Brighton Loan Signing Set to Give Goldson Town Move Green Light
Thursday, 31st Aug 2017 09:05

Brighton are closing in on the loan signing of Club Brugge defender Stefano Denswil, a move which is expected to lead to Connor Goldson joining the Blues on a similar basis.

As reported yesterday, the Seagulls were keen to add to their defensive ranks before letting Goldson move out on loan.

Dutchman Denswil, 24, arrived in Sussex last night to undergo a medical with his season-long switch likely to go through in the next few hours.

Town are then expected to confirm the addition of Goldson, also 24, on what’s otherwise expected to be a quiet final day of the transfer window at Portman Road.

The signing of another centre-half has been Blues boss Mick McCarthy’s priority for the last couple of weeks with skipper Luke Chambers, Tommy Smith and Adam Webster all sidelined with injury.

TWTD first reported that Town had made an approach for Goldson a fortnight ago with the 6ft 3in centre-half only having featured for the Seagulls in the Carabao Cup this season.

Goldson, who has also been interesting Sheffield United, returned to action in pre-season having undergone heart surgery in March after a swollen aorta was discovered during routine screening in January.

The centre-half or right-back started his career with Shrewsbury, during which time he spent a spell on loan at Cheltenham, before joining Brighton, to whom he is contracted for three more years, in August 2015 for a fee of £600,000.

Since his move to the Amex he has made 32 starts and three sub appearances, scoring twice, most of those games coming in the 2015/16 campaign as the Seagulls made the Championship play-offs after finishing third. Coincidentally, his first Championship start came in Town's 1-0 win at the Amex in December 2015.

Last season he made only four Championship starts and one sub appearance due to a knee injury and then the discovery of the heart problem which curtailed his campaign.

Town are not thought to be looking to add to any other area of their squad before the window closes at 11pm this evening.

Youngsters Adam McDonnell and George Fowler were allowed to join Aldershot on a month’s loan yesterday but further departures seem unlikely, aside from out-of-favour midfielder Kevin Bru.

The Mauritius international was told in May he could leave if he found himself a new club and recently said he was considering offers from sides in France and elsewhere.

If the 28-year-old isn’t close to completing a move the Blues could settle the remaining year of his contract, allowing the former Levski Sofia man to find another club outside the transfer window.

Now there's a nice succinct headline that doesn't need reading 2 or 3 times to understand...

Aside from that, think this is a good move given our other options presently. Hope it all goes through smoothly.

A mate of mine spotted Mick on a golf course in Portugal this morning... Either proves Mick really doesn't get involved in transfers or we are after the next Ronaldo!

Can't be anything but a positive move....probably for both parties.

However, that is the minimum we need if we have any ambitions this season, with so many players still out, and no guarantee of full seasons from the likes of Webster, Hyam, Emyr, Bishop.....let alone Didzy. Let's all keep our fingers crossed they all get fit, stay fit....and no more serious illness or injuries hit the squad. That's the gamble!

Denswil move lets Goldson switch from former Goldstone club before Blades cut in, no Millwall interest?

Hopefully a good addition to the squad but fear our squad is paper thin and unlikely to form a playoff challenge over the length of the season , hope to be proved wrong .I think a little more outlay could really have pushed us on this year as I don't see a dominant team in the division .
Still personally think we need a ball winning dominating centre midfielder who can control games as against good teams Skuse is non existent

Very happy with this. Was great at Shrewsbury and deserved his move to a better club. If he performs, would be great to tie him down to a permanent contract. Good age and a good quality centre back - which fits Evans' plan!

I would have thought, particularly given the injuries and time out for Webster & Smith, that we might be looking at bringing in 2 centre halves. Webster looks like he has the ability to be a good Premiership level defender, but he has picked up a few injuries since joining & as yet we can't be certain that he'll return for a sustained period of fitness this side of Christmas. I'm sure Mick & the club will have done their due diligence on Goldson, but it's not exactly a grazed knee he's coming back from either.
I have enormous respect for the job both Knudsen & Spence for done filling in at centre half and to be honest I wouldn't have expected either of them to have been as good, even playing alongside experienced centre halves like Chambers or Smith, but we cannot afford to leave their partnership exposed to the leagues top strikers for too long. Perhaps in 6 weeks we will have an abundance of riches at the back, with Goldson commanding & all 3 injured players back fighting fit, but it could go the other way too, hopefully not.

Also, with Huws, Bishop & Dozzell all out, I thought a creative midfielder type might be brought in on loan up until Christmas - no I don't mean Jonny Williams this time. Ward can do the job, but I would prefer him out wide instead of playing one of the strikers there. Skuse and Hyam are holding/defensive midfielders, while Adeyemi and Downes are more box to box. It's not as crucial as the problems at the back, but a loan to January would do no harm.

I'm glad someone else is a tad concerned about the comment "UNDERGONE HEART SURGERY IN MARCH", because to me this raises a few alarm bells on whether he will be able to play at full pelt for 90 minutes.

Still say we need a midfielder who can pass a ball as well has defend i honestly think skuse is the weakest part of our team

Headline makes sense to me! Not an easy one to sum up in a few words.

Be honest don't really know that much about him but Brighton fans apparently rate him...I think they're loaning him out to see if his health issues aren't a factor anymore. A gamble but we'll see...
