Town Sign Wolves Defender Iorfa On Loan
Friday, 14th Jul 2017 16:38

Town have announced the signing of Wolverhampton Wanderers right-back Dominic Iorfa on loan for the season.

The 22-year-old England U21 international underwent a medical at Portman Road this afternoon before tying up the formalities relating to his move.

"I'm happy to be here because Ipswich is a good club," Iorfa told iFollow Ipswich.

"I spoke to the manager a few days ago and he told me about the plans for the season; he really sold it to me.

"The moment I spoke to him, I couldn't wait to get here and get started. He basically just told me that he wanted to get me on board, and he told me what positions he plans to use me in.

"I can play right-back and centre-half as well. He's confident that we can have a good season and push for the play-offs.

"He's assembled a good squad and I think things are looking promising for the club."

Manager Mick McCarthy added: “I’m thrilled to have got Dominic. He is very athletic, has got great pace and can play at centre-half as well as right-back and is equally good in both roles.

“With the defenders we already have here in the squad and with Dominic coming in, we have really good options in that area.”"

Southend-born Iorfa began his career with his hometown club but left the Shrimpers for Wolves - then managed by McCarthy - aged only 15.

The 6ft 4in tall full-back, who can also operate at centre-half, spent time on loan at Shrewsbury in the 2013/14 season before breaking into the first team at Molineux midway through the following campaign.

Capped by England at U18 and U20 level in addition to his 13 games for the U21s, Iorfa has made 91 starts and two sub appearances for Wolves, so far without scoring a senior goal.

Despite having been a regular throughout last season and featuring for the England U21s at this summer's European Championships, Iorfa, who is contracted until the summer of 2019, was left out of the Wolves squad which travelled to Austria for a pre-season training camp earlier this week.

Earlier in the summer, Derby were claimed to be eyeing a move with Iorfa, who was said to be valued at £4 million, while more recently Leeds have been linked.

Iorfa's father, also Dominic, is a former international winger with Nigeria. At club level he had spells with QPR, Peterborough and Southend among many others.

Town have been on the lookout for another right-back to compete with Jordan Spence having allowed Josh Emmanuel to join Rotherham on loan earlier in the week in order to gain first-team experience.

Regarding Emmanuel, McCarthy added: “Josh needs to be playing first-team games every week and hopefully he will do that at Rotherham. “He will gain a lot from the experience and come back to us a better player for it.” "

On Tuesday former Millwall right-back Shaun Cummings played in the friendly against Southend but the signing of Iorfa is likely to end the Blues' interest in the one-time Reading defender.

The addition of another player who can play as a right-sided centre-half, joining skipper Luke Chambers and Adam Webster in the squad, could have some bearing on Steven Taylor's future at Town.

The former Newcastle man is currently training with the Blues with a view to winning a contract having been on a short-term deal last season.

Meanwhile, the Royals have confirmed the signing of Town target Jon Dadi Bodvarsson from Wolves on a three-year deal.

Great signing, much better player than Spence who is a good player himself. Can cover at centre half and play in a 3. A lot of Premier League clubs were looking at him last season very surprised that Wolves have let him go.

He's not wanted here. Why should he play over Emmanuel?

Jas...

Just about sick of your moaning about loan players. We've had some quality loan players who have really helped the club and add the calibre of quality we are only ever likely to see permanently if we one day actually do make it ba ck to the Premiership.

This guy is an England U21 international, pacy, 6 feet 4, and probably a better player than Emmanuel at present; Emmanuel has been loaned to a team where he is likely to play 46 games and come back a better player next season. This guy is also versatile.

Suddenly we have 3 players capable of playing at right-back (Spence, Iorfa, Chambers), 2 lefties (Knudsen and Kenlock) and a whole batch who can capably play at CB (Smith, Webster, Chambers, Iorfa, Knudsen and if we sigh him, Taylor).

Good business. Now if we can add 1 more quality wide-man and a decent target man I will be quietly optimistic.

happybeingblue why wud it be unpopular to say Chambers wouldn't be in your fist XI ?

I would go one further. Wouldn't be in my match day squad when everyone is fit and available. Let's be truthful. Best RB now at club - Iorfa, 2nd best - Spence. Best RCB at club - Webster, 2nd best Iorfa/Taylor (if he stays). Best LCB - Smith. Where does the donkey fit in ? Cost us a shed load of goals in last 2 1/2 seasons, admittedly out of position at RB and too slow to play CB. For me the only small chance he should have of playing is if we play 3 CB's which is not Dino's preference.

