Town to Sign Waterford Youngster
Sunday, 8th Oct 2017 11:04

Town are understood to have agreed a deal to sign Waterford youngster Aaron Drinan for a fee of €100,000 (£90,000).

The 19-year-old, who can formally join the Blues when the transfer window opens in January, was on trial at Playford Road along with Waterford team-mate John Martin in August.

Drinan, who has won caps with the Republic of Ireland’s home-based U19s side, joined Waterford from Cork City’s youth set-up in August and subsequently made four starts and one sub appearance, scoring once, as the Munster club carried off the League of Ireland First Division title and won promotion to the Premier Division.

Drinan, who is primarily a central striker but can also operate on either the left or the right, also played youth football with Cobh Ramblers.

Boss Mick McCarthy previously recruited former Blues striker Daryl Murphy from Waterford when Sunderland boss back in 2005, beating Town to the future Ireland international’s signature.

In the summer of 2013 he signed another Waterford youngster Jack Doherty for Town but the winger returned to Ireland the following year without breaking into the senior side. Former Blues Stephen and Noel Hunt also hail from the city in south-east Ireland.

Central striker, that means him, Garner and mcgoldrick could all play up front.

I sincerely hope I'm proved wrong but my guess is that he'll never be heard of again.
Haven't we already got enough up and coming young strikers anyway?

The way McCarthy sees things if he's Irish is going to be great we have heard it before, seeing them coming in to club, they sink without trace I hear Rotherham have got rather a good centre forward but I fear he might cost too much

Can a club ever have 'enough up and coming young strikers'?

In any case, he's 19 with some first-team (Irish) league/international competitive experience already under his belt.

Positive news, promising young striker signed for little outlay, not really much of a risk. Is this as reliable as the Bart story??

Are there any other countries than Ireland producing young players?

That's Aldershot sorted for a striker next season.

Bluehook i dont understand the point of your message. You could say that about the signing of any yoing player. Are you suggesting we never scout or sign young players. I suspect you dont think that so why make the comment. Its literally negative for the sake of being negative.

striker from Waterford ! aaah that will be the replacement for Murphy then, and nobody will be able to say we don't get anyone signed in January either. Two birds with one stone , Mick you cunning old fox . LOL .

The negativity is staggering.

Get behind the lad instead of questioning the signing or where he's come from!

Rotherham have got a good striker who should be at Portman Road

Terry Nutkins and Green Army.I think what Bluehook , Bluetone and a couple of others are alluding to,is the fact that since McCarthy took over 5 years ago we have signed numerous players from the Island of Ireland running into double figures I would guess.

None of whom to my knowledge have got anywhere near to a regular place in the first team, probably because the standard is so much lower than over here;whereas he rarely signs players from the near continent where the standard is as good if not better than in England let alone Ireland.

He has said only this season that he doesn't sign Foreign players as he thinks they have difficulty in settling in,thats his blinkered opinion which personally I don't share. You only have to look at the top two divisions to see what an impact they have made.Presumably he considers the Irish more is because of his heritage.

He may of course unearth another Daryl Murphy or even a George Best in the many years he has left at this club under our unambitous owner;I just hope I am still alive when this happens or we are promoted to the Premiership, both of which seem highly unlikely under the present set up.

Promising signing, but let's not get carried away or put pressure on the lad. He may play a few games, but certainly not likely to be a regular starter initially.

As long as he isn't a winger, he might get the odd game,

I hate Mick's blind signings from the Emerald Isle. Promising in their leagues BUT they're well below the standard we should expect. As for "home sick" continental prospects doesn't wash as other clubs have no trouble.
It's more likely that that Mick can't be bothered recruiting better scouts. Having watched G9 it might be an idea if he focused on talent nearer home.

I'm surprised we've spent £90k on him, the last few punts of the same ilk have been £10k and £12k
Mings and Moore I believe.
And one of those ended up being a £8million sale.
Mick wouldn't spend money if he didn't see or know something.
There must be something about him to spend £90k
I believe if we're still competing come Christmas then Mick will be backed financially.
(Think Mr Evans has realised you need to spend a bit to compete in this league).

Well 90k is a bit more than we usually spend on these ventures. Either prices have gone up or maybe this one has a better chance. Admittedly, not much has come out of our Irish shopping bag in the past, but let's give the lad a chance and welcome him to PR. I do agree, however, we should also be looking more at Holland/Sweden/Belgium/Iceland(!)/Denmark et al. There is plenty of talent abroad if you are able to locate it.

Welcome abroad if goes through, D.Murphy was a good signing from EIRE perhaps you're next...

Milton - won't be anything major in Jan. Jan 2015 was perhaps the time to go to town, however that we did not!

The what that I look at this is that it's low risk (we are punting a fairly small amount of money) with the potential for a high return if he matures into a quality player.
