Blues Reportedly Renew Interest in Woodrow and Watkins
Monday, 15th May 2017 12:35

Town are reported to be battling Burton Albion for the signature of Fulham striker Cauley Woodrow - who was linked with a loan move in January - and are said to be one of a number of clubs chasing long-term target Marley Watkins, who is a free agent having left Barnsley at the end of the season.

According to the Daily Mirror the Blues and Brewers are fighting it out for Woodrow, who spent the second half of 2016/17 on loan at the Pirelli Stadium.

The 22-year-old, who made only one start and four sub appearances in the Championship for the Cottagers prior to his switch, in addition to two goals in three starts in the EFL Cup, looks to be surplus to requirements at Craven Cottage despite having another year left on his contract, which also includes an option for a further season.

The 6ft ½in tall striker made 11 starts and three sub appearances for Burton and scored five goals.

Woodrow played youth football with Spurs, Buckhurst Hill and Luton - with whom he made his first three senior appearances as a sub in the FA Trophy - before joining the then-Premier League Whites in March 2011 for a fee which was set to hit seven figures after top-ups.

Having spent time out on loan with Southend in League Two, where he made 10 starts and 12 sub appearances, scoring four times, Hemel Hempstead-born Woodrow made his Premier League debut for Fulham in a 3-1 defeat at Cardiff in March 2014.

In total Woodrow has made 28 starts and 37 sub appearances for the Whites, scoring 12 goals.

Also according to the Daily Mirror, four Championship clubs, Town, Cardiff City, Bristol City and Wolves, are fighting it out for wide midfielder or striker Watkins. However, Premier League Burnley are also said to be keen.

The 26-year-old was the subject of a £1 million Town offer last summer with the Blues showing further interest in January.

Quizzed on whether he might make a renewed summer move for Watkins in March, Blues boss Mick McCarthy kept his cards typically close to his chest: “I don’t know. We’ll see, he’s out of contract.”

Meanwhile, former Town striker Daryl Murphy could be allowed to leave Newcastle United as part of a summer reshuffle at St James’ Park, according to the Newcastle Chronicle.

Murphy, 34, joined the Magpies from the Blues for £3 million last August, signing a two-year deal, and went on to score five goals in nine starts and nine sub appearances as the North-East club carried off the Championship title.

....Did we actually get £3m for Murphy? Seen it posted on here that we got nothing. Which would explain the massive £10k fee paid for a non league reserve striker.

The descriptor " Battling it out either Burton", says everything about the level this once great Club as sunk to now under Evans ownership.

Depressing times huh !

Woodrow could be another Freddie Sears type signing. He scored a few for Burton so wouldn't be the worst signing but can't see him being a vast improvement on what we already have. Marley Watkins would be a good signing but I can't see him picking us over the other mentioned clubs. As great as Murphy was, he'd be a step backwards to re-sign and we need to invest in the future.

I honestly believe our scouting system nowadays is essentially a list of 20 players who have played against us before and looked half decent. I'm sure when one player moves on we cross them off and stick another name down. Kieffer Moore's memorable 'hitting the post for Yeovil' clearly secured his spot on the list.

I don't even hold out hope this Summer of exotic signings like Knudsen from Denmark or Webster from League 2. Unless of course there were Stevenage or Lincoln players we struggled to cope with.

Matt Rhead is probably just behind Hugill, Woodrow and Danny Ward in the strikers column.

Burton's record attendance is 6476, surely we can win a "battle" with them to sign a player?! I wouldn't mind Woodrow as a permanent signing, right age and height and scored goals for Burton during his loan (unlike the strikers we signed in January).

No disrespect to Woodrow, but this hints at the level of "investment" that we are likely to see in the squad over the summer. Very much doubt that we will get Watkins as long as even one other club is in for him.

Neither of these of the answer. Only striker I'd be interested in is Jordan Hugill. Massive handful. But unlikely as it will cost around £2 million I suspect

Not headline grabbers at all but Woodrow's record at burton 5 goals in 11 is actually quite decent !
And Watkins seems decent as well !

We have to remember here that Evans is not going to be spending big so these seem decent for the sort of market we are going to be operating in.

I wouldn't be against either, or both, of these players being signed. I think they would certainly be an improvement on the ones we are releasing and Watkins in particular would be a likely starter in our first XI. I think Woodrow has something about him too, in the limited amount of him that I have seen, and would offer something different to what we have. I'd still prefer we prioritise Danny Ward as our new striker though.

Doesn't set the pulses racing to be honest, but in sad reality, these are the signings we should be expecting with the current board. Sad times ahead.

Seriously Ipswich Town, Marcus Evans and McCarthy!!! SERIOUSLY!!!!

After seasons of negative, route one, lump it up the channel, pass it sideways, playing for a draw football and our lowest league position in years. After all the unrenewed season tickets. After all the Mick and Evans out chants. After the miserable performances. After the we don't care mercenary wandering players. After all the calls for investment into the team from fans. After Milne and McCarthy talking of "a massive rebuild over the summer" THE CLUB SETS IT'S SIGHTS ON PLAYERS WE MUST "BATTLE" BURTON ALBION FOR!!

Ipswich Town, the UEFA Cup winning Ipswich Town!? That is right isn't it. I mean I have got the correct Ipswich Town? Not the FA Vase winning Ipswich Town or the Johnston's Paint Trophy winners?

Oh how we have fallen. Relegation next year...mark my words.

Why can't Marcus spend some money!! He'll make it back through fraudulent tickets at some sporting event anyway

Asa, didn't we struggle to cope with all the Lincoln players?

Now a summer of transfer speculation constantly taunting the supporters of this club. Every week will be a different player we are chasing. A pathetic frenzy whipped up by the local newspaper. Why do we still have a manager most supporters do not want ?

Edmundo added 14:59 - May 15
Absolutely Madmouse1959 why aren't the media (this site too) actually focussing on the REAL story at ITFC: the nonsense doublespeak of Ian Milne, yes man to the invisible Rio-unbound Marcus Evans, and the equally culpable Mick "no emotional connection whatsoever to the club" McCarthy? Distracting us with this load of s*ite is nonsense. Get all over the real stories please, journalists!

We are mentioned in a list of other clubs - has anyone for the club said we are in for them? No.

Phil used the words "battling with" and "fighting for" to describe the the links. Yet the report leads to meltdown as usual.

Woodrow might actually be a good signing, hard to say, not so sure about Watkins however, only because not really seen enough of him. When we were first linked with Woodrow I was dubious, but I watched some footage on him and he looks like he has an eye for goal (something we're badly missing!) and he is still young so should develop, although youth development and Mick McCarthy are 2 words that don't seem to fit well in the same sentence!

wouldn't be comparing attendances or if we may or may not be a more desirable club to play for. That's naive. Don't want players who don't ALREADY know how fantastic we are :-)

I just we would fork out some money and buy a proven player, not cast-offs.Is that asking too much, surely not.🤔

As far as Cauley Woodrow goes, it's clear he has some serious body odeur issues judging by Myles expression.
Could be a problem in the dressing room
Best look elsewhere
In Mick We Don't Trust

One word "sh1t". We come across as scraping the barrel. How can fans get motivated by the arrogance and incompetence of the management at this place! We want our great club back and this seems miles off.
