Colchester Turn Down Town Bid for Winger Dickenson
Monday, 23rd Jan 2017 21:08

TWTD understands that Colchester United have turned down a Town offer for left winger Ben Dickenson.

The 23-year-old has impressed since joining the U’s from Gillingham in the summer and was nominated for the EFL League Two Player of the Month award in August.

A hamstring injury suffered in September sidelined him for six weeks but he returned to action as the U’s - who are currently seventh in League Two - went on a run of nine games without a defeat.

Dickenson, born Brennan but often known as Ben, was with the youth set-ups at Southampton, Poole Town and Christchurch but made his breakthrough into senior football with non-league Dorchester Town.

The busy Ferndown-born winger’s performances for the Magpies caught the eye of Brighton, who signed him for an undisclosed fee in January 2012.

Spells on loan at Chesterfield, AFC Wimbledon and Northampton followed, before he moved on to Gillingham in June 2014 having been unable to break into the Seagulls’ first team.

Despite having become a regular with the Gills, Dickenson, whose valuation is likely to be in the low hundred thousands, was released last summer and joined Colchester on a two-year deal. Since joining the U’s he has made 21 starts and two sub appearances, scoring seven times.

While primarily a left-sided wideman, Dickenson has recently played at left wing-back for Colchester and has also operated as a left-back and up front.

Elsewhere, The Daily Mail claims the Blues and Brentford have both offered £1.5 million to Wigan for midfielder Max Power, who was previously linked with Town earlier in the month.

The Blues are said to have offered better personal terms to the 23-year-old former Tranmere man.

The same paper also reports that Burnley, Cardiff City, Derby County, Newcastle United, Norwich City and Sunderland have all made enquiries to Leicester regarding Town loanee Tom Lawrence.

The 23-year-old is with Town for the season with manager Mick McCarthy having said he will not be leaving Portman Road this month even if the Foxes receive interest in signing him permanently from elsewhere.

Under the terms of his loan Lawrence can’t return to the King Power Stadium in January unless all three parties - the Blues, Leicester and the player himself - agree to it.

The report also claims the Foxes are willing to sell the Wales international for £1 million, which seems highly unlikely.

Meanwhile, Preston North End striker Jordan Hugill says Town’s interest in him is flattering.

The Blues are understood to have had a £1.5 million bid for the 24-year-old rebuffed by the Lilywhites earlier this month.

“I try to stay out of it, it’s nothing to do with me,” Hugill told the Lancashire Evening Post having scored both goals as his side drew 2-2 at Aston Villa on Saturday.

“It’s flattering but my job’s here. I want to score goals and I want to do well. I play for Preston North End and that’s where my focus is, that’s where I want to be.”

Now to me, these all look fairly positive moves, whether the reports are genuine or not is another matter, but if there is something in it, they're all the right kind of players. Slightly concerning tho if we've not got other options to Hugill for a new striker, so hopefully we have and just keeping cards close to our chests....

we wont get a look in with Lawrence I'm afraid, money talks .seems that a Murphy replacement is going to be out of reach.

As an exiled blue in south Wales I watched Col U at Newport a couple of weeks ago. Dickenson looked ordinary, good turn of pace but poor distribution and no end product. We'd be better off going after Kurtis Guthrie, talented attacking midfielder who goes at defences... everything we don't have. Hands down the best player at Col U right now. Money well spent on the scouts clearly.

£1 for Lawrence seems unlikely.
Unfortunately for us the screening of the Lincoln defeat probably doubled his transfer value.
His agent will be telling him that he will be playing in the PL next season... ...not with us in the Championship.

At least we look as if we are trying to get a few players in and build a young team up. Cant wait before people start moaning about it. Get a few players on the cheap from lower down the leagues and see what happens.

Positive moves despite the lack of money. I am beginning to feel sorry for MM!!
Lots of low cost players may bring in a few diamonds. We did it with Mings. Hey and then the money disappeared. Perhaps its surfacing again to buy some cheap possible stars. I guess this is what we are destined to become. Mid table middlemen passing on quality players to the Premiership. Sad times. I'm just an old sceptic. All I know is that we are heading for yet another year in the Championship as long as we don't lose too many of the up coming games.

Forgive me for stating the obvious, but if he is worth it increase the bid. At least it may mean that Freddie Sears can be played as a centre forward - his natural position.

And £1m for Lawrence would be a bargain,

Wait a minute...if we've offered personal terms to Power does that mean they have accepted the bid? Surely you can't offer a deal until the team accepts?

We do seem to be linked with lots of wingers. I thought a quality central midfielder and striker would be our priorities? Our course, decent young wingers also would be much appreciated with Lawrence set to return in the summer and Ward not yet delivering on his early promise.

Even if we could afford Lawrence, there is no way he would join a club that is going absolutely no where under the current regime. He's a premier league player and we are far from a premier league team.

If I was Tom Lawrence I'd be looking at another club to join...hardly setting the world a light at present are we! - highly unlikely to sell to sell him for £1M anyway, to cheap.

Lawrence is worth way more than 1m. Even if we could land either him or Joniesta we still need some pace and power in the central midfield. Forget about strikers the central midfield is the priority and until that is sorted we are going nowhere. Even our best strikers (Crawford, Mariner, Stewart et al) would have struggled if they had to play with the central midfield we have at present .........

Max Power, great magazine from the late 1990s. Especially printed for 18 year old lads with Mk1 VW Golfs with huge exhausts and sub woofers.
Good player too.
