

I too would like Evans out amongst other things, which I have extrapolated earlier under ' Milne Stay with Mick'
