Spence Signs Two-Year Deal
Tuesday, 6th Jun 2017 16:38 by Dave Gooderham

Jordan Spence admitted it was an easy decision to commit his future to Ipswich Town after signing a two-year deal.

The right-back impressed last season after signing for the Blues in January — four months after he initially failed to impress on trial.

Spence wasted little time in showing what he could do, making 15 starts and wrestling the right-back spot from Josh Emmanuel and allowing Luke Chambers to move inside.

Out of contract at the end of the season, Spence said he had no doubt his future remained at Portman Road after manager Mick McCarthy made his intentions clear.

He told Ipswich Town’s You Tube channel: “It was an easy decision as soon as the manager made it clear he wanted me to stay.

“He showed a lot of faith in me by putting me almost straight into the side and then sticking with me — that gave me a lot of confidence.

“I had the confidence in myself that I could perform at this level, there is no doubt of that. But it was nice having it from such a well-established manager in the game.”

Spence previously spent time at West Ham, Bristol City and MK Dons and despite reported interest from other Championship clubs, the 27-year-old admitted he never entertained any other offers.

Talking to the ITFC official website, he added: “Obviously last season didn’t go as well as everyone would have hoped for here but I never thought we were in a relegation fight. We were always five or six points clear.

“The game at home against Newcastle showed what we are capable of. We coupled the work-rate and the tactical nous with the quality we have and it all came together.

“The place was rocking that day and we have to look to do that more often next season and compete at the top end of the Championship. It won’t be easy because it’s a tough league but we will be ready for the challenge.”

Good signing, makes sense for all parties involved. Emyr Huws needs to be signed now. Do not believe for one second a 'massive shake up' will happen though. Definitely will be operating in the free market again.

After reading an interview with Ian Milne a few days ago, I read a comment out of the blue saying "I have no reason to believe there's any bad feelings or disagreements" referring to ME or MM after there end of season conversation. Thought it was a really bizarre comment out of the blue and made me start thinking maybe they have had a fall out but MM won't walk and ME won't pay him off. Milne also stated "MM will be here for another year". No mention of a further deal.

I think he did enough to earn a contract in his time here no doubt aided and abetted by being out of contract, hope he pushes on.

Fantastic news. I really can't understand why he had several months without a club before coming to Town.

Just the sort of player we need and it means Chambers doesn't have to play right back!

Certainly did enough to warrant a contract extension. Whether he is good enough to push us up a level remains to be seen. But good to see him sign.

Bet he is the top signing Milne was going on about that we need !

You can imagine it "This is the sort of investment Marcus is putting in"

Blah blah blah blah

Good signing but come on mr Evans and co let's see the sort of signings this once great club desperately need!

Fairly decent signing. Don't think he's a massive improvement on Josh Emmanuel but adds competition for places and probably not going to break the bank so that money can go towards the more creative players that we'll need to add.

Really like what I've seen of this lad, both on and off the field. We need talented young players who really want to be at the club -- and he seems to fit the bill (and our budget!). Well done Town and good luck Jordan.

Decent signing nothing that will get us anywhere above mid table and to be fair don't really think he is any better than Emmanuel. Emmanuel is one of our own youngsters so I would be playing him as our first choice RB so he can progress. Just like Kenlock should now be our first choice LB as he is streaks ahead of Knudsen.

Good signing!

He deserved a permanent contract after his performances in the second half of last season. I hope we are still looking for a top right back though.

Good news. Should mean Chamno sees more action at cb. Gives us some impetus on the right. Good attitude, let's hope 1st of many

I don't have a problem with signing him, good addition to the squad from what we saw if him last season, but don't think he brings much to change our style of play, still from the little Evans wants to invest hes probably the best available:)

Interesting way of putting it. Signing Spence allowed Chambers to move inside.

Or, the truth.

Websters injury forced Chambers inside and MM was forced swallow his pride and sign the man he previously rejected who turned out to be good.....
