Town Take Up Option on Gerken's Contract
Friday, 7th Apr 2017 17:54

Town have taken up a one-year option on keeper Dean Gerken’s contract, which was otherwise set to end this summer. Gerken will now remain at Portman Road until the end of June 2018.

The 31-year-old, who was interesting Cardiff City during the January transfer window, has made 91 appearances for the Blues since joining the club on trial after leaving Bristol City in the summer of 2013.

This season the one-time Colchester United glovesman has made four appearances, one in the Championship.

Good news this, Gerken is a good goalkeeper and will definitely keep Bart on his toes and will provide good cover incase of injury to Bart.

Personally not sure about this, not good enough to be number 1, too expensive to be number 2, detrimental to the young keepers at the club and we have the option to bring in emergency keepers outside of the windows if required.

Good news, while not in Bialkowski's league he is a decent backup keeper and better than some of our first choice keepers over the Keane and Jewell years.

I wonder whether we will similarly take up the options on Berra and Chambers?

> too expensive to be number 2

If that were the case we wouldn't have taken the option. Dean was second choice at relegated Bristol City when we signed him, so his wages can't be that pricey.

Decent back up. No more or less. Can't imagine he's on big money.

Let's hope this doesn't mean Barts gonna be the seasonal cash cow.

I don't understand why half of all modern goalies seem happy to be paid not to play : Richard Wright threw his career away in this manner, and Gerken is just one of dozens more that are doing the same. He should find himself a club that wants him to play : almost certainly at a lower level.

Fine as a back up but is only really league 1 standard and is miles off what Bart is! Not sure why mick constantly bigs gerken up but they he does that for a lot of bang average players at this club.

He is a fantastic shot stopper, lacks commanding his area and kicking otherwise he's be right up there with Bart. With the current financials we might have to accepted loosing Bart to keep us operating in the red for the year. Would not let him go for anything less than £6 million and only to a premier league team.

To clarify i meant more expensive than 1 of the kids. I appreciate he can help with passing on experience, pushing Bart etc. With Bart in exceptional form this season, we could have had Crowe on the bench all season and it wouldn't have cost us any points. Bit of a gamble I accept but with the emergency loans less so.

I don't think Wright throw his career away. He couldn't even get a contract with us towards the end. He then sat out his last few years with the league champions.. Have u seen the photos of him chilling with Kevin hart and the such like? Better than my life!