This signing gives us competition at then back and let's hope we are getting away from picking "proper blokes" who are dross at football. Chambers & exskuse should not be in any team that thinks it has even the slimmest hope of a top 6 place.

Lots of people saying it'll good for josh to get a good run of games which it will. Has everyone forgot that he was better than the rb we had 2 seasons ago he could've already had a run of games and be first choice rb!! This season will be decided by luck McCarthy will set up not to lose and if we're lucky we'll nick some goals to win. You know at 3-0 up at home 15 mins to go he'll sit back and dig in for the win.

I'm finding this one a bit confusing?..either Spence or Iorfa aren't going to play at right back,so that's one of them not going to be happy & i'm assuming Iorfa's not going to be playing in the centre ahead of Chambers,Webster or Smith....plus we already had a big strong youngster in Emanuel who I personally think could've covered right back and centre back?

We need to be prioritising a decent striker - the rest of the squad seems ok enough to me.

Considering he says he is happy playing centre back i expect this is the interim signing to replace Bera until a permanent one can be found. Also can play right back if required.

Sounds a good signing and will give us extra cover for CB. It'll be interesting if he puts pressure on Chambers although Spence could be the one missing out. But competition for places can do no harm.
Next will be striker!

Best bit of business so far this summer.
Emmanuel will get a chance to really push on at Rotherham, while signings like Iorfa will help us compete in the top half of the table this season. He is blessed with fantastic height and athleticism too.

Hoppy - where does this sit with the five point plan? That's the point. I can fully understand signing top premier league clubs youngsters on loan. A Lawrence or Fraser, but I just don't see the point of this personally.

GroovyASH - recommend you skip over my posts then. Because just like you, I'm entitled to my opinion, whether you or anyone else agrees with it or not. I have no issue with the player, just the clubs reliance on loanees, which generally does nothing long term (there are a few exceptions such as Huws). Each summer we find ourselves back at square one. But that's my opinion. I personally don't like that strategy. You do - great. I certainly wouldn't post to say I'm sick of your view ... I'd respect your view.

......... another world class player it seems (according to some ..!!! ) - must be for Wolves to let him move on.. !!!

What a joke ... ?? This Club will never be GREAT again - far too many easily satisfied supporters these days, who expect very little - or even NOTHING in some cases.

Rest in Peace Ipswich Town - you're still heading down the wrong, and rocky road.

Our youth policy is a waste of time and money, we off load home grown talent and bring in on load someone else;s, Sums up our downward direction really. Surprised any one sees forward movement with the squad being formed??????

Great signing! I remember watching a wolves game on telly a year or so ago and this lad was playing, and I thought he was the best player on the pitch by a country mile! He liked to power through into the opposition penalty box very often from what I remember.

Decent signing. I think people forget that we need a little depth in the squad. Josh going on loan is great for him - he needs game time at a lower level to see how he develops.

Bloody 'ell what's the catch? Someone needs to get on the Wolves forum quickly and find out why he was left out of their squad, seems to good to be true for us..

Nothing against this lad but we have probably paid a hefty loan fee and wages for his services, I would rather we spent the money on a proven goalscorer or midfield playmaker positions where we have been weak for years. Think Spence and Emanuel were good enough to do a job for us in defence

What do people not understand about this signing this is for two reasons 1. So we can play 2 different formations I see I iorfa a playing at right back in a back 4 and spence in a wing back on the outside of a back 3 2. The reason he has been brought in on loan is so our own youngster can go and get more experience week in week out Emmanuel will be back next season ready to start , iorfa at this moment in time is light years better than spence and Emmanuel so I am well happy with this loan signing don't think we need any mores for the squad apart from bringing Taylor in as backup and find a out and out goal scorer I'm optimistic this will happen soon cannot wait too see what the bookies will give us points wise on the hcap market about 26-28 pts would be nice I can see next years summer holiday being won on this bet

Mkbobby - I agree with your comments but you have to remember that the usual culprits have a fixed mindset and the facts have to be interpreted so as to reinforce their prejudices. It is though encouraging that the majority of posts on this are positive. Makes a nice change!

This seems like a great signing. A player who has already had 91 starts for a Championship club, plus international experience, is likely to be first choice rather than cover, I would think. Hope we sign him permanently when we go up - (no, I'm not getting THAT carried away! -:))
