McCarthy Frustrated By Failure to Take Chances
Saturday, 8th Apr 2017 18:14

Boss Mick McCarthy was frustrated that his side was unable to take their chances during their 3-1 defeat at Fulham. Town spurned a number of opportunities to get themselves back into the game at 2-0 and then conceded the Cottagers third which all but sealed the home side’s victory.

“It’s frustrating really because we’ve had good chances and certainly in the second half we had three great chances before they scored,” McCarthy said.

“Unfortunately, probably the tale of our season, we didn’t score them and we let one in the other end.”

Was the difference between the teams the ability to take chances? “I’d say so, a big part of it anyway. They didn’t defend particularly well either.

“Their keeper [Marcus Bettinelli], I’m sure Slavisa thinks it was a good decision to change him because of the performance they got out of him.”

He added: “We had our chances in the first half and we had our chances in the second half.”

David McGoldrick’s chance just before the break which hit the post was a key moment, McCarthy admitted.

“Quite clearly we would have all felt better and the players certainly would [coming in at the break],” he said.

“And the reality is that we should have scored after half-time because we did have good chances. But their keeper’s made good saves and we’ve not managed to score.”

McCarthy switched the Blues to 4-4-2 at half-time, bringing Tom Lawrence on for defender Tommy Smith, and felt it gave his side momentum or down to Fulham taking their foot off the gas given their lead.

“It did [give us momentum], I’ll have a look at it, whether [it was that] they gave the ball away, they thought they were comfortable and we pressed it,” he added.

“I didn’t think we were bad in the first half, we just gave away two really soft goals, certainly the second one. But good finishes from them. I changed it, it needed to be changed to get something out of the game.”

He added: “They put Chris Martin in so they’d got an option to knock the ball long. They did and I don’t think we dealt with that particularly well. He’s a threat up there, he can win balls and keep it up there. I guess Slav got his tactics right today.

“They’re a good team. There are two choices, you either try and stop them playing and push up on top of them, which we did. And they didn’t pass through us from the back.

“What they did was put it up to Martin and he knocked it down to midfield and they got their chances from that.”

McCarthy stuck with the same side which beat Wigan on Tuesday, aside from Tommy Smith replacing the injured Steven Taylor, but says they came up against much stiffer opposition.

“They were a much different, much better team, a harder venue to play at. As has been proved all season for them, they’re a really good side.

“That’s the dilemma, change that winning team and we lose and it’s ‘Why did you change it?’.

“Don’t change a winning a team and it’s ‘Should we have rested someone?’. I don’t think we looked tired, not at all, and I thought Didzy and Freddie were a constant threat yet again.

“I think you’ve seen me now for almost five years and if we’ve played well and had a good result it’s very rare [that I change it]. It’s hard to justify it. They weren’t tired, they weren’t tired at all. They’ve taken their chances and we haven’t in the end.”

One positive was the return of Tom Lawrence following his groin injury: “It’s great to have him back, you could see he’s a threat with his delivery.

“Although even he got booed when he put one out with his first freekick but the second was on the button and Berra scores. Unfortunately it was a little bit too late.”

The large Town following again made their frustrations with McCarthy and owner Marcus Evans clear during the second half. How did their chanting make him feel on the touchline? “It made me think I’m going to go home and have a beer.”

Slavisa Jokanovic was pleased with his side's display, although admitted they didn't have it all their own way.

“Today we showed the character and our ambition and played with confidence. We scored three goals and we could have scored some more goals," he said.

"To be honest we were in some kind of trouble during the game but this time we knew better how to survive these moments.

“We should have finished the game with a clean sheet, we were so close, at the end they scored the goal and I’m not sure if the situation was legal or illegal. But generally I am happy.

Marcus Evans out......really? ?? This is the man who has invested over £100m, after previous poor management took us into administration. He continues to invest £6m a year just to cover our losses. There is something called FFP, tho so many clubs choose to ignore it.
Parachute payments make it a completely unever playing field.

@blueharmony - 6 million a year isn't enough with the inability of this manager, that's the whole point. And, 6 million is a pittance to him. Stop swallowing the PR.

LMAO! The smirky Dino being DELUDED as ever!!! ... I.E. now claiming that failure to score on our chances probably is: "The Tale of our Season"???!!! WTF???!!! LMAO!

Hmmmm "dearest" über shrewd wannabe Miss Marple-like self-perceived Football Genius havn't you CONVENIENTLY forgot all about:
A) the innumerous previous games this season where we had 1,2 or if us fans were being really "spoiled" as many as 3 shots on goal all game (with quite often "most" of these "lofty" number of remotely quality finishes coming past say the 77 minute mark btw)???
B) all the overwhelmingly number of times King Bart has saved us, either a sizable amount of by now (game 41) very very precious looking points and not-to-rarely unmistakably FORTUITOUS points too btw!, or like today (where we beside from being well out-shot and out-possessed, also were out-passed 80%-66% in the 'Pass Success' category -- wonder what exactly that would have looked like with either or both of WhatsMyExSkuse & Snooze Doggy Douglas on for 95 minutes today? lol -- and also of special interest giving our still fairly intact Hoof-susceptibility lost the 'Aerials Won' battle category 60%-40%) from a serious clobbering looking more like a tennis score???

