Garner Confirmation Close
Wednesday, 14th Jun 2017 15:16

Town target Joe Garner has undergone his Blues medical and the striker's £1 million move from Rangers will be confirmed either this afternoon or tomorrow. On Sunday, TWTD was first to reveal that the Blues were closing in on signing the 29-year-old.

Garner is understood to have agreed a three-year deal at Portman Road with only minor details relating to the switch still to be tied up.

The former Preston striker will be keen to get the move tied up as swiftly as possible as he is getting married in his native Lancashire on Friday.

Garner moved to Ibrox from Preston for £1.4 million last summer, when Town we understand were also interested, signing a three-year contract.

The former England U16, U17 and U19 international scored 10 goals in 22 starts and 12 sub appearances during 2016/17.

Garner started his career with his hometown club Blackburn Rovers but was unable to break into the first team prior to moving on to Carlisle, initially on loan, then Nottingham Forest, Huddersfield (loan), Scunthorpe (loan), Watford and Carlisle for a further loan spell before joining Preston in 2013.

While with the Lilywhites the 5ft 10in tall frontman scored a 20-minute second-half hat-trick as the Lancastrians beat the Blues 3-2 in an FA Cup third round replay at Deepdale in January 2014.

The following season Garner won the League One Player of the Year award as he helped Preston into the Championship via the play-offs.

Meanwhile, Town boss Mick McCarthy flew back to the UK from his holiday home in Florida yesterday, although is not expected to be back at Portman Road until next week.

£ 1 million. I hope Scrooge didn't spend the entire budget on one player.

So Mick has two holiday homes then, one in Florida and one at Portman Road.

@MeenoITFC - Support for any new player is a given i think mate, just worried Dino will play him out of position and ruin the player like he did with Sears !!

I think 1mill is a lot for him but if he's anything like he was for PNE then I'll happily take him. Hope this isn't the last of signings as we'll definitely struggle without them. At least a CB and a couple of centre mids, AT LEAST

The championships answer to Harry Kane I'm so excited I could crush a grape you can't even call Garner it has been because he's not been yet another useless signing

I said after Forest game: First summer signing has to be a Fee ✔️ & has to show intent & ambition: this is inbetween: We have to be realistic thou we're not going to spend 3/4 m on any player like Derby seem to be with Wisdom: I hope our next 2/3 Pernament signings are between 1-2m time will tell: as I've said if Garner scores 10-15 goals it's been a real success: we will still need another Striker thou id personally go for Gallagher who spent last season on loan at Blackburn: tall, mobile, good finisher: I think we could get him between 1-2m or Season Loan with a view to signing pernament:

Moving towards the imminent stage now, I guess. Hopefully news of Huws next...

Does show a good sign, a 7 figure sum is what we like to see in the first signing. Emyr Huws is an absolute must still, aswell as a real threatening winger.

Regarding the Suffolk Stratosphere.... DON'T WORRY mate! cause according to "expert" Mark Lawrenson Mr. Garner literally "hangs in the air"?! :-)

http://www.eadt.co.uk/sport/ipswich-town-fans-are-going-to-love-joe-garner-says-

... but ohhh according to the same "expert" , and despite generally showering Mr. Garner in all kinds of accolades (hmmm given it's an EADT article might they possibly somehow be Ian "The Snake Oil Salesman Extraordinaire" Milne orchestrated I wonder??? lol) Joe is quote: "NOT prolific"???!!! Uhu :-)

I hope this is one of many decent signings to come.

I'd like to see a few more quality operators coming into the club, such as young Ollie Watkins from Exeter City.

He's only 22 years old, EFL Young Player of the Year 2016/17, hungry, talented, great balance, good skill level, can run with the ball, pass effectively and certainly knows where the goal is. He must be on a few club's radar after last season but he's got to be worth a punt surely? Hell, I'd chip in myself if I thought we could get him!

Strange one that article MickZzzTactics, on the one hand we're supposedly going to love him (at least according to Lawro) mainly because he works so hard, but then on the other hand he says he's not prolific! Surely goals make fans love a striker rather than how hard they work? Lawro has confused me a bit there! I'd rather have a lazy striker that scores 1 goal every 2 or 3 games, than a workhorse that scores 1 every 6!

@kernewekBlue

Me too ... and agree Mr. Watkins looks truly gifted & exciting .... HOWEVER I think we ITFC fans can forget about him if there is any truth to this article (i.e. Exeter wants a staggering 4 mill for him!!!):

http://www.hitc.com/en-gb/2017/05/21/report-leeds-united-striker-target-ollie-wa

... but there are several other very good & youngish offensive players in the 3rd & 4th English tier which MIGHT cut it in our league, and most of them are neatly covered in this EADT article:

@midastouch

Totally concur .... but as you likely can derive (I certainly did) from all the Lawro **mumbo jumbo**, Joe is a 'PROPER BLOKE'! .... especially in the prehistoric dinosauric eyes of Grandmaster Mick ... and sadly that is, not the least seen in a historical pov, pretty much **ALL** that matters to Grandmaster Mick when he goes player shopping!!!

Not at all howdon, the more the merrier. I actually lifted it myself from the Marcus Evans out of ITFC Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/marcusevansgroupitfc/
Couldn't resist it! ;-)

Proper Blokes for a Proper Bighead, that's Mick down to Tee!
Talking of tea, who's gonna make the all the brews now that Kevin Bru's left the Town? How about Mick's totally dispensable sidekick Terry O'Cuppa? The man with an eye for goal (or make that an own goal!) ;-)
