Town Step Up Bodvarsson Interest as Pitman Closes in on Pompey Move
Thursday, 13th Jul 2017 12:50

Brett Pitman’s impending exit to Portsmouth, as revealed by TWTD earlier today, will see the Blues bring in another striker and we understand Wolves’ Icelandic international frontman or wide player Jon Dadi Bodvarsson is currently top of their list of targets.

Bodvarsson was first linked by Midlands sources on Tuesday and we understand Town have intensified their interest as Pitman’s departure on a free transfer moves closer to being confirmed.

The Jersey-born striker is believed to have travelled to Fratton Park today for talks regarding personal terms and to undergo a medical, the clubs having agreed their side of the switch.

We understand discussions between Town and Wolves regarding Bodvarsson are ongoing with a permanent move and a season-long loan both still on the table.

The 25-year-old, who has two years left on his contract, is believed to be surplus to requirements at Molineux and has not travelled with the rest of the squad for their pre-season camp in Austria having been given an extended summer break.

Bodvarsson started his career with Selfoss in his home country before moving on to Norwegian club Viking, German side Kaiserslautern and then Wolves for £1 million in the summer of 2016.

Last season 6ft 3in tall Bodvarsson made 24 starts and 24 sub appearances for Wolves, scoring three goals.

Against Town at Molineux last August Bodvarsson, who has been capped 32 times by Iceland, scoring twice, won a penalty which he then took and had saved by Bartosz Bialkowski.

Links with Doncaster striker John Marquis are understood to be no more than social media rumour.

Not sure why everone thinks pitman is this goalmachine,he's never scored more then 13 goals in a season at this level, not good enough and brings nothing to the team under mick

At Wolverhampton away last season this chap looked at real live wore to me and hot the woodwork before winning a penalty. Think he's worth a punt personally based on what I saw.

Looking back at Harry's pre-match posts, the supporters' views on "Bod" changed quite dramatically in his one season at Wolves:

August 2016
“Our Icelandic Steve Bull looks a player”, “We were treated to a proper Icelandic clap at the end of the Rotherham game”, “I did join in but with Bod starting it, you had to”, “He is being compared to Derek Dougan now, big, strong and quick, a real fans favourite”, “Bod could become a cult hero.”
The 24-year-old arrival from Kaiserslautern “will be a real handful for defenders in this league”, “He's not just a target man either”, “He's strong and powerful but also quite agile and skilful. He will really suit English football”, “Plenty of running, picking up intelligent spaces and bringing others into play.”
“Long live the new Icelandic king!”, “I really like the look of him. He's good in the air, quick and he doesn't let defenders rest”, “He defends from the front by closing down, giving defenders something to think about by taking them on”, “An absolute Trojan up front”, “The Iceman looks a handful.”

March 2017
“If only Jón Böðvarsson could get a bloody goal for a change.” The 24-year-old summer arrival from Kaiserslautern “tries hard but has no end product”, “Yes, he works hard but at the end of the day his job is to score goals and he just doesn't look like scoring. Play him in a front pairing or not at all.”
“Böðvarsson can't jump. His feet don't leave the ground. It makes awful viewing seeing us launch it long to him and him not winning anything”, “He is more effective coming short for the ball to his feet rather than duelling aerially”, “When you last scored in August it's clear the killer instinct is missing.”

When people keep moaning about too many loans: remind me how many Huddersfield had? Oh yes 3 Ward, Mooy, Brown: if signing a loan player makes you successful & we achieved promotion no1 here would care: let's be honest if Dadi Signs & he scores the winner against Birmingham everyone will be doing cartwheels:

Strange move from the club, if we're going in for another loan (which I'm against) why from the Championship? and a player who hasn't got a great scoring record, wait another workhorse!!

As mentioned more permanent players in please, a few have already been shipped out.

Someone has to make Sears look prolific!

I think this guy may be THE surprise package of the Summer buys/loans!
Having seen some video clips of Bodvarssen (especially for Kaiserslaurten & Iceland), I can see what attracts MM.
I strongly believe MM see's him as a Target Striker (not as a winger).
He certainly is a worker & puts a shift up & down the channels, he is good in the air, and has some nice cool finishes too.
He plays in an uncomplicated style & could be an ideal foil for Garner or Sears/Mcgoldrick up front.
Fingers crossed it is a Permanent buy.

Typical MM signing big , works hard, lacks skill and cannot score enough at this level ,but will be helpful at defending corners .
Pitman fell out with MM last season so has to go for daring to criticise our style of play.
Personally still think our squad at present is weaker than the one that finished last season which struggled to a low mid table position

Remember, this is a player who was in the Iceland side that beat England 2-1 just over a year ago!

