McGoldrick: One of My Most Important Years
Sunday, 22nd Oct 2017 17:39

Striker David McGoldrick says this is one of his most important seasons with his Town contract up in the summer and with the Republic of Ireland facing Denmark in a World Cup qualification play-off next month.

“This is one of the most important years for me, no doubt about that,” McGoldrick said in an interview in today’s match programme.

“I’m out of contract and there is no option on that either. It’s down to me and the club what happens next year.”

He added: “I have not been offered anything by the club yet but if that changes then obviously I’ve got to look at it. I have a lot of respect for the club and the staff here.

“My family are back in Nottingham, so I have to think about that. I’m 29 now and have probably got one or maybe two contracts ahead of me before I’m in the real world, as they say!

“It’s a short career, football, so I know it’s a big decision for me ahead but, as I said, it’s not something I’m worried about. I will deal with it when I come across it.”

McGoldrick, who hopes to be part of the Ireland squad which takes on the Danes in Noember's two-legged tie for a place in Russia next summer, says it was his decision to return to Town between the recent qualifiers against Moldova and Wales.

“I wasn’t in the matchday squad for the Moldova game and that was going to be the same for Wales,” he continued.

“I had a chat with [manager] Martin O’Neill and asked if I could go back and be with my family and he was fine with that, there were no problems. I have not given up on my Ireland career at all.”

Reflecting on the possibility of playing at next summer’s finals, six-times-capped McGoldrick added: “A lot can happen over a season and if we get to the World Cup what a carrot that is. Ireland have not seen the best of me.”

Why has this not been renewed? One of our key players

TBH I think today proved a point to many. Think it's time to allow these kind of people to move on. They've had their chance. I'd expect a decent striker to get at least 10-15 goals a season. He isn't the only player to let go. We need a manager at the helm to nurture the good crop of youngsters. Unfortunate I think burley has been out of management to long now. With a number of senior players being here for a number of seasons, the question I ask would be what do they actually bring to the table.

The modern footballer in a nutshell. No sign of any concern at the minimal contribution he has made and will ever make. Today was a great example of one of his best inefectual performances, strolling around delivering nothing. By the way, asking Martin O'Neill if it is ok if I go home is not a career enhancing move but a great example of your professionalism. Sadly Didsy you will be just a footnote in the club's history when you might have been so much more.

Just lost to our rivals. Fans really disappointed tonight. Yet never fear, David M is interested in only, erm David M.

Well our strikers including McG are struggling against the 'better' sides in the Championship, McG's lack of pace and his inability in front of goal was all too apparent today. A few years back I would have said he might have been good enough for the Premiership and although he's having a bit of a renaissance this season (being fit) now I'd say he isn't.

If he's replaced it wouldn't bother me if he went at the end of the season.

It's a reprint from the match day programme. Give any regular prejudiced poster something to moan about and they will, whatever the facts. That's why the club and most supporters ignore opinions that are based on their own one sided view of things.

Tough one. When he is class he is class!! But when he is poor he is really poor, as he was today, all be it been chucked on the Left Wing.

If he ends with 15 goals am stays fit, id offer him another deal. If he looks like he isn't going to sign, cash out in January!!

Sorry Didzy but hopeless today from start to finish. Every decision made was wrong which is worse than poor execution of a good decision. Cost is the game.

Woeful yesterday...there are times when I see him running and challenging like a little old woman - his legs do not have the strength...good player on his day but that's not been often enough over 5 seasons.

Think he'll be off next summer..unfortunately not for £8m.

He did seem to have a "hard on" for goal yesterday, despite there being better options to pass.
Unfortunately he does have quite a number of games like that.

I would not be fussed if he went, he is our most skillful player but so inconsistent.

Another good player at this level if you can get the ball to his feet. Should play at the apex of the front 3 in a 4-2-3-1 if we are to get the best out of him. Sadly, likely to leave for nothing in the summer as someone will offer him a better contract than us & take a chance on his injury record.

Hmm he seems to be saying to a midlands club come get me. Postings here seem to be saying close the door after you leave? I guess a lot of comments are influenced by yesterday's poor performance by Didz. Maybe he has not lived up to his potential but I think it will be a sad day if/when he leaves.

How can a someone play for a club for nearly 4 years and not live with his family in the area?

Cakeman added 19:40 - Oct 23
I would like our players to stop thinking so far ahead but instead concentrate on the remaining 34 games.
Mc Goldrick is not alone as a few weeks ago it was Skuse.

Both are reasonable players in The Championship but that is all and I can understand that they have important months ahead with planning for the future but ITFC pays their wages to play and there is a huge lump of this season still to play so please stop being selfish the pair of you and just get on with trying to rescue our season.
We need all hands at the pumps now if we are to avoid playing in front of less than 10,000 supporters in the not too distant future.

Personally hope he stays, but unlikely, as in our team of (not so) hard to beat CLOGGERS & HOOF merchants, McGold shines out like a Belisha beacon!, pleasing on the eye to watch, creates space and adds a touch of flair. Can we really afford to lose a player with those qualities (injuries aside) when we're currently being starved of very little entertainment by our very own ‘MICK the MERCENARY' (DINO)
