No New Deal for Taylor
Monday, 17th Jul 2017 15:40

Town boss Mick McCarthy has confirmed that the Blues will not be offering Steven Taylor a new contract.

Following the loan recruitment of Dominic Iorfa, who plays as a right-sided centre-half as well as at right-back, from Wolves on Friday, in addition to Jordan Spence signing a new deal last month, it seemed unlikely that the 31-year-old would be offered new terms.

Skipper Luke Chambers and Adam Webster also both play primarily as right-sided centre-halves.

"“We have brought in Jordan Spence and Dominic Iorfa in recent weeks to add to what we already have at the back,” McCarthy told the club site.""

“Both Jordan and Dominic are very versatile players that can cover full-back and centre-back positions and we have good competition for places at the back now so we won’t be doing anything with Tayls.

"He’s a great pro and he will do a good job for someone. We wish him well.”

Former Newcastle United and Portland Timbers man Taylor joined the Blues on a short-term deal in January and made three appearances with his spell hampered by a recurrent hamstring injury.

He was invited back to Playford Road for the start of pre-season training and given the chance to win a new deal with the Blues, his previous contract having been up at the end of June.

Meanwhile, Brett Pitman, who left the Blues for Portsmouth last week, has been appointed Pompey's captain for the season ahead.

The 29-year-old striker, who has signed a three-year deal at Fratton Park, scored twice in the League One side's 2-0 victory at Bognor Regis Town on Saturday, his first game for the club.

We are FINALLY getting rid of the dead wood and assembling a decent squad. Just need Bru to leave and I would say that we've trimmed off all the fat. Whoever Mick picks should be able to do the job. We've not had that at Town for years.

Worth a try but if any doubts about fitness, and clearly there were, then not worth the risk.

Wish him well but the right decision.

Great defender but too injury prone. Shame but sensible

Add Kenlock and Knudsen to the mix and I think we've plenty of cover. Plus Smith junior looks like he could step up sometime soon.

I'm more worried about the lack of competition/cover for Smith at LCB. Knudson did OK in a back 3/5 but I don't think he could do a job as CB in a back 4.

It's a pity that Stephen is so injury prone.

I saw him interviewed, and also live at a football 'do' at Brantham Bull.He expressed himself eloquently; so hopefully he will have a coaching career ahead of him,or failing that a 'pundit'
Best of luck for the future Stephen

I believe they couldn't afford his wages on top of Kieron Dyer's, our new midfield maestro ...

I agree that a Murphy replacement is the priority, but we also need a Berra replacement as cover for Smith at LCB. I wouldn't want Knudsen playing there regularly in a 4-4-2 and Webster Iorfa and Chambers are too right sided.

Not surprising really considering the player's injury problems.

A good player at this level and would have been an asset to the team when fit, but I feel that his injury problems mean that his playing career is almost over.

So I feel sorry for the lad and wish him well for the future. Shame it will not be with us.

Two things spring to mind regarding us not offering Taylor a deal

1. I think the recent loan signing of the Wolves player has negated the need to sign a very heavily injury prone ageing CB.

2. By not offering Taylor a deal potentially frees up more wages for a better striker target?

Letting Pitman go is going to bite us in the arse!

People seem to be forgetting that Webster was injured for half of last season - he will be like a new signing for us. The recall clause on Emmanuel's loan covers us if a couple of defenders get injured and we need him back. Mick knows what he is doing and people need to calm down

I am not at all saying MM has called this wrong but I am disappointed, this guy was a quality English CB in the premier league not so long ago and injuries aside would still be playing there plus he shows passion and commitment. So disappointed but understand decisions need to be made with the heart not the head and when it comes to town I think more with the former than the latter.

From last year's squad, Berra as a centre half has been replaced by Chambers moving in and Iorfa has replaced Chambers at right back. Emmanuel or didn't play enough games to count as a loss this season and it seems that Kenlock has progressed enough to be real cover for Knudsen. As far as the defence goes it's pretty much status quo. The main difference being that Iorfa is playing in his best position RB and is cover at CB whereas Chambers was playing RB and cover for his best position CB. A step forward, all in all.

At 31 perhaps the best course for Steven is to have a year off and try to get over the injuries and niggles and then try to get a contract somewhere for the next couple of years. Perhaps he could use the time to get a coaching qualification underway. It is sad to see someone with his ability in the situation that he is but sometimes a complete rest for a while is the best course of action. I suspect that MM has consulted the medical staff about Steven's chances of starting the season injury free and the odds of existing problems not resurfacing and decided that it is too risky to give him a contract. I wish that things were different a wish Steven the very best of luck for the future.

A common sense decision.

Could have been a great signing a few years ago, but now injury prone, we have had enough of paying non playing players wages. Just one player missing from a smaller, better squad, that 'fox in the box' natural goalscorer.

I agree with some earlier comments, he's too injury prone and would be a drain on the finances, a couple of years ago it may have been a different story. Pitman as Captain intrigues me, from what I hear he was the biggest moaner at the club, if true is he really up to the job of a leader? However as pointed out letting him go may well come back and bite us. Best of luck to both.

shame but very understandable. I think he would have been more influential off the pitch then on it.

Like a number of recent MM signings - why did he bother signing the guy in the first place...

........ a quality player with much still to offer - down side, yet another player who rolls over injured far too easily.
I think we have enough of those on the payroll already ........ no names mentioned.

Where are the typical Matty Hollands of today ? ........ in short supply I'm afraid.

Happy with that. Wish him luck but total liability and would spend most of the season out collecting a wage. Looked a good footballer for 20mins then got carted off injured. Worth a look but Mick done that now & got younger legs in. Good luck ST.
