Downes a Doubt for Millwall But Ward Back
Monday, 14th Aug 2017 15:42

Midfielder Flynn Downes is a doubt ahead of tomorrow’s trip to Millwall with the knock he suffered at Barnsley on Saturday, while Grant Ward will return to the squad having missed the last two games having picked up a calf injury in the opening day win against Birmingham.

“He’s having treatment today,” manager Mick McCarthy said of 18-year-old Downes at his pre-match press conference, which was shown live on TWTV.

“He’s a certainly a doubt for the Millwall game. It’s a big old ask for him as well, he’s just come in.

“I’ve just seen him in the physio room and he’s got a nasty bruise on his foot and on his calf. We’ll wait until tomorrow and see how he is.”

McCarthy says no other significant knocks were picked up during the 2-1 victory at Oakwell: “As you can imagine there are a few tired legs and bumps and bruises.

"Freddie’s got a bruise on his foot but I think he’ll be OK, he’s pretty durable. All the others seem to be OK. Grant Ward will be OK for tomorrow.”

The Town boss was delighted to see Luke Hyam play the first 45 minutes of this afternoon’s 3-2 U23s victory over Crewe at Playford Road.

“Isn’t that brilliant? I was delighted,” he said. “I just saw him and said to him that I love to see him the kit, it was great. Just to see him donning that Ipswich Town kit again because he’s had it on once, twice or three times maybe in the last 12 months. So that was lovely.

“And he’s just got through 45 minutes. He’s an extremely athletic, fit guy and he’ll get his fitness quickly. Forty-five minutes was enough for him and it was great to see him playing.

“I would target the Crystal Palace game for him some minutes in that if we could. We’ll see how is tomorrow. That’ll tell us a huge amount. We’ll see how he feels.”

McCarthy says he isn’t expecting Emyr Huws, Tom Adeyemi or Teddy Bishop to be back before the international break, although the Wales international is hoping he can be involved before then.

“Emyr’s making noises about training on Thursday, so that would be good if he is, he feels good, he’s had his treatment on his achilles,” he added.

“Likewise the Crystal Palace game would be a chance if we could get minutes into him. We’ll see. Tom Adeyemi is a bit behind Emyr and Teddy’s nowhere near it.”

Adeyemi, who was at Playford Road with the rest of the squad as they underwent their now familiar cryotherapy session ahead of tomorrow’s game, was hit hard by the illness bug which affected several members of the squad during pre-season, while Bishop has a groin injury.

Central defenders Tommy Smith and Adam Webster are out for eight weeks with hamstring and ankle injuries respectively, while Andre Dozzell will miss the rest of the season having torn his cruciate knee ligament.

It's good to see that Downes isn't as serious as first feared, we really have had the worst luck with injuries so it's good we've been pulling the results out of the hat so far.

I'm pleased for Hyam, but I don't want MM to go back to the bad old days. That said, it seems that MM was Downes is the real deal but if he's out for a week let's see what Ward and Celina can do ! We do need cover for Smith - but if defence is a little weak bring on 4 strikers again !

COYB !

This is another winnable game, before the fixture list looks a lot more tricky from the end of the month. Points on the board a must and confidence continuing to grow. Providing we play from the off (which we didn't against Birmingham and Barnsley), then three points could be the end result. Millwall are poor.

Good solid start to the season.

Millwall should be a nailed on 3 points if we are looking to improve on last season's poor showing. I agree with those saying we need to play from the first whistle I didn't go to Barnsley but the radio commentary and the highlights on Channel 5 suggest Bart was our Man of the Match and it was a good thing Barnsley don't have strikers who were in scoring form.
We should attack attack attack and get them on the back foot.

Hit hard??! I've managed people for years and never known someone off work for two months with a "sickness bug". Something's amiss

Never heard of the Noroviros ? You weren't paying attention to the World Athletics Championship in London, then.

How can it this long for Tom Adeyemi to get over a sickness bug?

A friend of mine picked up a lung infection from a virus - took three months to recover from it, because it saps your energy, and affects your breathing. Doesn't matter how fit you are if you can't breathe properly.

We need to be much better in defence than we were against Barnsley - they could have been 3 up but for the BartMan. We didn't close down or mark up, letting the get in dangerous crosses. Knusden gave some great deliveries but was one (but not the only one) who looked suspect.

Great result in the end & cracking finish from Waggy, but better teams will punish us.

Personally I'm worried hearing Mickma talking about giving Hyam minutes v Palace. This makes it sound like he's not really looking to win the game and progress.

Don't get me wrong, I want Hyma back fit and competing for a place of course.

Palace is the best time to get Hyam and Huws back in action. It's not like either are sh*t and it's not like Palace are League Two, so whatever the team we put out we are underdogs. Agree that 2 months to recover from a sickness bug is a joke for Adeyemi - if it has morphed in to something more serious then surely they would have told us. It would be good to see Celina, Ward and Didz start tomorrow in place of Nydam, Downes and Sears.

I know he wa not well just before the sickness bug, my guess he was not fully recovered before being hit again.
