Former Millwall Full-Back Cummings Featured in Friendly
Thursday, 13th Jul 2017 19:29

TWTD understands former Millwall right-back Shaun Cummings played for the Blues in Tuesday’s behind closed doors friendly against Southend at Playford Road which Town won 4-1. The 28-year-old is a free agent with his Lions contract having been up at the end of last season.

Cummings is understood to have featured in the second half of the game in which Blues boss Mick McCarthy fielded a different team in each half.

The Hammersmith-born full-back came through the youth system at Chelsea and went on loan to the MK Dons and West Brom while with the Premier League champions.

Having been unable to break into the first team at Stamford Bridge, Cummings moved on to Reading, where his former Chelsea academy coach Brendan Rodgers was then manager, in the summer of 2009.

After six years at the Madejski Stadium in which he was a regular in the team which topped the Championship in 2011/12, 6ft tall Cummings moved on to Millwall in the summer of 2015.

The three-times-capped Jamaica international made 53 starts and two sub appearances for the Lions, scoring three times, and was part of the squad which returned to the Championship via May's League One play-offs, although he missed the second semi-final against Scunthorpe and the 1-0 final victory over Bradford at Wembley due to a hamstring injury.

Cummings failed to return to Millwall for the start of pre-season training at the end of last month having rejected the offer of a new contract.

Town are need of another right-back as cover for Jordan Spence with Josh Emmanuel having been allowed to join Rotherham on loan earlier today in order to gain first-team experience.

It's understood that the delay in confirming Emmanuel's move to the Millers related to the lack of back-up to first-choice Spence.

We were a relegation threatened team last year so having helped save us Emyr is a great signing to help avoid another relegation scrap.

However have we signed anyone that anybody thinks will fire us to promotion? Of course not. Hope there is still room for ambition in this transfer window

Could be a good deal on a free - has lots of experience in this league & last time I looked Millwall are a championship team again now & have offered him a contract.

We do need to invest more though - centre half & centre forward in my view - so let's hope that's what happens! My reservations remain about MM & ME but I'm trying to be positive!

COYB!

Congratulations to those who bought season tickets will you never learn, when we start looking at people like Cummings you can clearly see Ipswich town are in for another mediocre season

Solid signing.

Developing youth by the way isn't about throwing them in at the deep end all the time and reserve football's nothing. Lower League's a good place to be at that stage. Not every young player is a Burley or Dozzel snr. They were amazing at their age..

Shame we had to let Emmanuel go out on loan but the experience will do him good. As for this guy, it says he was a regular at Reading, he made 77 appearances over 6 seasons? And 24 for Millwall over 2. He could be worth a punt though just on a season long contract to help cover Spence. He has some good experience at this level as well as international and for a defender he is still quite young so could have a lot to prove and Millwall did want to keep him. As Grizzly said we did sign Sears from Colchester (L1) and Bart from Notts County (L1) and we do tend to find gems (and some flops) from the lower leagues such as Cresswell from Tranmere and Mings from Chippenham

Experienced back up for RB and fit.
Fine for a short term deal while Josh is out on loan.

Looked into this potential signing in a bit more detail.

Sounds like he had a good season last year and Millwall were keen to keep him. He's not been called up for Jamaica in a very long time, and is not part of the current or recent set up of the Jamaican national team. Good age, experienced and would be adequate cover for Spence in the event of injury, suspension or tiredness.

He'll be good competition for Spence, and it will allow Kenlock to have a run in the side.

Those moaning about Emmanuel going out on loan - how many managers do you seriously think would play two youngsters in defence in anything other than an emergency?
