McCarthy and Evans Set to Meet to Discuss Future Plans Ahead of Busy Summer
Thursday, 20th Apr 2017 14:57

Town boss Mick McCarthy has a meeting planned with owner Marcus Evans where they will discuss their plans going forward and says “there’s every chance” that it’ll be a busy summer of comings and goings at Portman Road.

He says the planning for next season now starts in earnest with the Blues having confirmed their Championship status for a 16th season by beating Newcastle United 3-1 at Portman Road on Monday.

“It’s been tentative before being completely safe,” he said. “I’ll sit down and talk to Marcus now about what we want to do, what he wants to do, what I want to do. And hopefully we can come up with something.

“But there’s a real opportunity to freshen it up because there are a lot of players out of contract and we’ve quite a few players on loan.

“Do they want to stay? Do we want them? Can we have them? Can we sign them? There will be all those things. We’ll be losing a few players.”

McCarthy says he expects a busy summer - “There’s every chance” - once he has talked to Evans but wouldn’t be drawn on when that meeting will take place.

“When I sit down and talk to him,” he said. “There is a date, I’m just not telling you because you’d be in my earhole then asking me what’s happening. You’ll find out what’s happening as opposed to when it’s happening and when we’re discussing it.

McCarthy says he hasn’t had a chance to talk to any players about contracts or options on their deals since Monday: “No, because we’ve not been in. This is the first day back.”

Newcastle aside it's been a poor, no dire, season. The football club needs a shake up. If McCarthy stays - which seems nailed on - then the other issue of lack of proper investment in the playing squad needs to be seriously addressed.

The loans will go. Doubtful many, if any will be signed. Perhaps Huws, but wages could be an issue. Berra almost certain to depart, so essential a new centre half is signed. Two if Chambers goes. They can't be cheap frees or loans either.

Deadwood needs off loading. Douglas and Coke for example.

So yes, big Summer ahead. Over to you Mr Evans.

MICK IS STAYING that is obvious so lets just hope they actually do mean they are rebuilding this year and not more PIE IN THE SKY nonsense that fans have been fed in recent transfer windows. Bart and Dids are our only sellable players (ASSETS)
not at all bothered if anyone else moves on tbh as you have to judge the season as a whole and not just 1 good performance from Monday. Lawrence will return to leicester which is obvious as well, think Bishop should be sent out on loan at league 1 see if he is actually any good or just a 5 game a season player.

Been here before! Not holding my breath and certainly not expecting ME to splash the cash. So we prepare for ANOTHER season under Mick, perhaps? If that is to be the case, I'm expecting more of the same, pre season in Ireland, loads of Irish lads linked, no one signed, late loanees! Hope I'm wrong, oh god how I hope I'm wrong!!!

Our club is in a shambles so let's keep the muppet in charge for another defensive season bumming up all other teams and playing a defensive wall every week. Mick u are are tosh and a complete stubborn muppet... sorry but another dark preseason ahead yet again. Sad sad days... and now all you Mick supporters will come out from behind your walls and bum the manager yet again and say it's not his fault?? When you do please remind me who actually picks the team and sets them up to play?? At least we will agree on one thing Mick picks the team and how they play!!!

I can't believe i am reading this tripe. After everything we have sat through for more than 18 months (I don't know where this 18 months comes from it's been way longer than that), as someone mentioned before, this was supposed to be his best team this season, turned out to be his worst so now he's gonna get 'another' go. How does he think this is not his fault in anyway???? Just can't believe he is still sat comfortably in his seat just because of 'one' yes 'one' surprising result, all other results have been expected or terribly disappointing. Beggars belief. Mick out! And will stick to my guns based on his arrogance and job history which isn't as good as some of his believers think it is. He is not the Messiah!

Very interesting time ahead.Just ashame we cannot hold on to Tom.we cannot guarantee the other loan players will want to stay as well,or if we can afford them yet.
I would really like to hear from the owner first as to his intentions for next season, and what investment there will be.

Heard this all before, season after season. Expect Bart sold, 1 signing and a few last minute loans!
Probably don't need to splash too much, just get the right players playing in the right positions and let other teams worry about us.
Not set up to nullify the other team every week!

