McCarthy Manager of EFL's Team of Easter
Wednesday, 19th Apr 2017 10:14

Town boss Mick McCarthy has been named the manager of the EFL’s Team of Easter after the Blues picked up six points out of six over the holiday weekend.

Friday’s 2-1 win at Burton Albion was followed by Monday’s 3-1 vanquishing of promotion-pushing Newcastle United, Town’s first back-to-back victories of the season.

The results have seen the Blues up to 15th and to safety. With three games remaining they have 55 points, 11 above the relegation zone.

Town are next in action at Rotherham on Saturday, before Sheffield Wednesday visit for Portman Road’s final game of the season the following weekend and then the season ends at Nottingham Forest on Sunday 7th May (KO midday).

Deserved. But changes little for me. Doesn't make up for eighteen months of boring negative football.

Team of Easter. Very appropriate. He's been getting crucified all season, but now his team's fortunes are resurrecting. 10 points and 9 goals in half a month !

cat, think your spot on. As a fellow supporter of 41 years I also endured the hoofball tactics whilst it generated results and the hope that he may one day pick a team to play football on the floor. Alas it was not to be and we have witnessed dire football now for over 18 months. I look at my FA Cup final Ticket autographed by the great Sir Bobby Robson and my two UEFA cup final tickets and wonder where did it all go wrong. Well we cant blame MM and ME for that but we can complain about the lack of progress and entertainment they have dished up over the last 18months. I do not always expect to win but do want a little excitement and entertainment when I spend my hard earned cash on a ticket. Guess I am one of the older generation who remember the great times that ITFC want to get rid of so they can peddle the current sh*** they provide and call it Football. Will not be renewing season tickets.

The point made about him actually dragging us out of this is a good one.

Not many managers would have (or indeed wanted to) be in charge of Ipswich after that Lincoln game.

I suppose in that respect, he has turned it around somewhat. I know there have been a few decent spells of football interspersed with some tripe, but we became hard to beat when we needed to and are probably above average on the form table since then.

Credit where it's due, whether you like him or not, there's not many that would have done what he's done under a ridiculous amount of pressure.

I have been a supporter for the past 49 years and we have played different styles off football but football has changed unless we get an investor who gives us cash too invest then we will not see much changers at Portman road.will a younger manger have the connections too be able too bring in good loan signings.we can all identify good players who would help are squad but without money you can forget it.plus I don't like the football that we have been playing this season but I don't need too jump up and down and say I will not go and support the team because without season tickets we will sell to balance the books.

Total deja vous McCarthy -?

Never heard the same comments and frustrations
from those at Sunderland and Wolves -

Your position is untenable as you have divided
the support at this great Club and I don't-think
that you care -

McCarthy Out

Chris Hughton will be so jealous that Mick has scooped this top award.

I hear there's going to be a team/manager of the two Bank holiday mondays in May. Only joking, (i think! ) On a more serious note, whether MM stays or goes, funds need to be provided for strengthening. Along wih some promising youngsters (if given the chance), things might take a positive turn next season. I speak as someone who no longer attends games (nothing to do with the current situation), but did so for a few decades (including the very best, and the less so!) If i may pass an opinion on MM, it's based on overall performance over the years, not just recently. For me, he's what you would call a "firefighter" . There's few better in the country for getting teams out of the mire, (with or without money) but further progress is not so easily acheivable. Yes, i know he got Wolves and Sunderland up, but i'm looking at his record as a whole. If he stays and he's given some reasonable funds to work with, it will be very interesting to see the results. Then i think a final judgement can be passed.

So it's taken 43 games for Mick to get 2 wins on the bounce and now he's flavour of the month again! Some fans are very easily pleased! Surely if we had of played better line ups throughout the season we wouldn't of had to wait nearly so long for 2 wins on the bounce! Unbelievable!
In Mick's defence (I'm playing devils advocate here) we were so much better against Newcastle, but my argument is that we could of looked like that a lot more this season if he had of got us to press further up the field against other lesser teams than Newcastle and thus invited the players to play more attacking and fluent football.

It would be interesting to plot a line chart in order to see our league position every week since Mick has taken charge as that way it will give a good overall trend of our progress (or lack of progress) during his tenure. In essence the chart would clearly show the full picture of Mick's league performance from start to finish. Usually if you invest in a stock you are looking for a healthy or reasonable uptrend or at least some momentum in an upward trajectory. If a chart is paddling sideways for long periods it indicates inertia and doesn't fill one with confidence. Any chance of plotting such a chart Phil please (only if anybody else thinks it's a good idea to help give some balance to this debate) or if not where could I get the weekly data to show where we have been in the league each week since Mick started here so I can plot one in Excel myself? That might just help shed some further light on things and add to the argument one way or the other.
I just want to see what the data shows and if chart looks more healthy than I expect it will then I'll hold my hand up and say Mick has done a better job than I have given him credit for. But only as and when the hard data shows me as much. You can't judge a manager in one weekend, we need more clarity and for that we need to look at the bigger picture. Let's zoom out some and judge him on his whole performance from start to finish since he's been here in order to get some better perspective.

It would be awesome to construct such a chart on this site Phil to compare between the managers as well. I'd very much like to see for example say how Magilton compares to somebody like Paul Jewell. A simple line chart showing weekly league positions under each manager would be the simplest way to draw valid comparisons on who has been the most consistent. I realise this isn't something that could be done overnight but I think it would be a welcome addition to the site. Just an idea to consider please. No major rush or urgency. Cheers Phil.

Try not to get drawn into discussions with illiterate people cat. They will never understand you. Rest assured that the majority of us do understand you though, and do agree with your sentiments.

8.don't play with two defensive midfield players
9. have a plan b

@walberblue

Spot on.

Laughable how so many are clambering over themselves to kiss Mick's bottom now that he's masterminded 2 wins on the spin.

so that's one in the eye for the McCarthy doubters and outers. Mick has won a feckin Easter egg , I'm sure it must have been a ''SMARTIES ''egg, ,he is different class.

Absolutely spot on midastouch, you need to see the wood as a whole and not just the individual trees. A bit like people who like to quote percentages from a very small data sample. I suspect such a chart would be up and down, then more flatlining towards the end. Could be surprised though! A comparison with the other three ex managers in ME's time would indeed be very interesting.