For a lot of people commenting... "underwhelmed" "poor choice" etc

Murphy was NEVER a prolific striker til THAT season
Huws pre loan signing "cardiff reject, why would we want him?"
the list goes on

wait til they play for us then judge...

Stirling ...
I will give you a list that goes on , strikers signed by MM who have failed to get into double figures in a season
Bajner, Varney , Best , Salmon , Moore , Alabi , Nouble , Sears , Dids apart from one season 4 years ago
too add two more players who have struggled to score at this level because they work hard gives supporters every reason to be underwhelmed .
And Murphy was at the club already when MM joined

Great yet another striker who doesn't know where the net is.
Think Marquis would be a much better option and would probably cost
under a million.

I bet it took Phil ages to find a picture of him taking a shot at goals.

His record for a forward player is awful.

If we had a choice of Pitman or him, which would you take? This is one of the most scary transfer stories for quite some time. How on earth he can justify his status as a "forward" I do not know.

Is a good KPI for a forward player the amount of goals you score? I think it is.

SHOCKING..........Clegg in.

Big strong target man I hear, Mick can't wait to get him here and stick him out wide I bet...

Hoping he's a confidence player and the Wolves fans have knocked it out of him, if that's the case then here's hoping he feels good and settles here...if we get him of course..

lets be honest the signings made so far spence, huws, garner, grumpy, ade, are hardly going to bring the fans flocking back, spence and huws were in the team when forest stuffed us 3-0 in our last game, and we have lost berra and replaced him with ?? lots of work needs doing in the transfer market if we are to avoid a relegation scrap, anyone who thinks differently at present is deluded or still has their blue tinted shades on!
if we start with same back 4 and odd game with webster when fit its going to be an almighty slog

All fans please read the article properly and lets keep an open mind. Firstly it states both loan and permanent moves are still on the table. If it is a loan then those unhappy can moan but lets stop hysteria and see.
Secondly Didzy, Murphy and even Tom Lawrence had appalling records at previous clubs and to various degrees have flourished here, lets see what the guy does, if he joins us lets judge him on what he does on the pitch. After three months lets judge him and the manager in relation to that signing.

Players like Pablo in years gone by were hardly prolific but added to the team and was a fans favourite. Pitman whilst a natural goal scorer has hardly proven a must have on the team sheet and if his appearances were to be limited it makes sense to free his wages and get a fresh face in. I want a better atmosphere, better football, better results, pride in the team and so much more, but moaning from the start and not getting behind the team and seeing what develops over the first five or six games is in my opinion ridiculous.

Top of the list a player who can barely get in the wolves team and scored the amazing amount of 3 goals last season ......incredible that some are pleased about this ...wow have we tumbled

Let's face it, Mick's style of play is never going to change so we need a Big Man up there. He's international pedigree and I doubt we will attract a better option. Wolves don't play hoofball and he was also used wide and as a sub, so not surprised by his goal record. Worth a punt on a loan with a view to buy.

I think he should be welcomed if he comes. The club has paid little or nothing in transfer fees on strikers until Garner signed for approx £750k, so I dont think we should complain about the quality we have got for the budget available. Murphy & McGoldrick were exceptional free signings.

Bodvarsson has 32 caps at a young age, so was obviously very highly rated by Lagerback, one of the most respected coaches in world football.

It might be a mistake to focus on his scoring record. Not alone has he changed clubs, but he has also now played league football in four different countries in a very short period of time. His record in the Norwegian top flight at a young age was very similar to Pitman's scoring record here. Pitman scored 15 in 70 appearances and Bovardsson has hopefully years of improvement in him.

People were concerned that Garner wasnt tall enough to give us an option up front in the air, so he ticks that box also. I think his attitude will be far superior to Pitman's. Part of the brief of scouts now is to find a striker about to hit a hot streak, not just after one when their price is inflated.Garner, Celina & Bodvarsson would be very interesting options and I think Rowe might surprise a few as well.

cat added 18:32 - Jul 13
With the exception of Celina (who is young and got his whole career ahead of him) out of all our new additions not one was a regular starter for there previous club, let's not forget that they have come from clubs on a similar level to ours! Its going to be a struggle this season, the bookies don't lie, even worse though, with the Dino still at the helm it's gonna be ugly as well. No regrets so far from me not purchasing a ST!!

Ps At least we still have Skuse and Chambo, just to keep things all lovely and positive. (Lol)

Cat: you could have said the same about Murphy, McGoldrick, Huws, Fraser, Lawrence, etc when they joined