............ Ohhhh and just don't even bother to answer or in some other much more pathetic way counter this one 'Micky The Snouse', as I & every other objective & non-complacent fan here on TWTD and elsewhere, i.e. those with their heads NOT deeply buried in the sand thus basically voluntarily turning themselves into 'See No Evil & Hear no Evil' Muppets or Simpletons, already are perfectly well aware of the one and only truthful take to the above!

So, rather "just" Get Lost this summer!, will you pleaZzze???, you sorry-a@s travesty of a 'Modern Day' forward thinking football manager and last but not least undebatable beyond deluded & suffering from severe 'Delusion of Grandeur' extremely obnoxious Yorkshire prat! Just Get lost, pleaZzze!!!

Just a thought, have you aired your frustrations with your very learned assistant? You know the one, the clubs striking coach who's also part of the unemployable gravy train

Once we are safe then ME should send MM on his way. Hopefully mean that over Easter it will be sorted and then a new man can come and give the club and all the supporters a much needed lift.

Says a lot for his players when week in and week out we hear the same old story, " we did not take our chances", seems to me that they could not hit the wall of a barn if they were standing inside it

It is because of idiots like Blueharmony tat we are in the state we are in, are you so gullible that you can't see Evan is running the club into the ground. Has not the Cresswell, Mings, Murphy money not being invested told you anything, and if it was true he is putting in 6 million a year just ask yourself why is he here if that is all he is prepared to put in. I don't give a tuppenny damn how much Keane and Jewell wasted Boring Billy McCarthy has had 5 years here now and any committed owners would have had him out months ago. And before you bleat about playoffs in 2015, were we not in the playoffs by Derbys failure to win at home on the final day. Give me strength

Blue harmony - don't believe that twaddle! Evans bought a debt for a fraction! Yes, he has added to it, but equally has claimed large interest payments on the full amount, which is mainly owed to him! The six million is also a red herring. Two years ago he made a six million profit! The guy is unambitious and doesn't care.

Jas, for someone so clever you can be so naive. As you say ME bought the club with a crippling, possibly a terminal debt situation. Yes he bought off the Norwich Union debt incurred in the development of the North Stand at a huge discount and kept the full value of the debt on the club's books. All reasonable business practice. The club as a PLC is owned by the Marcus Evans Group and, as a subsidiary of the ME Group relies on its support to be financially viable. As an entity in its own right the club is not independently financially viable and could well be allowed to go bust at any time. This is a liability attached to the ME Group. The fact is that any investment in the club is now above and beyond what anyone could reasonably expect and ambition is not a factor.

At the end of the day Marcus Evans gambled on a club with realistic possibilities. For whatever reason the gamble has failed. He is now seriously poorer and our hopes and expectations are massively reduced. His football acumen might be challenged but the financial support he has provided surely can't.

Anyone who thinks selling Murphy is the only reason why we are 17th in the second tier is deluded Murphy had one good year which made MMs record here slightly less awful . MM has failed again like he does at every club , one trick pony hideously out of date

Jas, I recall reading that Marcus ceased collecting interest on the debt quite a while ago.
My preference is for our owner to be more visible, engaging and transparent. However, Marcus was clear about the terms of engagement at the outset so we have to accept and respect that. There was not exactly a long queue of prospective owners.

Way way. While not into name calling i think you'll find ur the idiot if u think Evans is running the club into the ground. Quite the reverse, without him we wouldnt have a club to support. The £6m he puts in is just the money to sustain the debt. Has nothing to do with the transfer budget. Every penny of the cresswell money ( only had £3.75m so far) and the mings money has been reinvested. Not on transfer fees maybe but on agents fees signing on fees wages etc. As for the Murphy money? We've got £3m so far and spent over £2m of that signing Best on a free, plus Williams and Lawrence on loan in January. U cant even get The number of years McCarthy has been here right. This is his 4th year not his 5th. Do I like you want Evans to do More? Yes but I think we have to accept that we simply haven't got ne spare money to splash out on players big time. At the end of the day Evans has set out a plan which includes bringing youngsters through to be part of our future. But McCarthy won't play them. Every time he tells us a youngster is close to the 1st team squad he sends him on loan to a nonleague team. The one thing that Evans MUST do is get rid of McCarthy at the end of the season. If not then I may change my opinion on Evans totally but while he may not be doing what many want in spending millions on players, we need to be careful what we wish for. Could easily end up with an owner of the likes of Tan, Oyston or the Venkys. Too many think the way to success is purely through spending money. It's not. Ask Derby fans if spending millions has brought them success? On the reverse side, look at Huddersfield. Brought in a pretty much unknown manager, spent a very modest amount on players and from being favourites this season to be relegated to play-off contention.

Crawfordsboot.. i was at the game and i disagree completely with most of what you say and heres why.

First half we were simply awful, especially that back 5, dont think i have seen a more shambolic excuse of a defence, nobody seemed to know their role or what they were supposed to be doing!

Secondly Fulham played hoofball really? i would be happy to watch that every week! Oh and a long pass is not hoofball, hoofball is kicking it up field without even lifting your head looking for a team mate!

And the game could have been 3 all or 4 all. Bottom line is we lost 3-1.
And a resounding MICK OUT!

Time to say goodbye!

blues1 : McCarthy has been here since November 2012, which is more than 4 years so is therefore in his 5th year ; as soon as he completes 5 years he will then be in his 6th year ; he will therefore be in his 8th year when he finally leaves ...
