Lawrence Returns But Skuse Still Out
Thursday, 6th Apr 2017 15:16

Blues top scorer Tom Lawrence will return to the squad for Saturday’s trip to Fulham, but midfielder Cole Skuse remains sidelined with the concussion he suffered during Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Birmingham.

Lawrence, who has scored 11 times during his loan spell from Leicester, has missed the last two games as well as Wales international duty with a groin problem.

“Tom Lawrence looks like he’s fine, he’s trained fully today and he’s looked in good shape, but Skusey won’t be available,” manager Mick McCarthy said.

“I just think he’s not been completely headache free, I think he has just been brutally honest and admitted to it. We can’t take that risk, it’s not on.

“Generally it is two weeks unless they’re completely clear. And we don’t want to take any risks, he’s been fantastic Skusey. Rule is he can’t play.”

With Jonathan Douglas, Teddy Bishop and Andre Dozzell all at his disposal, McCarthy says he’s well covered in central midfield.

“They’re fit and the lads who played the other night played very well,” he added. “We’ve got cover for Skusey. He’s been pretty much ever present unless he’s been injured, which is the case again. But we’re all right, we’ve got midfield players.”

Skuse absence means Mick has to keep the same midfield.
I did fear he'd bring him back.
I have no problem with Skuse, he's much maligned on this site.
But he shouldn't be an automatic pick, no one should be if we genuinely want to progress.

No need to change the midfield from Tuesday in my opinion... certainly not to include one that played last Saturday, anyway.
Having Lawrence back is a good thing though, to get what we can out of him whilst we've got him.

Here's to our first back-to-back wins of the season...

Why do I get a horrible feeling this means Dougie will be back on Saturday.

Stick with the midfield from Tuesday night all three of them looked like they wanted to go forward when we had the ball. I think we are nearly safe now so we should go to Fulham and try and get a positive performance out of everyone.

I will probably get stick for saying this but I wouldn't bring Lawrence back either been a brilliant player for us but he's not the future. Nobody from Tuesday deserves to be dropped although mick will probably come out and say they can't play two games in five days!

Hopefully the team that started the second half will start again, with Lawrence a great option to bring on!

Obviously we'd all love another win, however I'm betting on another 1-1

Never do I like to hear a player miss games through injury, but we are a better team without Skuse. It'll be a tough game at Fulham but keep the same team and see what happens!

Win / win. Just not having Skuse in the team gives us a massive leg up, even if no-one replaces him.

So who will be dropped to allow Lawrence back in?;Not sure I'd change the team tbh

The only was I can see the team changing is by dropping Lawrence into the 10 role behind seats and mcgoldrick, take out grant Ward. You can't drop sears after two goals when he's got in the team and taken his chance

Alternatively revert back to a 4-3-3 with Taylor missing. With sears Lawrence and Mcgoldrick up top and the team remains the same from tuesday

If you think Skuse has been fantastic that is the reason we are low mid table wouldn't get anywhere near playing for any of the sides near or in the playoffs .
Also why mention Bishop and Dozzell who don't even get in squad but yet both featured in our best spell of the season before disappearing , is it time for the I want to promote the youngsters rubbish we had at the end of last season and then pick Skuse and Douglas as soon as the new season starts

Mick rarely changes a winning team so Lawrence will not start, Tommy Smith for Taylor. Mick will still play like we are not safe.

Good news on both fronts then.

I see elsewhere that McCarthy still seems to think that he's going to ge here next season - stating that Taylor will be offered a deal if he proves himself in pre-season & also having a go at fans who are questioning Skuse's "contribution" to the team - Mick still thinks Skuse has been outstanding since day 1.

Unbelievable Jeff.

Stick with the same team. Sears and McGoldrick played really well together Tuesday, so I see no point in splitting that partnership up to bring back Lawrence (who has not played well with McGoldrick and his best form was several weeks ago).

I have been on of Skuse's biggest critics and still reckon he should be on the bench at best! but I would not wish a head injury(or any other injury) on any of our players.

Admittedly we only beat an extremely poor a Wigan, but what was quite clear is we certainly don't need Dougie nor for that matter Skuse.

Good on both fronts.

But tom must be on the bench our starting line up should how we attack Fulham with smith in for Taylor

I am now getting really concerned. Our manager is now talking longer term ....as if ME has given him the thumbs up if we stay up. A significant majority of supporters do not want this. Irrespective of season ticket sales how do we get this message across to the owner? If we can get safe over the Easter weekend here is an idea...for the last home match of the season use social media to say if you attend this game you support the manager to carry on. An attendance of less than 10000 may finally get the message loud and clear and ME may think again.

The ways things go dropping Sears or McGoldrick wont be a big deal.. Mix it up a bit I say, we haven't enough games left for decent run in

Difficult one. Does McCarthy drop either Sears or McGoldrick to bring Lawrence back in or can he play the three of them together? It would be very unfair on Freddie and Didzy.

That would mean dropping either Ward or Huws so he has a difficult decision to make for Fulham.

I think that the following line up could take it to Fulham:
Bart
Spence Chambers Smith Kenlock
Ward Diagouraga Huws Lawrence
Sears McGoldrick

The balance of that side is virtually 3 defenders and 7 capable of attack but of course MMs old favourite (and proper bloke) Berra would be on bench. Hard to see MM doing that. Suspect that Lawrence might be on bench and bought on a bit after half time. I have always liked Chambers and Smith together in central defense and was disappointed when they were broken up to accomodate Berra who has been fairly average this season and likely to go in the summer.

I'm sorry that Skuse is unwell BUT he's past his best and this gives the side another chance to show that they can play better without him. Trouble with MM is that he's so fixed in his ways but has been shown when he's got no option to change team that it does work.
Not sure about Dave but this game will test him and if he comes through with flying colours he could get contract.
Got to keep same forwards they deserve it and by all means use Tom as sub.
