High Court Rules in Town's Favour
Tuesday, 28th Feb 2017 15:39

A High Court judge has ruled that Suffolk Constabulary should repay Town for overcharging for matchday policing in the second part of the ongoing litigation between the club and the police.

In July last year Mr Justice Green ruled that the police were entitled to charge Town for policing two roads bordering the ground on matchdays (Portman Road and Sir Alf Ramsey Way), a ruling which the club were granted permission to appeal. "

In his latest ruling, which concerns policing outside the stadium and those two roads, Mr Justice Green has found that Suffolk Constabulary had no power to charge the club and that Town have a right to recover the sums they paid plus simple interest, although covering a limited period rather than the extended time the Blues argued.

A Suffolk Constabulary spokesman told TWTD: “This is a complex judgement clarifying the time limitations and liabilities that can be applied by either party, depending on the result of the appeal by Ipswich Town Football Club against the original High Court judgement last year.

“The appeal is scheduled to be heard on 27/28th June 2017. Due to the ongoing legal process, it is not appropriate for the Constabulary to comment any further at this time.”

Town told TWTD in a statement: “This is part of an ongoing legal process and we will not be making any comment at this time.”

Never had these problems with Suffolk Constabulary in the past - if I were them I would tell the Club where to go and wash my hands on them.

I wonder who would sort the prevailing mess out then ... ? - a few people would think twice before bringing the kids along to games for sure.
Agreed, most fans are sensible, and act accordingly - but there will always be an unruly element in society, and every reason to believe it may increase in the future ... !!! ..... just look at what else is currently going on around the town - you only have to read to local newspaper.

Good no excuse for Evans not to spend more in the summer. No excuse.

This reflects poorly on our club.

Taking money from the already empty pockets of Suffolk Constabulary only serves to highlight the nasty nature of those in charge at Ipswich Town.

BTW, it should be 'Mr. Justice Green', not 'Justice Green'. Might be seen as disrespectful to write otherwise.

This is probably a win for the lawyers rather than the club or police.

I think the point is intelligence led policing. The first role of the police is public safety and they therefore put more officers out on match days. They don't charge concerts if they put on extra patrols or night clubs etc for having extra officers on duty on weekend nights in town.

They have always & still do charge football clubs for police required in the stadium but with cuts in their budgets they are trying to get some more money in the coffers. Wrong in my view & well done to the club for challenging it.

Some people on here. The club feel they are being overcharged. They are questioning the legality of it, as any well run business would. In fact as any person would if they felt they were being overcharged. It doesnt put anybody in 'bad light' it protects the costs to the club. The negativity on here to every single news story is absolutely pathetic.

Common sense is no longer common with some people - no names mentioned ........ just read between the lines.

Perhaps we should have a court ruling if Blueboy really is a blues fan as he never has a decent thing to say about them if he does there's always some forms of inuendo attached strange fella.

Wallingford Boy the EADT puts figure of £200k actually ruled in Evans favour, think this is being appealed though by Suffolk Constabulary, who I think have also made a counter claim.

As Groundhog says the lawyers will come out best,,as they generally due unless its no win,no fee;and at the end of the day wonder if Evans or the Police will benefit to any degree.

Mr Evans initially I think upset the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis people many years ago to do with ticket touting;and since then has also had spats with The Rugby,Athletics,Olympic authorities and now the Police;so unlike bohslegend and Swn98 I feel that blueboy has a point.

Anyway don't like ITFC supporters bitching at each other, think it is pointless and childish.
