Steijn: I'm on List of Possible New Ipswich Bosses
Monday, 1st May 2017 17:34

VVV-Venlo manager Maurice Steijn understands he is on a list of potential new Town bosses but hasn’t heard anything from the club and says it’s likely he’ll still be with his current club next season.

Steijn, 43, who saw VVV to the Jupiler League (Dutch second tier) title this season, was first mentioned in connection with the Blues early in April when his agent said he was aware of rumours linking his client with Town but said there had been no contact.

Later in the month, the former ADO Den Haag midfielder and manager subsequently added that he hadn’t spoken to the Blues.

Now, speaking to Dutch TV channel Omroep West, Steijn says he has been told he is on a list of potential successors to current Town boss Mick McCarthy.

“I know there is a list of possible new coaches for Ipswich Town,” he said. “I'm on that list.

“A couple of English journalists called me and confirmed that. But as long as I don't hear anything, it is not an option. It’s most likely therefore that I will still be working at VVV next year.”

Steijn is contracted to VVV for another season with talks regarding an extension having taken place.

However, his current deal includes a clause allowing him to depart if a bigger club comes calling and he doesn't rule out moving on: "I'm open to a departure."

In January, Town boss McCarthy said he would make a decision on whether to stay at Portman Road in the summer, which may have led the Blues to look at potential options if he decided to move on.

However, while MD Ian Milne said on Saturday that the former Millwall, Republic of Ireland, Sunderland and Wolves manager's future has not yet been confirmed, McCarthy himself has more recently said on a number of occasions that he has no plans to move on.

Meanwhile, Jonathan Symonds has left the Marcus Evans Group but remains a director of Town.

Symonds was appointed the chief operating officer of mobile ticketing company Active PLC in January after more than 20 years with MEG.

He joined the Town board in November 2007 following Marcus Evans’s takeover and was joint-managing director with Milne between April 2013 and August 2015.

Sounds good to me - would be great to reinstate our Dutch connection.

Would possibly get plenty of advice, and support, from our great Dutchmen of the past - never to be forgotten by those of us old enough to remember such heady days. Frans and Arnie - take a bow.

Get him in Evans - the Club would be overwhelmed with Season Ticket Applications - after the recent debacle.

Problem is we are stuck with McCarthy who has stated he is not going anywhere and seeing out his contact, the only way we are rid of him is by sacking him and Evans wont pay out the odd million owed if this happens. How stupid those bloody idoots Evans, Milne and co were by renewing McCarthy's contract in the middle of last season when many of us could see where the club was going and predicting where we are now.

Complete and utter dross, just another coach negotiating his contract in the media playing his current club against a fictional suitor.

Much as I dislike McCarty's tactics, I can't see the point if we only change the manager.
A complete change of regime is what is needed.
Can anyone really see a smart, ambitious manager believing that hooking up with Milne and ME is a good idea?
If MM goes we will make a cheap and desperate appointment of a has been.

This is old news, I'm sure the club started to look at who they might bring in when Mick was on the fence, but it's clear now that he's not going anywhere until the end of next season.

Mick will see out his contract, to look after himself and line up his next job. Walking away after a failed season would be bad for his CV, he doesn't give a monkeys about what is best for ITFC. I'm just bitterly disappointed that fans haven't made his position untenable, I stayed behind in the north stand after the Wednesday game to applaud the players but also to tell Mick what I thought of him. Unfortunately only a hundred or so of us did the same and while we could be heard singing "we want you to go", it would have been a much more powerful message if everyone who complains about our current plight did the same. What a wasted opportunity.

MM said he's seeing out his contract. ME won't sack him at the end of the season so this is a non story.

I see the same old people using the same old lack of budget excuse.
Money means nothing if you don't have the ability to coach a team to play football.
Which Mick clearly doesn't have.
Please explain to me how lack of budget explains playing Chambers at right back for 3 and a half years to avoid picking 2 from 3 centre halves? The amount of goals we conceded due to him being exposed was ridiculous.
During that period Johnny Parr was treated like crap to accommodate him and ended up leaving because he knew he should have been playing, a few months later Mings was sold, Parr could have slotted in nicely at left back but instead we ended up wasting money on the plodder that is Knudsen, all because he couldn't pick 2 from 3.
Another thing lack of budget doesn't excuse is playing Sears as a winger for 18 months destroying his confidence, and then there's "Different class" Dougie. That man has played over 50 games for this club and every time there has been a better option.
Yes there isn't a lot of money but he signs these players after watching them for their clubs or in trial periods with us. Douglas,Coke,Best,Bajner,Malarczyk, Digby, Knudsen, Moore, are just some examples of wasted wages, all signed by him when there's better players available out there.
He loves having no cash, he loves it, he thinks it gives him the excuse to play 2 defensive midfielders all the time, even at home against lowly opposition.
He plays to nick games 1-0 after bludgeoning the opposition for 90 minutes because that's all he's capable of, even if you have him 20 million quid he'd just buy 20 million quids worth of Douglas and Skuse type players, he can't coach proper footballers.
So yes I'm prepared for this Dutch fellow to come in if that's what happens because right now I'd take a potato in a tracksuit over a man who has nothing but contempt for the clubs fans and is the reason there will be less than 10,000 of them in the ground every home game next year if he's still here.

The problems run deeper than Mick and if we do change managers then whoever comes in must be able to spend and make it his team.

Even if this is true why has he said this to the media? Mick is still in a job and disrespectful of him to say he's been approached when it's not even a vacant position. My personal opinion is I'm happy to give Mick a chance to rebuild and go again. Some disagree which they're entitled to but if we have a good summer we can start to look up rather than down.

If a change of manager was to happen, still unlikely, Evans would have to take wise counsel from a football insider as he and Milne have no real knowledge. Should MM depart, a young attack minded manager backed by someone like Mick Mills who understands what is needed, would get my vote. Whatever happens the club needs to be united with an end to insults from Manager and fans alike.

I recently read Roy Keanes autobiography and he mentioned how he was offered the Town job whilst Magilton was still the manager.. Marcus Evans could be doing the same again.

Thebeat great post, spot on as usual!

I am holding on to the thought that MM is going and that is why players havent been secured because they might not fit into another managers thoughts.

We all know that there is so much said by clubs and their employees that you really can, only believe it when it happens!

Mick out!!!!

All those dreaming of a fairy tale had better prepare themselves for League one and worse there's more chance of that than a play off place.
Ask Coventry Charlton Wigan Rotherham et al if they would like to swop places I think we know the answer.

As I have stated before, this is what happens when you get a non football man in charge of a football club. ME doesn't care about our traditions as s attractive footballing side,he just wants promotion. For the first time in twenty years I haven't renewed my season ticket,I won't go again until MM goes. The most arrogant man in football.

woohoo added 08:03 - May 2
If ME is still the owner then I'm not sure that a change of manager will bring much improvement in our fortunes. I'd prefer a more progressive, attack- minded manager but there also needs to be more investment by the owner and a change in attitude towards the fans.

I'm going for "by mutual consent" MM leaves at the end of the season.Or he's poached by another club who have sacked their manager?
Really cannot see MM starting next season with the fans on his back, and they will be [and every bloody right to be as well], plus sub 10k season ticket owners. ME realises that surely.
As for people saying "who is this guy, pedigree etc" had they heard of Eddie Howe before Bournemouth, David Wagner before 'Huddersfield?
Just think, a young manager with a Dutch background, that's enough to put 4k season ticket extra on the table on day one!
