McCarthy Hopeful on Signing But It's Not Bunn
Friday, 4th Aug 2017 14:20

Blues boss Mick McCarthy is hopeful that he's getting close to making another signing, but says that man isn’t Huddersfield winger Harry Bunn.

“Hopefully, I think we’re progressing,” McCarthy said when asked whether he was getting close to making an addition at lunchtime’s pre-match press conference, which was live on TWTV.

“Fingers crossed, I’m not going to make too much of it but we’re hoping to get somebody.

“Hopefully we’ll get somebody done and as soon as we do there’ll be an announcement. We’ve been spinning plates all summer. Lots of them have fallen on my head. I’m hoping this one doesn’t.”

McCarthy confirmed that 24-year-old Bunn has been on his radar but isn’t the man he is currently closing in on bringing to Portman Road.

“People know we’re needing a striker,” he said. “I’ve had hundreds put into me of every nationality, every creed, every colour and I’ve pretty much watched them all on our systems.

“I dropped asleep one afternoon I’d watched that many, and Harry Bunn was one of them. And I have to say, and he is available, I like Harry Bunn. But it’s not him.”

Is there money available? “If it is, we’ll try and get it for the right deal. I’ll let [owner] Marcus [Evans] deal with that. I’ve pointed out what player I would like and hopefully we’ll get him.”

McCarthy says one of his January targets, Preston striker Jordan Hugill, is now out of his price range.

“I think you’ll find he’s way beyond us,” the Blues manager admitted. “I believe Birmingham were looking at him and I’m told have been quoted £6 million, or that’s what they’re looking for him.

“But this is hearsay, I haven’t spoken to [Birmingham manager] Harry [Redknapp] or anybody at Preston. I speak to a lot of agents a lot of people in the game and there are a few interested in him, and I’m not surprised. Good luck to him if he moves.”

Only thing I like about Mick is that you rarely know who his targets are and can spring up a random signing - like Grant Ward! Apart from that, there ain't much else!

Hearing Mick has contacted big Shefki Kugi and asked him to come out of retirement for the season. Happy with that

Lots of ifs, buts and maybes. Usual stuff. Let's hope he pulls a prize rabbit out of the hat.

Give the team a chance. Hopefully a few of the younger players get a break and prove themselves. We know the cash is not going to be splashed. I would hope for some decent football being played while giving our young lads a chance. We may surprise a few. A decent striker required hopefully the next signing. Hopefully a good season ahead.

Bart
Iorfa, Webster, Smith/Chambo, Kenlock
Ward, Huws, Dozzell, Celina
McGoldrick, Garner

If we made no signings, I'd like to see a team like that given playing time!

No worries.
Getting Bunn was always going to be sticky.
Mick's next signing will be a piece of cake.

Thangyou very much. Thangyou...

Am I the only one who found it slightly disturbing when MM answered questions from right behind the camera?

There are a lot of good signs from him that we are looking to play better football this season (talking about not going back to Bru, etc), let's hope it happens. I know we are missing a target man, but to be honest that might help us get used to playing it on the ground a bit more. Wether it's Sears/Garner, Garner/McG or McG/Sears we need to keep it down a bit more. A big target man might send out the wrong message.

Don't get me wrong though, we do need that option/plan B.

The other way we might have to go now is 4-4-1-1 with McG in behind Garner and two of Celina/Sears/Ward/Rowe out wide.

One day before our opening game, here we go again, I want to feel positive but actually I don't, isn't this similar to the situation last season just prior to the opening league game.

Currently living in Belgium so will miss tomorrow. Whilst we're all p $$$ed off with the current regime it's important we get behind the boys. I worry the atmosphere turns toxic early doors!

I think the striker will be the Fulham one that was on loan a burton last season right size for a target man and scored a few goals