Refreshing to read a lot of the above comments. If the Dino remains then it's going to be more of the same. Mick sets his teams up to be hard to beat, stifling games and defensive set ups are all part of this make up This is his METHOD both in domestic and international levels and always has been, so anyone who thinks this will change are throughly deluded.

Like an earlier poster,I am surprised at how little the owner gets involved the club.

He never attends any events or meetings as far as I know, and can recall last close season Mick saying he would be playing in a golf tournament in Portugal with Mr Evans, and hoped to have a word with him !At least he is going to have a face to face meeting with his boss;but expect he will have to go over to Ireland,as he has previously or on Marcus' yacht;although that's no hardship to the Yorkshireman!

This arms length association with the club he owns smacks at a disinterested owner to me. In sharp contrast to what we have had in the past.Evans 10 years being the lowest in attainment of any decade of the six I have been supporting my beloved Town.

So old Big Mouth is going to lose half his playing squad, his best 5 players and with no additional budget from ME is going to rebuild the 1st team for a top six finish????

Really, is that how you're to sell season tickets over the summer???

And Newcastle were absolutely rubbish on Saturday, Rotherham will give Ipswich a harder game at the weekend. Newcastle were pathetic, Stick that in your easter manager award pipe and smoke it, Mick.

I for one cannot wait for the season to end and see whether MM stays or goes, it should be the latter.
I can then be entertained by all the players we are linked with and all the people on this site moaning that they are too old, too young or no experience.
Regardless of what is said on this site it will make no difference to who we sign and how much we should pay for them.
Bring it on.

SO we need to clear the deadwood from the club freshen things up here's a start - TAXI for Mick the stubborn. Mr Evans 2 things you should have learnt this season _no 1 we're going nowhere under the management of Mick the stubborn and no2 look around the once proud stadium we are not customers we are the life and soul of this club I perceive you as someone who does not care anymore with 2 years of poor football overpriced tickets and now a price increase along with total contempt for our under 10 and over 60 supporters enough is enough be bold sack MM employ somebody with vision and give us something to be optimistic about. Lastly MrEvans were you at the Newcastle game shows lower the prices play attacking football the ground was fairly full the atmosphere was good the fans were happy and I bet you sold more pies, drinks and programmes than at any other game - it's not rocket science is it

This sums things up, McCarthy is going to meet Evans, If he had any interest in the club Evans should be at Portman Road at least one day every week. That is the root of the problem, absent faceless owners who don't give a damn as long as they can incorporate the clubs losses in the PLC balance sheet and offset against the tax bill. There will be no investment and players will be sold to compensate for the loss of season ticket revenue. And Boring Billy McCarthy will still be here tnis time next year with the club hovering just above the relegation zone. Depressing isn't it

Maybe Chambers staying will depend on what League Forest are in next season.

Could be When Nottingham came in Ipswich said no because of Webster/ Tommy Smiths injury problems but he wanted to go back to the Nottingham area on prob a bigger pay deal and a three year contract ? With Spencer and Jonas both able to play in the middle could be Mick & Chambers see that it is time to part Co.

I myself would like Chambers to stay

As cat says above McCarthy sets his teams up to stifle teams - problem is he ends up stifling his own team in the process.

He's been doing that season after season for 25 years but people still employ him...nevermind hey,we win 2 games in a row and suddenly he's the best manager around again?

And as for people keeping on about the last 18 months being dire - the last 8 seasons has been dire - not had a manager with the desire to play good football since Jim was sacked.

It's incredible - we beat a shaky Newcastle on a day inspired by Sir Bobby and Mick seems to think that everything's alright again - absolutely deluded.

If Marcus is determined to take us to the premiership and have a successful club(as the spin merchants tell us) then he should take note of other clubs who have employed our great manager and sacked him when it became obvious he is a one trick pony(you soon got shot of Keano and jewell) so why are you sticking with a man who up to now(apart from a Derby collapse getting us into the play offs) is taking us down instead of upwards??????
