McCarthy: Best Won't Play for Town Again
Thursday, 26th Jan 2017 19:11

Blues boss Mick McCarthy says he has told striker Leon Best that he won’t play for Town again.

Former Ireland international Best, 30, joined the Blues on a deal to the end of the season in August - with an option for a further season - following a trial and has made six starts and six sub appearances without scoring.

“Leon is still at the club but I have told him he won’t play for me again,” McCarthy told the club site.

“I took him on when we lost Murph. He came in and trained really well. He impressed everyone. He was in the right place at the right time but he has not done it since though.

“That is my view. I’m sure Leon has a different one. Football is all about opinions but it’s mine that counts here.

“I told him after the Lincoln game that he is not part of my plans here. He’s still with us and may have to have something done with his groin. We will see but he won’t be playing for us.”

Meanwhile, McCarthy says there have been no further developments regarding the extension of anyone's contract with skipper Luke Chambers and fellow centre-half Christophe Berra among a number of players whose deals include options for further seasons, as are Best, Giles Coke and Paul Digby as well as youngsters Kundai Benyu, Michael Crowe, James Blanchfield, George Fowler, Jacob Marsden, Monty Patterson, Shane McLoughlin and Chris Smith.

“There’s nothing happening with contracts," McCarthy said. "And when you analyse that, if you sit down and think about it, when a club’s got options on them, that’s exactly what it is.

"It’s an option to take it up, up until the date that option runs out. And that’s just what we’ll do.”

Jonathan Douglas is out of contract at the end of the season, an option in his deal having been triggered at the end of last year, as is young defender Joe Robinson.

No loss(apart from his wages) he gave the impression that he wasn't bothered the minute he walked into the building in his vest!!!!

Mick may regret this post. The club is so short on strikers that Best is bound to get opportunities to get back into the first team. Not much forward thinking going on.

The most predictable TWTD article of the year, you only needed to read other fans' opinions of him to realise the type of character he was.

It certainly is a Blessing for DINO and us fans, that the teams close to us also lost lost last week, otherwise the table would have been looking very sick for us. ???
But wether Dino can Motivate his players for this very Important game is going to be a challenge ??
As long as he do not keep praising the opposition and there manager, (which is an awful Habit of his)

Is this the BEST scapegoat Mick can find to cover up his own managerial shortcomings? Best wasn't the only 1 on the pitch against Lincoln! There were others that night equally as bad! And did your mate Warnock recommend you a lemon Mick as I recall you saying how Neil had told you that Best was a great value solution in wake of Murphy's departure. Something has obviously happened behind the scenes, maybe Leon told Mick he's a crap manager and he didn't like it! Maybe he had more balls than half the other players that dare not rock the boat as they're know they've got a good thing going under Mick! If Mick was to get the chop I honestly can't see many Championship teams queuing up to take our deadwood. Some will have to drop a division or two (or even 3 or 4!), and maybe Mick needs to as well!

If based purely on Lincoln it seems harsh. If he's shown a bad attitude elsewhere then fair enough.

Nice to see we are getting tough for once and I applaud this decision.

This guy played for 5 mts, agains Villa when he came on and could easily have got a couple of goals----perhaps if he had things would be so different?

Mick took a gamble and hindsight is a wonderful thing!

He's always been a bit of a joke. Big money moves based on absolutely nothing. Was never going to work out really.

The good side of this story is McCarthy has obviously seen the light with Best, the downside is, he brought him in and Town been paying his wages .

When poor attitude overshadows ability, it stops you wanting to work. Good thing we didn't sign McCormack, the now tubby Villa striker.

Only another 6 players to get shot f now Mick. You could imagine what Leon was thinking as he walked off the pitch @ Lincoln "How are you supposed to do anything with no support or service". In part I feel he is being made the scape goat because there are a few other players who have been found out yet often appear in the starting 11. Maybe we should spin the revolving door and now get shot of Sears , McGoldrick , Douglas, Bru , Bishop, Skuse, Berra, and Knudson because nothing much is happening on the pitch these days. Would rather replace that lot with 5 hungry and talented young players released from Premiership clubs.

he wasnt the only 1 rubbish v Lincoln seems a bit harsh to me, its not like Freddy has played any better recently, or does running around but not actually creating anything count for what these days? the woeful service from our non existent midfield, even harry kane would struggle to score goals in our side, every striker needs service!

....... as they used to say (some will remember) 'feed the Goat and he will score' - agree with 'happybeingblue' very harsh on Best - Strikers need service, and what little opportunity he had, he certainly had no service.

More likely that McCarthy wanted him to be another 'holding midfielder' or defender ........ and he had the audacity to disagree with the bully in the bunch........ as we know that is NOT allowed with the Dinosaur.

The problems will always be there whilst McCarthy is still there.

......... will the Dinosaur ever realise players have to be played to their strengths ........ Answer: NO.

Best was very poor against Lincoln, whose defenders had him on toast and he did not respond positively or even seem to try to respond and put a shift in for the team. That performance of course was a disaster for Town and especially a disaster for Best (anyone wanting him after seeing that must be desperate). Still quite a strange story to go to press and again not very positive, but at least we know he won't put another poor performance in for Town. Let's hope his replacement (whever that will be) does better (be hard not to really though!)...COYB!!
