U23s Win at Coggeshall
Saturday, 15th Jul 2017 17:34 by James Ager

Town's U23 side came from a goal down to record a 2-1 win at Thurlow Nunn Premier Division side Coggeshall Town in a pre-season friendly on Saturday afternoon, Jack Lankester and Ben Folami (pictured) cancelling out Josce Syrett's opener for the home side.

After a relatively low-key opening half hour in which neither keeper was really tested, the hosts took the lead shortly after the half-hour mark.

A deep corner from the left was headed down by Nnamdi Nwachuku and Syrett bundled the ball over the line from inside the six-yard box.

The Blues went into the break level though after converting their first real effort on goal. A long ball fell kindly for Lankester, who looped the ball over home stopper Sam Cowler from just outside the area.

The second half produced some good attacking football from both sides with chances at both ends.

Monty Patterson's effort four minutes after the break was deflected inches wide and at the other end Chris Millar and then Conor Hubble should have at least tested Nick Hayes but both failed to hit the target.

Coach Gerard Nash changed the whole team - aside from keeper Hayes - just after the hour and a mix of Town's first and second-year scholars impressed against a tiring Coggeshall side.

Fourteen minutes after the changes were made Town grabbed what proved to be the winning goal. Albert Wilton drove forward on the right and his low cut-back was poked into the net by Folami.

The Essex side very nearly equalised with minutes remaining, but Ross Marshall managed to hack Jamie Shaw's goalbound effort off the line after Brett McGavin had been dispossessed on the edge of the Town box.

Wilton's volley in stoppage time clipped the woodwork and the Blues held on for the win against tough opposition.

Ben Morris and Patterson both had fairly quiet afternoons, although the latter got forward well from his left-sided midfield role on a few occasions.

U23s: Hayes, Ronan (Henry 62), Clements (Barley 62), McDonnell (McGavin 62), C Smith (Marshall 62), Ndaba (Vega 62), McKendry (Wilton 62), McLoughlin (D Crowe 62), Morris (Folami 62), Lankester (Dobra 62 (Hughes 73)), Patterson (Foudil 62 (Dobra 82)). Unused: Wright.

It was a boring first half with Town's defence fairly comfortable. Smith & Nbaba strong and Ronan played well. Too man attacks petered out.
However, Folami looked like he can make the grade, finding space with his strong runs. Also Wilton made good runs down the right.
It'll be interesting what Nash does when rest of squad are available. Folami should be given his chance in EFL Cup.
